| Thanks Gabe! |
Many thanks to Gabe Katz-Napoli, a community-minded young man, for donating five musical instruments to Reaching Heights as part of his Mitzvah project. He collected 2 trumpets, a small violin, a clarinet, and a bell kit and pad from families in his temple and neighborhood. We gave the instruments to the CH-UH school district, which arranged for Academy Music to perform the minor repairs need to bring the instruments to peak condition. Music teachers will lend the instruments to students who want to play an instrument but can't afford one. |
| Summertime and the Music was Breezy |

Reaching Heights held the fourth Annual Reaching Heights Summer Music Camp at Wiley Middle School June 16-21. The camp has established a winning formula and format: school district music teachers leading instruction, working with a team of college music majors and community music teachers, along with Heights High music students serving as junior counselors.
Our summer music camp gives an enriching and affordable summer arts experience. ($130 for 5½ days); develops the cadre of students who will sustain the Heights tradition of musical excellence; expands access to musical enrichment; strengthens the music program and student/teacher connections; and energizes our music staff.

| Patti Family Music Scholarship Concert |
A summer concert A.M. McGregor Home July 26, 2008 featured Patti Family Scholars and professional musicians. Vince Patti was a beloved music educator in the CH-UH district, in whose memory family members, former students and fellow musicians created the Patti Family Music Scholarship Fund. The fund provides private music lessons for students in grades 5-8 - preparing them for the high quality of Heights High bands and orchestras.
A flute quartet of Patti Music Scholars (Ali Manfredi, Kate Hanley, Devin Gamble, and Brittany Rabb) performed "March of the Men of Harlech," a traditional Welsh piece. Private music teacher Leslie Braidech (who has since joined the CH-UH schools as a vocal music teacher at Bellefaire School) and Patti Scholars Tiffany Tomlinson, Charles Bilal, and Kymeron Carter played "Ancient Aires & Dances" by Respighi.
Vince Patti's sons Brian (on clarinet) and Bruce (on second violin) joined fellow professional musicians Judy Berman on first violin, Marcia Ferritto on viola, and Diane Mather on cello in a magnificent performance of Mozart's Quintet in A Major. The afternoon concluded with the classic big band sounds of Dick Wooley and the Cleveland TOPS Swingband. Former Vince Patti student Evie Morris and Reaching Heights staff coordinated the event.
To contribute to the Patti Scholarship fund, send your check to Reaching Heights, (Patti Fund in the memo line), 1991 Lee Road, #106, Cleveland heights, OH 44118. Applications for 2008-09 Patti Scholarships will be available Oct. 1.

| Our District's Vision, Beliefs and Strategy |
By Susie Kaeser, Retired Reaching Heights Executive Director
School reform is alive and well in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District. Over the last six years the schools have been engaged in intensive reflection and research that has led to a powerful transformation in expectations and practices, right under our noses! As a result the schools are on a course that is forward thinking, great for kids, and empowering to educators.
Last spring, district leaders put words to the beliefs directing that change. The words are clear, the goals ambitious, and the expectations for public education, children and educators high and hopeful. Our educators are reclaiming public education as a positive force in the lives of children. Their vision rejects a common public narrative that has given up on public education and the potential for minority and low-income children to thrive. It proclaims a determination to make sure that our schools and children succeed. Read more... |
