2008 Heights Summer Music Camp June 16-21
Summer is a perfect time for busy students to focus
on their interests. That is why in 2005, Reaching
Heights launched the Heights Summer Music Camp
to give students in the CH-UH school district's
instrumental music program a new opportunity to
explore music in a more intensive yet leisurely
environment than occurs during the school year. The
camp helps students perfect their skills and deepen
their commitment to music: two ways to contribute to
the CH-UH school district's great musical tradition.
The 2008 Heights Music Camp will take place June
16-21. More information will be available in the next
few weeks.

Congratulations to Lynne Maragliano
Lynne Maragliano, a kindergarten teacher at
Roxboro
Elementary School, was recognized last month in the
Plain Dealer as part of their Newspapers in Education
program. She was nominated by Lori Neiswander,
who said of Maragliano: "Mrs. Maragliano' magic truly
appeared about three years after Grace graduated
from her class. She asked Grace what she was
learning in third grade. She asked if Grace would
speak to her class about report writing. After her
presentation, Grace came home with a glow on her
face that we hadn't seen before, and will never
forget. 'Mom, I was so proud. Mrs. Maragliano
introduced me by saying, I'd like you to meet my friend
Grace. Grace is a writer.' Grace was obviously
honored to be called her friend and repeated, 'she
said I was a writer.'" Learn more about Newspapers

Why Does Cleveland Heights Need an Income Tax Increase?
Why Does Cleveland Heights Need an
Increase in the
City Income Tax? Come hear what Cleveland Heights
City Council has to say about it at a public discussion
hosted by the Heights Chapter of the
Cuyahoga Area League of Women Voters. Bring
your questions, bring
your friends and neighbors, on
Thursday,
February 21 at 7:15 pm Lee Road Library
Meeting Room B
A member of Cleveland Heights City Council will talk
about how Council came to the decision to increase
the city's income tax for the first time in 29 years.
Council chose to put the increase on the ballot
instead of simply passing an increase themselves.
Council Members have been asking themselves
some hard questions: What actually are
indispensable services? What impact would
more budget cuts have on the city five years from
now? What kind of community do we want to be?
Don't miss this important discussion.

Good news from Kalliope Stage
Paul Gurgol, artistic director of Kalliope
Stage, a non-
profit producer and developer of American musical
theater based on Lee Road, has met its fund-raising
goal of $50,000, the minimum funding required to
continue its planned 2007-2008 season. Kalliope
didn't qualify for the first round of Cleveland's Issue 18
cigarette tax funding and had to replace those funds to
ensure that its artistic goals for 2007-2008 could be
reached. More about Kalliope at www.kalliopesta

Cleveland Climbs in Literacy
Cleveland is the 13th most literate city in the United
States, up five spots from a year earlier, according to a
study conducted by Jack Miller, PhD, president of
Central Connecticut State University. The survey
attempts to capture one critical index of our nation's
social health-the literacy of its major cities
(population of 250,000 and above). This study focuses
on six key indicators of literacy: newspaper
circulation, number of bookstores, library resources,
periodical publishing resources, educational
attainment, and Internet resources.
For sports fans looking for arguing points with
Cleveland's rivals, Pittsburgh (home of the Steelers)
ranked 9th, Baltimore (home of the Ravens) 27th, and
New York (home of that baseball team) 28th.
