Greetings 6,524 El Sayulero Readers,
Our Sayulita beach is full of visitors, residents and surf pros who are all here to either attend or participate in the second annual Punta Sayulita Longboard & SUP Classic. The tournament kicks off tomorrow and the finals will be held on Sunday. Best of luck to all the participants and I hope everyone in town gets a change to check out the great surf enthusiasts and pros participating in the event. Our fingers are crossed and we sure hope Mother Nature sends some waves our way.  As many surfers hope for big waves this weekend, breaking news of a tsunami alert on our shores comes from the U.S consulate and on other news programs after a devastating earthquake took place in Japan. We encourage all of our readers to follow the tsunami updates via their favorite news website. In other news, Riviera Nayarit receives some positive press in Hemisphere in-flight magazine this month after a feature article entitled " Three Perfect Days in Mexico" was published online. The article talks about Sayulita and San Pancho highlighting some local restaurants and bars such as Mangiafuoco and Don Pato's. El torneo inicia ma�ana y los finales se llevaran a cabo el domingo. Suerte a todos los participantes y espero que todos puedan ir a la playa a ver los surfistas participando en el evento. Esperemos que la naturaleza nos traiga buenas olas. Most of us still have not recovered from Wednesday night's smashing and successful Fiesta-Fundraiser for Grupo Pro Sayulita. Wasn't Rollie great - he's always the one to stimulate bidding! And how terrific were the Aztec dancers featuring Linda Mariscal! Don Pedro's did another great job with the food and bar. Even though it's a 6-hour party, after the live auction, about half the crowd stayed and danced for another hour and a half! More >

 The evening of the new moon, last Friday March 4th, I was invited to attend a sweat lodge, or temazcal ceremony in Sayulita. The participants met in the plaza and walked or drove to a location off calle Chiripa just past the primary school, on a treed lot adjacent to an imposing white building. It was mid-afternoon, and there were already people waiting in the sunny warmth of the clearing surrounded by tall trees tucked in the rising backdrop of a hill providing privacy and protection from the wind. Isla Mexcaltitan, Part I

Seeing our small duffle bags, the boat captain asked if we'd like to go straight to the hotel. The only hotel on Isla Mexcaltit�n is on the far side of the tiny island, which appears to be floating in the remote mangrove swamps to the north of San Blas. The bird watching from the boat ride was alone worth the trip. Pelicans white and gray, herons of many species, egrets, ducks, Anhinga and more were prolific; I have never seen so many birds in one place. The waters are plentiful with fish; fishing is the mainstay of the island, which appears to be quite prosperous. The idea of a "planned community" conjures up any number of thoughts and corresponding gut reactions depending on your personal p-o-v. For me, I can't help but think back to my parents' house in the suburb of Federal Way, Washington, with the HOA's strict rules about acceptable "Northwest colors" that qualified as exterior house paint. Refreshingly, not all developments are about conformity to the mundane, as I was reminded while chatting with Fred Geisler and Laurie Keith, the developer couple guiding the vision for TierraLuz, a new eco-community in Sayulita's not-so-remote jungle. Pet of the Week: Hermana
| 
Hermana is a three year old female shepherd mix who has been spayed. She is a sweet, highly intelligent, protective watch dog who likes to lounge but is willing to take long walks on a leash. She has been the queen of her neighborhood since she was born but is now ready for a permanent home. Hermana would prefer to be adopted into a single dog household and would be a great companion to anyone who shows her love.

Yesterday we were leaving PV when we noticed these guys climbing up a really tall pole on the Malecon, so we stopped to watch. They were the Huichol Voladores. They climb up to the top where they've mounted a square frame they sit on and turn in circles while making ropes they've brought up wind around the top of the pole. Ayer estabamos por salir de Puerto Vallarta cuando notamos estos hombres subiendo un poste muy alto en el malecon, asi que paramos para verlos. Eran "Voladores Huicholes".
