Greetings 6,524 El Sayulero Readers,

Welcome to yet another great issue of El Sayulero where our volunteer writers have served up a stellar array of articles, interviews, news and more. We even had a guest contribution of a Sayulita poem.

You may as well call this edition the GPS Fundraiser Issue. Hopefully Sayulero readers are aware that this coming Wednesday, March 09, is the annual Grupo Pro Sayulita Fundraiser at Don Pedro's Brisa Mar Palapa. Last year's event was THE party of the year and I cannot wait to see what all of the fiesta organizers have in store for us this year.

In my opinion, this is one of the most important fundraisers for our village since the group allocates funds to a variety of local causes. I am urging all Sayuleros to attend this event and please bid on both the silent and live auction items. This is a great cause and will be an excellent party. Please bring a pocket full of pesos. I look forward to seeing everyone at the fiesta.

Sayulita Home and Business Owners:  We all know taxes are almost nonexistent here in Sayulita so please consider this event the time to contribute to the social well being of our village. Your donations will directly help to make Sayulita a better place in which to live and vacation. Please bring TWO pockets full of pesos and encourage your neighbors/friends to bid along with you. If you are not in Sayulita for the event, please go the to  donation page of ProSayulita.org and become a member or make a donation. Don't wait, join right now and then read the rest of El Sayulero.

Taxes, after all, are dues that we pay for the privileges of membership in an organized society.  ~Franklin D. Roosevelt

I think we can all agree that as Sayulita grows, organization is paramount.

Thank you for reading, donating, and we hope to see all of you on Wednesday  evening.

Ian Hodge

=========================================

By Grupo Pro SayulitaGPS Fiesta Fundraiser

If you haven't yet purchased your Fiesta tickets, there's still time to get them either online (www.ProSayulita.org) or from one of the many volunteers, or from our "rooster" book table at the plaza and farmer's market.  And while we really want you to buy in advance, it's time to tell you that you can buy tickets at the door.  (Don't worry, if you already have tickets in advance, you can speed through and skip the purchase line!)   More >

Mas >

Although living in an idyllic beach town is a great place to be, sometimes the need to explore more of the bigger world nags at me. On a recent weekend I gave into that temptation, jumped on a plane out of Puerto Vallarta with one of my best girlfriends, and headed to a place completely the opposite of Sayulita, one of the largest cities in the world - Mexico City. Our goal was to drown ourselves in culture, art and all those metropolitan things that I miss after months of only seeing the beach.

Riding the Circuit

Those of us who surf and live in Sayulita are wired into an informal circuit. Everyday, various discussions take place via email, telephone, or at the beach, where we gather, gazing at the morning waves and calculating, speculating, guessing which of the spots will go off. Fleas and Hotspots
The very wet, rainy season followed by a very cold winter has made our pets a flea's paradise! Pet of the Week:  Cono
Cono
Two weeks ago Marcia Alvarez, from the vet clinic Animalove, discovered a small furball hiding under a parked car.  It was scared
and wary, so she took him for security and nourishment in hopes someone would call about a missing pet. After a closer look they
realized his tail had been damaged and had begun to rot.  To ease the pain and stop the infection they removed his tail to a tiny nub. No one ever claimed this sweet, little guy, so they have named him Cono and have begun searching for him a new home.  Cono is only a puppy of about 4 months, and he will not grow much more.  He is a small dog with some sort of Terrier mix.  He is healthy but shy, and when he gets to know you, he is very cuddly.  He needs to go to a stable home where his human really cares about him.

For information and/or donations, please come visit the Sayulitanimals' table on Fridays at the Farmer's Market.

To adopt this pet or make a donation, please contact sayulitanimals

Food in Mexico
Going to the open markets in Mexico can be kind of, I don't know, scary? Watching a side of beef go down the sidewalk on a man's back or being hacked up on a counter is disconcerting. Seeing pigs snouts and feet in a display remind me of slasher movies. Even gaping fish mouths get to me. But in the end, it's a good thing to be reminded of where your food comes from.....if you eat it, that is.

Interview with Barbara Jo Nelson

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Mexico?
I'm from Brookings, Oregon; we left there on Oct. 12, 1994, and came by boat to Puerto Vallarta. We rented a villa with a pool from a young, wealthy Mexican as it was the biggest place to berth our boat, and we ended up staying there for eight years. Our landlord let us use everything, and I used to take the kayak out every day.
