Sept. 21, 2010 | News from Reaching Heights Sharing our Passion for Excellent Public Education |
Greetings!
Two events coming up this school year highlight our work at Reaching Height to support teachers and celebrate students. Proceeds from our 20th Annual Adult Community Spelling Bee (next Feb. 22 at Cleveland Heights High School) fund our School Team Grants, which help fuel innovation and collaboration among educators in the CH-UH schools. The Bee arrives a bit early this year, to make room for another great event, the third edition of Reaching Musical Heights, on Monday, April 11, at magnificent Severance Hall. As in 2003 and 2007, this community celebration of musical excellence will feature instrumental and vocal performances from talented student musicians representing our elementary and middle schools as well as Heights High. While these dates seem a ways off now, they'll be here sooner than you think. As you'll see below, between now and then, there's lots more going on ( Beauty and the Beast, Nov. 4, 5, 6 and 7 at Heights High comes to mind). May you enjoy all the Heights have to offer.

Music Lesson Scholarship Program Honors Denise Jackson
This is the fourth year that Reaching Heights will offer private music lesson scholarships to aspiring instrumental musicians. This program began as a way to honor the memory of legendary Heights music instructor and musician Vince Patti, with the generous support of his family. This year, with gratitude to the Pattis, the program begins a new chapter. Last year, we suffered a great loss with the passing of Denise Jackson, a lover of music, a musician herself, accomplished attorney, and loving wife and mom. To help remember Denise, and in recognition of donations received in her name, we have rededicated our music lesson scholarship program in her honor. Later this fall, we'll accept applications for the Denise Jackson Music Lesson Scholarship program and announce the names of this year's Jackson Scholars.

Looking Back on a Successful Summer
6th Annual Heights Summer Music Camp a Huge Hit 80 young musicians worked hard this summer perfecting their skills at the 6th Annual Heights Summer Music Camp held in late June at Wiley Middle School. They made friends and beautiful music under the direction of Dan Heim, the Director of Instrumental Music at Heights High. "It was amazing to see the commitment and growth from Monday morning's first rehearsal to Saturday's concert," Heim said. Click here to watch the finale concert. Aimed at students entering grades 5-8 with two years experience with their instruments, the camp ignites students' investment in making music by building skills and helping them discover what is possible with consistent effort. A cooperative effort of Reaching Heights and the CH-UH school district, the camp is a key element of our commitment to sustaining the Heights tradition of musical excellence! Our 7th annual camp will take place June 20-25, 2011, at Wiley. 5K ThunderRun Supports Reaching Heights Fifty-nine runners and walkers took part in the second annual Forest Hill 5K ThunderRun at Forest Hill Park on a warm Saturday morning in July. This event, which raised $1,000 for Reaching Heights, grew out of "The Big Give," at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church. Pastor John Lentz gave each church member $50 and challenged them to do some good, be creative, have fun, and use their talents to multiply the $50. Church members Jim Roosa and Jed Koops used the funds to start the ThunderRun in 2009, and have made it an annual event that benefits a local non-profit group each year. Reaching Heights trustees and staff served as volunteer race marshals. Thanks to all participants in this year's event. For a complete list of this year's winners, click here.
