Greetings 6,691 El Sayulero Readers,
After our cool winter, the warm spring rays this week feel just amazing. Evenings are pleasantly warm with the occasional cool breeze and the ocean feels just right. Sayulita is preparing for the upcoming week of Semana Santa when our town will be filled with visitors from all over, especially national tourists from large cities such as Guadalajara and Mexico City, all looking to spend time on the beach. The town is certainly bustling this time of year for local businesses and rentals, so enjoy the peace and tranquility and stock up on supplies while you can, before we welcome the numerous guests.
We have a winner! Actually, three. The Sayulita Community Forum Essay Contest has come to a close and the winners have been chosen by our three judges: Justin Henderson, Barry Golson and Patrick Hazburgh. We received many essay submissions, all filled with love for Sayulita and motivating stories, but in the end there could only be three prize winners. Please see the article below for the winners' names and stories. Check out the webpage to read the story and see that the winner actually donates 1/2 of the cash prize to Grupo Sayulita. What a winner, all the way around! This week's El Sayulero interview is with our local ice cream vendor, Zeferino Gallardo Ibarra, who has become quite famous over the internet recently with "a day in the life of" movie/video by Kevin Shepit. See video here.Thank you so much to all of the El Sayulero contributors and readers; this online community grows and grows stronger with each issue. Thank you also to all who submitted an essay for our contest; I have definitely felt all of the Sayulita love in each and every entry.

Sayulita Essay Winner's Submission "Where Should We Go Honey?"
|
The question I had posed to my wife that wasn´t the normal autumnal musing that usually ended with the clarifier, "on vacation." The economy had taken its toll; our once-rewarding careers had fizzled, our pleasant home had become nothing but a burdensome payment, and our rosy futures had developed a grey pallor, much like Seattle's November weather.
We had taken decisive action. We had left the jobs. We had put a renter in our house for a year, we had stuffed all of our worldly belongs into not one, but two storage units, and had pulled the kids from their co-op preschool. We had made the huge decision to undertake a new life adventure, but we had left one little piece missing: where to start.

Sayulita's Desert Brother
|
By Duncan Aldric
There is a place in the high desert well known to many of the inhabitants of Sayulita, that is to say, well known to the Huichol, who inhabited Sayulita in days of old and new, and to a great few of us interlopers as well. To the Huichol (you see them in their colorful dress selling their wares in Sayulita´s plaza everyday) it is a sacred place, a mountain astride the city of Real de Catorce, 3000 meters above sea level overlooking the towns of Estación de Catorce and Wadley and the great desert beyond in the state of San Luis Potosí. Sayulitanimals Fundraiser To Take Place In Portland, Oregon
|
In 2009, on a trip to Sayulita, Mexico, Bryce, an Apparel Graphic Designer at Nike and Gemma, an Animal Cruelty Caseworker in the Cruelty Investigations Department at PETA, saw many homeless animals, often in pairs, running on the beach and streets. Local food vendors and beach goers shared scraps of food with them and for the most part were not starving, but the life of an animal living on the street is difficult. This event will take place on April 23rd from 5-8pm in Portland. More >

Avocado Pie
|
By Maria Zache
You know those recipes that fly around a community as the latest "hot" trend. This past holiday season, Avocado Pie was just that kind of: "Have you tried... it's so easy... ohmygosh, it's so good..." recipe, quickly making the rounds in Sayulita. On New Year's Eve, I ran into friends on the way to a gathering; they were taking the pie as an offering to the midnight buffet. More >
Mas >

GPS: Some New Signs On The Punta De Mita Road
| By Grupo Pro Sayulita
Did you know that Grupo Pro Sayulita rents the depot on the Punta de Mita Road? This is where all the recyclables are gathered, sorted and then sold or distributed to places that will recycle - and not go into a landfill. And there are dumpsters there to put your trash. Without GPS' support, all that trash would just be scattered and piled up in the town. More >
Mas >

Surf: Local Surf Schools
|
By Justin Henderson
For better or worse, in the past decade Sayulita has become one of Mexico's renowned surfing towns. For whatever reasons, though our in-town wave is rarely spectacular, Sayulita has produced national surfing champions and international competitors, and is or has been home to a couple of dozen world class surfers. People come here looking for the surfing vibe, whether it be to watch, to participate, or to learn. More >

Earning Their Brownies - Val & Doug
|
By Josh and Shelly
Teaching class every morning, I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of people -local, visitor and visiting local (those who visit often and/or frequent enough that they feel local).Today I'd like to introduce you to a couple of visiting locals. They are a wonderful addition to town and soon to your belly and waistline. Confused?... Let me explain. Val & Doug came to class like many sweet pale Northerners - with a smile, motivation and a little sunburn. We were soon to learn, they are hardly ordinary. Val & Doug inspire change, openness and discipline. Pet of the Week: Kittens
|
Four adorable gray and white tabby mix kittens were born to a beautiful but feral mama cat. The kittens are about 5-6 weeks old. One kitten will be adopted and we would like to find homes for the other 3 and potentially the mama cat. Two of the kittens are mellower and smaller, and two are a little more feisty. All four have been held and handled and are warming up nicely to human interaction. Easter is just around the corner - skip the bunnies and chicks this year and adopt a kitten instead!
For information and/or donations, please come visit the Sayulitanimals' table on Fridays at the Farmer's Market.
To adopt this pet or make a donation, please contact sayulitanimals

Photo of the Week: Cat Walk in Sayulita
|
Photos by Donna Day
The Cat Walk is the term used to describe the runway that models strut down while wearing designer clothes. While Sayulita may not be one of the fashion capitals of the world, nor does it have a "cat walk," it does have it's share of fashionable women. They all showed up in droves for the 1st Annual Sayulita Animal Clinic Wine Tasting and Fashion Show - the best "cat walked" fashion show ever. The models & clothes were gorgeous, but in the end, the baby models stole the show.
See more photos Ver mas fotos
