Greetings 7,283 El Sayulero Subscribers,

Revolution Day 2011Much celebrating took place in Sayulita this past week, starting out with the November 20th Revolution Day festivities in the plaza, the beginning of which was the raising of the national flag and playing of the national anthem over loudspeakers, followed by a parade through town, in which local secondary students participated. There was music, dancers, horses, and games throughout the day, including the "Palo Encebado," in which teams of participants climb up a greased pole to reach prizes hanging from the top!  Sayulita's new radio station 88.1 FM was broadcasting live all day from the plaza last Sunday and the celebrations lasted into the night.

The American community celebrated American Thanksgiving yesterday, and at the same time local "Ejitarios", land owners of Ejido property, celebrated their annual dinner and dance where a live band played all afternoon and into the evening.

Sayulita is currently preparing for the upcoming elections for the new Town Delegate. Voting will take place on Sunday, November 27th, at the plaza, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Representing the "Red Party," Cruz Rodrguez Trujillo, of Mini Super Mi Tiendita, is running against the representative of the "Green Party," Hector Pia, of Ferretera Pia, on Calle Revolucin. The Red Party will be hosting a dance in the plaza this evening with tacos, drinks and music. Any local community member with government indentification, "IFE," is encouraged to vote this Sunday for new Town Delegate.

Remember to recycle and take all your recycables to the depot located on Punta de Mita highway.  Keep Sayulita clean and green!  Thank you for reading El Sayulero.

Editor, El Sayulero

Tracie Willis, of ChocoBanana and one of the main founders of Sayulita's recycling program, is spearheading a campaign to keep Sayulita's streets clean, specifically in regard to trash, that tends to get spread around by animals when left on the ground for pick-up. Driving to Mislamoya one day, Tracie spotted an elevated, metal trash receptacle and stopped to take a picture of it on her cell phone.  More

Sayulita's Green Movement

We all know the horrors of Styrofoam for the environment. Its decomposition rate is akin with never, it often ends up polluting the ocean and is toxic when burned. Though I love takeout as much as the next person, I am conscious of the serious, negative impact of Styrofoam, and especially, restaurant to-go containers. I have been known to wash the clamshell containers and bring them to a restaurant if ordering to-go, to bring my own plastic storage containers for restaurant leftovers and much to the chagrin of my husband, have also been known to haul the clamshell containers back to the U.S., where Styrofoam is recyclable in the county where our cabin is.  More

Invest and Enjoy

By Angela Lambert

Farmer's Market Something all homeowners in Sayulita share is a sense of belonging to this unique village on the Mexican coastline. Coming to this vibrant and growing fishing village means you are prepared for "different". You are investing in a property and a new lifestyle, which could seem so "foreign", at first. In the land of the "manana factor", everything changes pace and you come to appreciate the value of the slower life rhythm.

Banderas Bay and Riviera Nayarit to get
Emergency Women's Shelter
By Chris Closser

Mahi Mahi Dinner

Domestic violence and sexual abuse is a huge and underreported problem in Mexico. Currently, there is no safe place in the Banderas Bay area or Riviera Nayarit for Social Services to send these women and their children to get the help they need. Soon, much needed services will be available to local women who are living in abusive situations. A local group called "Vida Reavivida/Compassion for the Family" is building an emergency shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence. The shelter will serve women and children of Banderas Bay and Riviera Nayarit.  More

Mas

GPS: The Fun or Drain of Travel
By Eric Rudd

Mahi Mahi Dinner

My wife and I did a bit of traveling during the summer and fall seasons, some international and some domestic (U.S.). As everyone knows, traveling by air is less fun these days.  From "cattle lines" going through security (and special packing geared for those searches - after all, I still wonder if they'll make me toss out my nail file), to immigration and customs lines, and often, we had to go through all this several times on one trip as we had to make connections at different terminals at airports in several countries on the way to our destination. Leaving early to allow ample time just in case traffic is heavier or lines are longer than anticipated, and then adding up connection time between flights -- all that added up to a lot of waiting just to get somewhere.  More

Mas

Pet of the Week:  "Paysi"

Paysi1Paysi has a bit of a tragic story, as can be common in our small town.Paysi was abused for some time, in numerous ways. After all this abuse, Paysi has maintained an extremely loving personality. He is now on the road to full recovery and his true beauty is shining through.Paysi is a rather old boy, around 6 or 7 years, and truly deserves love and comfort during this part of his life.He is great with kids, adults, and cats, but doesn't much like other dogs for company.  If you can offer Paysi a bit of peace and affection and an otherwise dog-free home, please contact Sayulitanimals immediately.
