Greetings 6,477 El Sayulero Readers,
The Sayulita Days Carnival has officially arrived to town with rides, music, games, famous cocktail booths and a variety of taco stands. Due to the wet grounds at the baseball field there is a change in location for the fair rides from their usual sports field location to the entrance to town, beside the Salud clinic. There will still be games, food and drink stands set up at the baseball field and around the outer perimeter along the streets for carnival goers to enjoy this season. Check out some of the great photos of the carnival taken by our volunteer contributor photographer Donna Day in her photos of the week column below. I hope everyone in Sayulita during this week gets a chance to take in all the lights, music and festivities going on at the fair and in the plaza. Good news for Mexico (especially Puerto Vallarta) tourism: A recent article in the SanAselmo-FairfaxPatch reminds travellers not to be too scared to head to Mexico, the article titled "Don't Be Too Scared To Head To Mexico" elaborates on safety in Mexico, particularly Puerto Vallarta and the positive experiences one traveller encountered while on vacation. The entire article can be viewed online. On a sadder note, Sayulita is mourning the passing of a great Sayulita architect who built many Sayulita homes. Felipe Villagomez passed away at his daughter's house on February 12th from cancer. Felipe will be missed here in Sayulita and our condolences go out to his friends and family. Thank you for reading El Sayulero.
Sayulita extrañará a Felipe. Nuestras condolencias a sus amigos y familiares. Sayulita Bids Farewell to Felipe Villagomez
|
By Eric Rudd
Architect and builder Felipe Villagomez passed away Saturday morning, February 12, 2011. Practicing professionally in Puerto Vallarta, Felipe also lived here in Sayulita weekdays as he built his first house (Casa Verde) in our village. For about a decade, he designed and built more than 20 custom homes in the Sayulita area. Felipe especially enjoyed taking on impossible lots, sometimes after other builders declined them, and found creative ways to put in solid foundations on steep terrain in order to achieve optimal ocean views. At his peak, he had more than 65 people working for him. He managed to complete his last projects during the economic turndown, before returning to Puerto Vallarta. He was known to be especially gracious and interactive with all his clients. He had a special passion for golf and tennis, but he often commented that he really enjoyed designing and building. |

Geckos in Sayulita - The Friendly Lizard
|
By Octavia & Daniel
A totally natural and expected part of sitting in my living room, is to watch the geckos run around the top of the wall, darting after small insects, creating sheer entertainment for my two young boys. I have come to enjoy having them in my home, almost part of the multitude of household pets that we seem to have these days. I especially enjoy listening to their high-pitched chirping that is such an interesting sound, that many visitors who come to my house still don't believe me when I tell them it is a lizard making the noise. Surf: Trippin' to Chacala
|
By Justin Henderson
This week's story is about a little road trip I took with a couple of surfer pals up Highway 200 to a really great wave near the town of Chacala. This spot has been known in the surfing community for a while-if this wasn't true I'd not be giving directions here. We surfed it on a quiet Wednesday morning, and there were between six and 12 people in the water the whole time, ranging from local kids on shortboards to vacationing California rippers to aging ex-pat gringos on eleven foot tankers. Not a mob scene, but enough bodies to make it obvious that this is a far from secret spot. More >

Chocolate A Brief History and Uncertain Future
|
By Leah Jewall
We all love to indulge in the sweet surrender of chocolate. Ever since the discovery of the cocoa bean by Mesoamericans, chocolate has been appreciated and enjoyed, even exalted and revered. The ancient Huicholes of the Sayulita area considered chocolate to be sacred and used it as offerings in their religious ceremonies. Chocolate is purported to have healing properties for both the mind and body, and continues to be a popular offering of love. However its future is in peril, and your favourite indulgence may soon become a deluxe item reserved for only those special occasions. Grupo Pro Sayulita: The Rooster Book

If I may, since I have a personal interest in the rooster book, I'd like to tell you some of the things I've noticed. For those who don't know, about 6 years ago, I wrote and illustrated "The Day Something Strange Happened in Sayulita." The next season, Egle Schnyder noticed it at my casa, brought it to the attention of Cap Sparling of Grupo Pro Sayulita, he and I advanced the funds for printing, several people helped create a translation and 5,000 copies were printed and shipped to Sayulita for the next season. Sharing Sayulita
|
By Andrea Villarrubia
Last week my dad turned 60 and we had the honor of hosting 20+ friends and family that flew in for a week of fiesta and fun. Being a wedding planner, I see lots of groups coming through town and living it up in general revelry, so being on the reveling side of things was a particular treat and joy, especially because we were all celebrating my amazing father. There is a magic to Sayulita that those of us drawn to live are all well aware of, and letting others in on the secret is a lovely thing, when you get to share it with the right folks. More >

Fitness: Why You MUST Rest

By Josh & Shelly
You surf, swim, run, lift, press, and pull.It sounds sensible that 2 hours of exercise is better than 1. That 7 days of training is better than 6.So you do it, and you're feeling on top of the world. Then one day your shoulder starts to hurt a little.Next it's your knees. Before you know it your elbow joints are on fire with tendinitis, you have a partial tear in one of your rotator cuff muscles, and early signs of sciatica are starting to feel like a knife is jabbing you in the lower back.Welcome to overtraining. Pet of the Week: Adorable Cats
|
A few weeks ago, a caring person found four tiny kittens all alone next to a river bed. They were only a few days old and barely had their eyes open. The woman took them home and bottle fed them every four hours over the next few weeks. With her loving care all four kittens survived and have become beautiful, healthy cats. Sayulitanimals spayed/neutered them and now they are ready for a caring home. They are tame, loving and very beautiful! For information and/or donations, please come visit the Sayulitanimals' table on Fridays at the Farmer's Market.

Photo of the Week: Sayulita Days Carnival is Here!
|
The other day I was riding my bike to the gym and saw all these trucks pulling folded up carnival rides. It always seemed like these carnivals just pop up, and really, they do--literally. It's just a few guys that haul these rides around, set them up and run them, one little trailer with a generator and some scary little boxes with scraps of wire hanging out that control everything. But still--once it's up and running , it's exciting when the lights go on and the loud music and rides start up. Don't miss it ! One thing I would recommend missing, though, is the special Sayulita Days Cocktail-it's deadly, truly...this I unfortunately know from experience. See more photos Ver mas fotos
