Greetings 6,740 El Sayulero Subscribers,

cinco de mayoHappy "Cinco-de-Mayo-long-weekend" in Mexico. Although the streets and beaches have been a lot quieter this week, Sayulita is expecting more visitors to town over this holiday weekend as the country celebrates the anniversary of the victory over the French in the battle at Puebla. See the story below about both the 5th of May and 3rd of May holiday celebrations in Mexico.

Although the surf has been down this week, locals and visitors are hoping for a south swell over the weekend.

If you have not made it downtown to the Sayulita Farmer's Market yet this season, now is the time as the final Sayulita "Mercado Del Pueblo" located on Calle Pelicanos along the river towards the beach will be next Friday May 13th. The Sayulita Farmer's market will re-open in November 2011. Be sure to check out all the organic produce and great natural, healthy products available.

Lindsay WalterNew Editor:  It is my extreme pleasure to introduce Lindsay Walter as the new Editor of El Sayulero newsletter and website.  For the past year and a half, Lindsay has been working as an article contributor as well as compiling all the weekly submissions for publishing.  This is no small task and I am honored that Lindsay has accepted the formal position as Editor.  Congratulations Lindsay as we all look forward to reading your El Sayulero intros as well as the stellar job you do for the Sayulita community with every edition published.

El Sayulero Summer Schedule:  Though hard to believe, it's that time of year again. We are already into May and the Sayulita high-season is winding down as we make the transition to low-season, with hotter days ahead and a much more tranquil scene as part-time residents continue to head North. The El Sayulero has begun its bi-weekly summer schedule; expect the next issue to arrive to your inboxes on Friday, May 20th.

Sayulita MagazineSayulita Magazine Update:  This massive undertaking is almost ready to come to fruition.  The 66 page full-color glossy magazine has been delivered to the printers and they have promised us 4,000 copies by next Thursday.  Fingers are crossed that Sayulita residents will be able to pick up copies around town next Friday.

Thank you to all our readers and contributors for another incredible high season in Sayulita. It just keeps getting better here in paradise.

Ian Hodge

Paving Road on Calle Miramar

By Leah Jewall

Preparations for street paving began on calle Miramar this Thursday morning around 10am. A big yellow grader appeared and started levelling and grading the length of Miramar from calle Revolucin to calle Palmar, leaving behind piles of gravel the length of the street, and decimating the small garden plot outside of the bookstore's main gate. By mid-afternoon another grader and a dump truck had joined the busy work force.  More >

Mas >

Mexican Holidays May 3 and May 5

holy cross day

May 3rd is Day of the Holy Cross in Mexico, and is also celebrated as Mason's or Worker's Day. The tradition is to place a cross at a construction site where building is underway. Workers say a prayer or mass at the site; the engineers, architects or managers of the project provide enchiladas, beer or soft drinks, and everyone takes time out to eat and party together.   More >

The Secret Life of Books
"The Kitchen's God Wife"

 By Maria Zache

The Kitchen God's WifeOne of the luxuries of spending part of the year in Sayulita is the opportunity for reading. Though I keep myself busy and involved within the community, I do have more time to read and occasionally steal a lazy morning in bed reading in my pajamas, until the hour makes it seem indecent to do so. Each winter I have read something a little meaty, maybe a book I wouldn't have tackled while in the North because of its length or subject matter. I have reread Kafka and Edgar Allen Poe and read for the first time Gone with the Wind, Lonesome Dove and Dr. ZhivagoMore >

Mas >

GPS: Why Do People Volunteer?
By Grupo Pro SayulitaVolunteer GPS

I'm so appreciative of all the folks who have spent a few hours "way too many hours" helping Grupo Pro Sayulita. Why do we do it? Personally, I must say that it's satisfying to see results - which you tend to feel much more easily in a small town than in a larger city.  But even here, it can be difficult to know that you are making a difference.   For example, efforts to keep streets cleaned last season have been long forgotten by most, but what some of us know is that those efforts allowed for a trial run of a system. Now we are working on finding ways that those efforts can continue on a regular basis. Mas >

  Surf: Cuatro de Mayo
cuatro de mayo

By Justin Henderson

I had bowed out of writing a Surf column this week, due to a couple of things. Not much surf, too many words, and...my wife took a fall a few days ago, wrenched her knee, and has been laid up. So I've been nursing her along, and I have not been on any "surfing safaris" or anywhere else by car except to see a doctor deep in Vallarta. So I'd written off surfing and written off writing about it this week.  More >
 Got A Mop?

By Josh and Shelly

Fitness

When I was using the mop to wipe Tabby's sweat from the floor during today's Power Ropes class, I started thinking that our weekly challenges have been pretty easy on you so far: go for a surf, take a hike, do some yoga, breathe... So as we kick off Physique Transformation Month in Sayulita, and the pools of sweat around Tabby grow bigger, we're turning up the heat on you too. In fact, right now is the perfect time to present everyone with a challenge that goes beyond the norm, and lasts longer than this week.It has 3 parts, lasts at least 30 days, should be adjusted to fit your goal and fitness ability, and requires a mop if done properly.

Mas >

 Yogic Detox

By Narayani

Yogic Detox

Is yoga an effective method of detoxification? It may be, but it may depend on what you want to detoxify. While it makes sense that yoga asana practice could detoxify the physical body, there actually are no scientific studies that prove that. But the main toxin for the yogi is avidya-misperception of the true nature of the self; identification with our body, thoughts and feelings, rather than with the Absolute, Divine Self; thinking that there is a "you" that is separate from others-and the yoga practices can definitely clear that away.  More >

Mas >

Pet of the Week:  "Orejona"
Orejona
This beautiful female puppy is going to be big and would make a perfect guard dog. She is territorial and very vocal, but easy to train.  She is about 4 months old, healthy and spayed. She loves to play and would do well with one other dog, preferably male, or a devoted human.  She can be very strong willed and needs the attention of an owner who is strong but kind.  She is very wary of strangers and will need love and patience.  She is also intelligent and adapts well.  If you would like a loyal and protective pet, she is for you.

For information and/or donations, please come visit the Sayulitanimals' table on Fridays at the Farmer's Market.

To adopt this pet or make a donation, please contact sayulitanimals
