News from Reaching Heights
Sharing our Passion for Excellent Public Education

Greetings!

I've had the pleasure this week of watching rehearsals of the Heights Summer Music Camp Orchestra during camp week at Wiley Middle School. I'm looking Patrick Mullenforward to hearing their finished product this Saturday morning at 10:30,  along with chamber groups the camp Chorus, at the camp's Finale Concert.  Stop by if you love great music. Details below.

For us at Reaching Heights, the school year's end was marked by great sadness, with the death of a lover of great music, Denise Jackson. Denise possessed a humbling range of talents, whether raising two great kids with Stew, knitting, playing the violin, practicing law, installing tile, or serving on the Reaching Heights board. Some of her work and many great photos were on display at an open house that Stew hosted. I will miss her wry smile, which hinted she was thinking a whole lot more than she was saying (not a bad lesson to learn). Gifts to Reaching Heights in her memory will support our music programs.

Enjoy the summer. School opens in 68 days.

Take good care.

Patrick Mullen
Executive Director
Join us this Saturday for some great music!

Come Enjoy the Heights Summer Music Camp Finale Concert

The 6th Annual Heights Summer Music Camp reaches its Patrick Mullencrescendo this Saturday, June 26, at 10:30 am, in the air-conditioned auditorium at Wiley Middle School, 2181 Miramar Blvd. in University Heights. The free concert will feature more than 80 student musicians performing orchestral, chamber, and choral pieces. Come hear how good our already talented students sound after five days of fun and intensive immersion in music. Heights Summer Music Camp is sponsored by Reaching Heights in partnership with the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District. This year, thanks to generous donations from individuals and institutions (including The Mollusca Fund, First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, and ROBO, the Roxboro Orchestra and Band Organization), a record 34 students received scholarships to camp.

Book Group Discussions July 14 and August 19 at Heights Library

How to Walk to School: Blueprint for a Neighborhood  School Renaissance, by Jacqueline Edelberg and Susan Kurland, is the story of how parents at Patrick Mullenone school in Chicago worked with the principal to turn the school around. Co-author Edelberg spoke in Cleveland Heights earlier this month, and as follow-up to her visit, there will be two book group discussions to talk about issues raised in the book and what they could mean in our community. They will take place Wednesday, July 14, and Thursday, August 19, both at 7 pm in the Brody/Nelson Room at the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Main Library, 2345 Lee Rd. For more information, and to learn how to buy the book at a discount from Mac's Backs, a local independent bookseller, contact Joan Spoerl at joanspoerl@sbcglobal.net.
