| FACILITIES MEETING TONIGHT |
| |
As the first phase of the CH-UH school district's Community Facilities planning process winds up, residents are invited to a Community Listening Session to provide their opinions on school facilities and neighborhood needs.
The session is tonight, May 12, in the Heights High social room at 7 p.m. The School Facilities Committee will make its final report to the Board of Education on July 5, 2011. The Board will then ask the administration to follow up with a detailed study and recommendations concerning the options presented. The findings will be presented to the Board of Education in March 2012. If you have any questions, please email Steve Shergalis, Director of Business Services at s_shergalis@chuh.org. |

Greetings!
Thanks to all who supported and attended our Reaching Musical Heights concert April 11 at Severance Hall. It was excellent. Use the link below to order a DVD of the concert for only $10. Please join us for another great student concert, the finale of our 7th annual Heights Summer Music Camp, Saturday, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Wiley Middle School. Below, you'll also find a link to our Thank-A-Teacher online form. With the school year winding down, it's a great time to express your gratitude to the teachers who are making a positive difference in your family's life. Proceeds go back into our programs that support teachers and students. It's a particularly good time to thank teachers who are retiring at the end of the school year (see Sun Press articles here and here). Stay well. Patrick Mullen Reaching Heights

It's a Great Time to Thank a Teacher! Spring is here and schools across the district are buzzing with children and grown-ups ready to enjoy the sun. It's a great time to thank your favorite teacher. It means a lot when teachers recieve a personalized note of gratitude. We know how wonderful our teachers are, so offering a note of appreciation is easy and goes a long way to encourgae them especially as the year comes to a close. Take a moment, brighten a day and Thank-a-Teacher. The funds you give will help support our School Team Grants program that promotes innovation and collaboration in our schools. Here's the link to our online Thank-A-Teacher form.

Many Villages Celebrates Spring, Prepares for Fall
This year the Many Villages In-School Tutoring Program ran successfully in six of our elementary schools! Spring will be a time of reflection, planning and celebration. Kindergarten was the primary focus, and many parents and community volunteers were directed to classroom teachers who could use the support of a literacy-based initiative. The program was measureable, easy to use, fun to do and geared to help emergent readers on their educational journeys. Volunteers attested to seeing the results and seeing firsthand how their time was making a huge difference.
As the end of the year approaches, it is not too early to prepare for fall. Each of our schools has a need and desire to support Village Volunteers. We need more supportive parents and would welcome the help to rally around our children and bolster their learning in specific and meaningful ways. It does take a village, so come and be a part of ours! Please visit our website or call the office to find out how you can be involved in this life-changing work.
Call 216-932-5110 or email Lisa Hunt, lisa@reachingheights.org, to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Still Time to Donate Books to Students
"Go Public! Great Schools are Everybody's Business," a group of citizens in the Heights, is sponsoring a book and magazine drive for grades K-5 through May 15. "We thought a book and magazine drive would be a perfect vehicle to involve the community in helping our schools," member Joan Spoerl said. Go Public! will work with teachers, reading specialists, PTA, and families at every elementary school to collect and distribute books and magazines to students who will benefit most. Just in time for spring cleaning, gently used books and magazines will be collected in marked boxes placed in CH-UH schools, local coffee houses, grocery stores, and the Cleveland Heights Library on Lee Road. If your business, church, or temple would like to host a collection bin, contact the number below. Here are links to book recommendation lists from the school district: grades K-2, and grades 3-5.
If you don't have gently used books to donate but would still like to participate, you can donate books through a Usborne Books & More online book fair . All proceeds will go to the school district to promote summer reading. Whether buying books for yourself, as gifts, or for the district, all purchases will contribute towards additional free books for the district. For book fair donations to be sent directly to the district, use the following mailing address when ordering: CH-UH City School District, Attn: Kelly Stukus, 2155 Miramar Boulevard, University Heights, OH 44118-3397. If you want to find out other ways you can get involved in Go Public! Great Schools are Everybody's Business, call 371-3753 or e-mail: joanspoerl@sbcglobal.net
