Sharing our Passion for Excellent Public Education
Greetings!
Before memories of Thanksgiving fade, I want to thank all who have contributed to our Annual Fund for continuing to make our work possible. Your donation makes you a member of Reaching Heights, a status with admittedly few perks beyond the satisfaction of knowing that you're supporting great teaching and learning in the Heights. You're also invited to participate in the election of our newest Trustees at our 20th Annual Meeting (see details below). And if you'd like to donate, click here.

Enjoy the season.

20th Reaching Heights Annual Meeting Dec. 8
Please join us Tuesday, December 8 at 7 PM in the Cleveland Heights High School Library, 13263 Cedar Rd., for the 20th Reaching Heights Annual Meeting.

We'll recognize some outstanding teachers, hear a powerful presentation from Stacy Stuhldreher and members of her team at Oxford Elementary School on how they are incorporating the Instructional Rounds model to improve instruction, recognize and thank our magnificent Trustees whose terms of service are ending, and introduce the next great members of our Board. All this, plus appetizers!
Congratulations 2009-10 Patti Family Scholars!

27 Students Show a Commitment to Music
Reaching Heights has awarded 27 Patti Family music lesson scholarships worth a total of more than $6,500 to students enrolled in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School district's instrumental music program. The scholarship program increases musical opportunities for students who enjoy music, have financial need, have participated in the school district's instrumental music program for at least one year, and are ready to commit to weekly lessons and daily practice. Lessons are for instruments that students play in their school program. Scholarships pay part of the cost of 20 weekly half-hour music lessons to be given in the first half of 2010.

Student Film Festival Spotlights Veterans' Stories
Everyone Has a Story: The War Experience
On Saturday, December 19, 3 p.m. in the Wiley Professional Development School Auditorium, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District will host a mini film festival featuring short documentaries produced by Heights High students.

Fourteen teams of students produced the digitally recorded video stories about men and women in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Falklands, Grenada, and the first Gulf War.

The stories offer a first person accounting from the military and civilian perspective of war, the sacrifice, service, and relationships formed during times of military action.

The event is dedicated to the service and lives of those honored in the documentaries, especially to Terry Fitten, who died in an October robbery but whose words of wisdom touched everyone who worked on this project.

Each documentary will be about five minutes long and will include a short introduction from the student producers.

The project included students in Karen Bauer-Blazer's American History class, Margaret Hull's AP Literature and Composition class, and Jeff Glass' Video Production class during the 2008-2009 school year.

Grants from Reaching Heights and the Cleveland Heights Alumni Association helped make the project possible.
