In 200 A.D. when Patanjali described the practice of yoga his first four sutras directed us to the heart of the matter.

This is the key sutra.
योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः
I.2. yogaś citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ
Yoga happens when there is stilling (in the sense of continual and vigilant watchfulness) of the movement of thought - without expression or suppression.
