May 25, 2010 | News from Reaching Heights Sharing our Passion for Excellent Public Education |
Greetings!
One good way to measure a school district is to look at its graduates to see where they end up, what they value, and what they learned in school. The stories of two groups of Heights High alums suggest that Cleveland Heights High School, along with our elementary and middle schools, keep producing outstanding graduates. On May 6, the Cleveland Heights Alumni Foundation inducted its ten newest members, including several with ties to Reaching Heights. Chris Brandt, MD (Class of '76) is a longtime supporter of our work, particularly our music programs, while former Reaching Heights trustee and CH-UH teacher Joyce Collins can now boast that her daughter Lisa (Class of '85) and son Eric (Class of '87) are both Hall of Famers. Read more about all ten inductees at Alumni Foundation's web site.
You can read about seven more recent graduates (now in college) in School News from Reaching Heights, an insert in the May Heights Observer. Read about them here, along with articles detailing some of the teaching and learning going on in our elementary schools, where future hall of fame inductees are learning the skills they'll take into the world someday.
Of course, there are no great students without great teachers. With the school year winding down, it's a great time to Thank-A-Teacher. Your donation supports teacher grants, and your gratitude is shared with the teacher of your choice in writing. We also let the school principal know of the recognition. And you can do it online right here.
Enjoy this great spring weather.

Book Discussion on How a School Was Saved, June 15 at the City Club in the City, June 16 at the Heights Lee Rd. Library
Jacqueline Edelberg, co-author of "How to Walk to School: Blueprint for a Neighborhood School Renaissance," will speak about urban public education on Wednesday, June 15, 5 p.m., at City Club in the City on the Metro Campus of Cuyahoga Community College. There is no charge for this event, but reservations are required. Please call The City Club at 216.621.0082.
Jacqueline Edelberg | How to Walk to School tells how an entrepreneurial principal and visionary neighborhood parents took a leap of faith together and embraced Louis Nettelhorst Elementary School in Chicago, transforming it from an underutilized, struggling neighborhood institution into a successful, vibrant school and a pillar of the community. It tells how Susan Kurland, Nettelhorst's new principal, and Jacqueline Edelberg, a neighborhood mom, brought together a school community to create a stimulating and lasting relationship.
On June 16, at 7 p.m., Edelberg will take part in a Community Meeting at the Cleveland Heights Main Library on Lee Rd. to talk about the book. This event, sponsored by Reaching Heights, the CH-UH Library and the Heights PTA Council, is free and open to the public.
This summer, two discussions about issues raised in the book and what they could mean for our community will take place in the Brody/Nelson Room at the Lee Road Library. If you're interested in learning more about these book discussions, scheduled for Wednesday, July 14 and Thursday, August 19 at 7 p.m., contact Joan Spoerl, joanspoerl@sbcglobal.net.
