Happy Easter 6,712 El Sayulero Subscribers,

EasterEnjoy coloring your eggs but please do not try to drive into the downtown area of Sayulita this weekend unless absolutely necessary. Semana Santa is definitely upon us and the streets and beaches are packed like I have never seen before. Everyone seems to be having great fun though and a casual stroll through town makes for some great people watching.

Our volunteer contributors have once again delivered a great issue with interesting local stories including the story of the "Big Rock" garden on the way to Playa los Muertos. We also get a review of the local play presented to a show out audience at Los Afortunatos last week as well as pets to save, radio station update, tide pools, GPS, water temps and more. Make sure to read the interview to learn the past, present, and future plans of the Sayulita Organic Farmers' Market.

Happy Easter to all of our readers wherever you are enjoying El Sayulero from today. We hope you are all enjoying great times with your families.

=========================================

Semana Santa in Sayulita

By Lindsay Walter

semana santa

Semana Santa week, a national holiday and celebration in Mexico which precedes Easter weekend began this week with national visitors from big cities arriving to Sayulita to enjoy vacation time by the sea. Sayulita has become a popular destination for travelers from Guadalajara and Mexico city seeking some beach time, surf and even night life right here in Sayulita. Semana Santa, the Holy Week in the Catholic religion is Sayulita's busiest time of year with packed beaches, restaurants, rental units, lots of street traffic and overall downtown bustle in Sayulita. Sayulita Radio Station Update

By Leah Jewall

Radio Station Update

In October of last year, El Sayulero published an article on a proposed radio station in Sayulita. That dream of Jose Mora Cervantes hasn't yet become a reality, but it's getting closer. Donations have been steadily coming in to Jose's business, Rosticera La Pechuga on calle Revolucin, and enough money has been collected to buy a transmitter. More >

It's No Mystery: Deadly Double Bogey
Wins The Day

Deadly Double BogeyDeadly Double Bogey, Sayulita's first Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, which took place at Los Afortunados Restaurant Friday, April 15, was a success on many levels. The event was sold out almost a week prior to the performance, everyone (including the cast) had a few laughs and a good time, and almost $7,000 pesos was raised for Sayulita Primeria.  More >

Sayulita's Tide Pools

 By Octavia & Daniel

Tide PoolsIf you ever want a science-fiction experience, a walk down to Sayulita's local tide pools might hit the mark. On a recent low tide day, accompanied by a group of ocean explorers, we headed down to the rocky shore area between Villa Amor and Casa Los Arcos. Squatting and bending, we hovered over areas of the rocks and were able to find quite an assortment of invertebrates (animals with no backbones) that transported us to an underwater world where small volcanoes covered the planet and spiky creatures roam.  More >

Mas >
The "Big Rock" Community Garden

 By Maria Zache

Rock Garden"Turn left at the next road past the Big Rock." These were part of our directions to our vacation casita on our very first trip to Sayulita. For many years, the "Big Rock" on calle Ninos Heroes (the street on your right on the way from the plaza, just before Rollie's restaurant), has been used as a landmark and a point of reference. The rock has, in the past, also been the site for graffiti and trash.  More >

Mas >

Sayulitanimals: Money Keeps Our Doors Open
But People Keep Our Programs Functioning.

Dolce

After attending the successful and entertaining fashion fundraiser for Sayulitanimals, Mary Brickner and her husband Seth chose to walk home via the jungle road by Los Muertos. It was a quiet afternoon, until they reached a point where all the birds seemed to squawk in chorus. They stopped to look around and noticed a bag on the side of the road with something writhing inside. When they cautiously opened it, they found a beautiful and terrified puppy.  More >

Mas >

Grupo Pro Sayulita works year-round, but the bulk of the volunteer work is done during the winter season.  Our biggest project was our Fiesta-Fundraiser, which raised record funds (a few pesos shy of 400,000 pesos!) despite it coming on the heels of last September's urgent fundraising efforts to help residents/schools/organizations who suffered from the flood, as well as to restore the beach.  More >

The Water Could Be 50 Degrees

By Josh and Shelly

Could be 50 DegreesArriving early to the airport in Puerto Vallarta we decided to relax outside for a while and enjoy the warmth of the sun before it was time to get in line for our flight to Chicago.  We knew all too well that the next 7 days were going to produce little sunshine, strong winds and temperatures that make you curse.  What we weren't ready for was the harsh reality of the whole situation.  More >

Pet of the Week:  Purely Survival
mama

This sweet mama lives on the beach in Punta Negra with her two male pups. Seasonal residents placed food out to help keep her and the pups fed, but Punta Negra becomes a ghost town every summer, and no one will be around to give out the bits of food these dogs need to stay alive.

A concerned resident brought the mama and pups to Sayulitanimals, and they were spayed and neutered, and one pup was adopted.  We are now looking for someone who could foster the mom and her pup until the next high season begins.  At this time, they can return to the beach in Punta Negra.  This is purely a plea of survival.  Last year one of the local dogs died of starvation, and we don't want this to happen to sweet Mama and her baby.  Can you save this life?

For information and/or donations, please come visit the Sayulitanimals' table on Fridays at the Farmer's Market.

To adopt this pet or make a donation, please contact sayulitanimals

Easter

I'm not really religious, but I've always like the idea that this giant cross was watching over Sayulita. I made a little pilgrimage from my house, up and over the hill to photograph it--and had some nice views on the way. I thought it was appropriate for Palm Friday and Easter. Happy Easter!

Felices Pascuas!

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Sayulita?
We're from San Francisco and have been coming to Sayulita for nine years; we bought a house six years ago, and moved here full time three years ago.

What brought you to Sayulita?
We had been travelling to Mexico for 16 years, visiting different places. My husband, Mitch, is a high school teacher, so we would always travel in the summer months. A friend in the States read an article about Sayulita and told us we should check it out, even though she had never been here. So we came to Puerto Vallarta and spent three days in Sayulita.
