News from Reaching Heights
Sharing our Passion for Excellent Public Education

Greetings!
With a Cleveland winter between here and there, April seems a distant dream. But for students in our district's vocal and instrumental ensembles who will perform as part of Reaching Musical Heights at world-famous Severance Hall on April 11, Spring is right around the corner. Rehearsals are underway for what promises to be an outstanding night of music.

Patrick MullenAs in 2003 and 2007, this community celebration of musical excellence will feature students from Cleveland Heights High School and all of our middle and elementary schools. Tickets are on sale now at ClevelandOrchestra.com.

In the meantime, please join us next Thursday, Dec. 9 at 7 PM in the media center at Boulevard Elementary School (1749 Lee Rd.) for the 21st Reaching Heights Annual Meeting. District Literacy Coordinator Kelly Stukus and members of the Boulevard faculty will make a presentation about the district-wide framework for literacy instruction. Reaching Heights is supporting that framework through Many Villages, our focused tutoring initiative. If you can't make it in person (and I know there are compelling competing events, like the Heights Alumni Foundation Cocktail Party at the Heights Rockefeller Building), catch the presentation on Channel 22 and the Reaching Heights YouTube channel.

Finally, thank you to those who have responded so generously to our Annual Fund mailing. If you haven't, please consider making a contribution to help advance the cause of excellent public education in our community. Click here to give online.

Take care.

Executive Director
Congratulations, Denise Jackson Scholars!

Twenty-eight young instrumentalists will receive financial help that will help them to build their skills as musicians with private lessons. They are our 2010-11 Denise Jackson Music Lesson Scholars. Denise, a talented musician herself, was a parent in the district and member of our board of trustees who passed away in 2009. This is the fifth year for this program, launched in 2006 to remember long-time Heights music teacher Vince Patti, with generous support from his family. We thank them, and the many friends of Denise who made gifts in her memory. This year's recipients will receive a total of more than 500 hours of one-on-one music instruction from professional musicians. This will help stoke their passion for music and better equip them to excel in our schools' music programs.
Grant Spotlight: Nurturing the Next Generation of Voters
"Juniors and seniors from Cleveland Heights High School "elected" Ed FitzGerald Cuyahoga County executive and Julian Rogers to the Cuyahoga County Council District 10 seat in a mock election Oct. 28 at the high school.

Rogers and his District 10 opponent, Matt Brakey, gave the students an opportunity to ask them questions when the two candidates appeared at the school Oct. 27.
The next day, the students had a chance to vote for one of them and for one of two county executive candidates.
FitzGerald, the Democratic candidate for county executive, collected 59 votes to "defeat" Dolan, the Republican candidate, who tallied 34 votes. David Ellison, the Green Party candidate, received one write-in vote."

So begins a Sun Press story about a Reaching Heights-supported mock election held in October at Heights High. The project was organized by the League of Women Voters. This is one of seven School Team Grants and two Community Connection Grants awarded this school year. Read the full Sun Press story here and more about our grants at reachingheights.org.
Thank You, Fairfax Community!
The Fairfax Neighborhood Network was established first to redevelop the former YMCA on Lee Rd. When that building ended us as part of the Heights Library, FNN turned its attention to improving the playground at Fairfax Elementary School. That work complete, the group decided to disband, and contribute its remaining $2,500 to Reaching Heights, noting that we share common goals for improving our community. So thank you Fairfax neighbors, for the good work you did through FNN, and for your vote of confidence that Reaching Heights will carry it on.
