Greetings 7,060 El Sayulero Subscribers,

A year ago this week, Sayulita suffered major damage caused by torrential rains and flooding. As clean-up began in town, along the river and the beach, community members came together to help one another, either shoveling mud from their homes or collecting their personal belongings that were muddled in the debris and river water. Twelve months later, Sayulita is back to normal and has not yet experienced rains like last year. The traffic bridge, which had collapsed after the river overflowed, has been completely repaired, widened and improved in its structural design. The beach front bathrooms next to the river are almost finished being repaired and will be open to the public in time for high season. Many of the businesses, such as the taco stands along the river's edge, have simply re-located and are still in business.

What a difference a year makes! This September has been seasonably pleasant with hot, sunny days, occasionally overcast with some rain, usually during the early hours of the morning. The beach is clean and it's business as usual in Sayulita.

Before and After

I hope that everyone is enjoying what's left of the summer season, the warm ocean water and the incredible waves that came in the past week with a giant swell. Read the surf article below and check out our contributor Donna Day's photos of some monster waves and excited surfers.

Thank you once again to our El Sayulero contributors and readers.

=========================================

 Surfing Scared!

By Justin Henderson

Surfing Scared Big Wednesday came to Sayulita on August 31st, followed by Big Thursday on September 1st. I've been surfing here for ten or 12 years now and I have never SURFED SCARED in Sayulita until last week, when the predicted giant southwest swell showed up, and was actually bigger that predicted. I had a lot of obligations and so had no time to surf anywhere but here, right in town, where I paddled out at the town left two days in a row. Like many of the surfers out there, I did a lot of sitting, watching them roll under and by--and I did a lot of paddling for the horizon as yet another, bigger set loomed on the distant horizon, all dark and scary, and we raced just to get over the top of waves that seemed two stories tall.  More

Mas

Pelicans of Sayulita: The Brown Pelican

By Octavia & Daniel

Pelicans In many cultures around the world, birds are seen as messengers from the spirit world, and people often feel that they are identified with a particular kind of bird, and come to understand that this bird has something to teach us. It used to be that I considered the Black Crow as my totem bird, and I felt him always sitting on my left shoulder, constantly judging and mocking me. But since moving to Sayulita and living at the beach, I've come to dismiss the cynical Crow, and I rely now more on the the Pelican, who although he sometimes has a difficult time taking off from the water, still manages to get airborne. The water is a symbol of emotions, which often weigh us down, so the pelican teaches us how to free ourselves of all that would weigh us down, and not become overcome by emotion.   More

Mas
GPS: A Flood Revisited
By Grupo Pro SayulitaSayulita's Flood

One year ago, a "once-in-a-hundred-year-storm" swept through the region, knocked out a major bridge from Puerto Vallarta, wiped out bridges in San Pancho and of course in Sayulita, and inundated 30 Sayulita homes with up to four feet of water and mud. Recovery was quick and slow at the same time. Grupo Pro Sayulita was instantly able to get the word out via our web and email systems, and residents donated $27,000 in a matter of a few weeks.  More

Mas

Giant Surf Watch in Sayulita

By Donna Day

Giant Surf Watch

I heard the surf was really big the other day, so I moseyed down to the beach. All I saw were lots of people watching the surf. Didn't seem that big to me. I walked down to the left of La Terrazola and lo and behold, the waves started coming in HUGE sets. Lots of guys on the beach would whistle out to the surfers to warn them of a huge set outside. A few of the local surfers were out, plus some I'd never seen. One guy (in very outdated swim trunks) kept catching some of the biggest waves I've ever seen here. Then I realized my very own husband was out in the line-up. Sorry to say, I had to leave--much too anxious to watch him take off on one of those monsters. And if you read this week's surf column--and look at the photos-- you'll see what I mean. Yikes!

Guau!
