Greetings 6,049 El Sayulero Readers,
Welcome to the first 2010-2011 weekly edition of El Sayulero. Combined with the opening of Rollie's (see below), our de facto "unofficial" timekeeper has announced "The Season" has officially started! Welcome traveler, tourist, local, and visitor alike to yet another fantastic year of perfect weather, perfect sun, perfect people and a perfect "onda" in a small Mexican village where "perfection" is definitely a very subjective term though most of us will have to agree living in Sayulita is living in paradise. (with a bit of flooding once in a while thrown in for good measure.)My Sayulita sentiments are obvious and though I am not actually in Sayulita right now, typing this intro puts me there in spirit. I trust it does the same for at least a few of our readers who are also away. Speaking of being away, I guess Kerry and I need to let you all know why you have not seen us around the cobblestone streets of Sayulita. A community newsletter is not really the forum for a publisher's personal details but so many of you have inquired as to our whereabouts that we feel an explanation is in order.This intro comes to all of you from Kazakhstan (former USSR block in central Asia) where we will be living for at least the next five weeks while we bond with and begin the court proceedings to adopt a baby from an orphanage. The process is long and tedious (13 months and still going) but if everything goes as planned we will return to Sayulita in January with a new Hodge family member. The legal process is quite lengthy here in Kazakhstan so you may actually see one (or both) of us in Sayulita before it is complete. Enjoy Sayulita's warmth everyone; it will be a good day if the thermometer gets above freezing here today!

Bienvenidos a la primera edición semanal de El Sayulero para la temporada 2010-2011. En combinación con la apertura de Rollies (ver abajo), nuestro cronometrista no oficial ha anunciado que la temporada ya ha comenzado oficialmente. Bienvenidos a los turistas, viajeros, locales y visitantes a otro año fantástico con clima perfecto, el sol perfecto, gente perfecta y una onda perfecta en un pequeño pueblo mexicano donde la palabra "perfecto" es algo muy subjetivo pero muchos de nosotros estamos de acuerdo que vivir en Sayulita es vivir en paraíso. (Con algunas inundaciones.) Mis sentimientos por Sayulita son obvios y aunque no estoy en Sayulita ahorita, siento como si estuviera ahí en espíritu mientras escribo esto. Estoy seguro que otros lectores que no están en Sayulita ahorita se sienten igual. Hablando de no estar en Sayulita, supongo que Kerry y yo tenemos que dejar que todos sepan la razón porque no nos han visto en las calles empedradas de Sayulita. Un boletín normalmente no es lugar para los detalles personales del editor pero muchos de ustedes han estado preguntando donde estamos y nos sentimos que les debemos una explicación. Escribo desde Kazajstán (la antigua Unión Soviética en Asia) donde vamos a estar viviendo durante las próximas 5 semanas mientras establecemos un vinculo con un bebe adoptivo y comenzamos los tramites legales para adoptar un hijo de un huérfano. El proceso es largo y tedioso pero si todo va bien vamos a regresar a Sayulita en enero con otro miembro de la familia Hodge. El proceso legal es muy largo aquí en Kazajstán entonces es posible que ven a uno de nosotros (o los dos) en Sayulita antes que se termine todo. Time and Time Zone Changes (Don't Forget)

 Reminder that Sayulita set back the clocks one hour last Sunday at 12 AM. Visitors traveling to Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita remember that we are now on the same time zone as Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco as of last spring when the municipality changed the time zone in Banderas Bay.
Recordatorio que Sayulita regreso los relojes una hora el domingo pasado a las 12 AM. Visitantes viajando a Puerto Vallarta y Sayulita recuerden que ahora estamos en el mismo huso horario que Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco a partir de primavera pasada cuando el ayuntamiento cambio el huso horario en la Bahi de Banderas.

High Season in Sayulita Has Begun

Community Effort to Clean Up Cemetery
Before Day of the Dead

In efforts to get ready for the occasion where typically family and friends take flowers, light candles, set out food for their deceased loved ones at their grave sites, Sayulita workers helped clean up the cemetery by removing overgrown plants, debris and garbage. A generous donation of paint and labour was donated by an American couple who own Casa Myretta here in Sayulita in order to repaint the arch way entering the cemetery from the road near Villa Amor hotel. En preparación para el evento en que normalmente las familias y los amigos de los fallecidos llevan flores, velas, y comida a los ataúdes, los trabajadores de Sayulita trabajaron para limpiar plantas crecidas, escombros, y basura.  Many of you regular visitors are getting ready to return to Sayulita for the winter season and are no doubt wondering what you could bring down with you to contribute to the flood relief fund. There is a surplus of many items, such as adult clothing, furniture and medicines. All misplaced families have returned to their renovated homes, or have been provided with new lodging, and any additional items they may need will be provided for them by individual request. The daycare and kindergarten were hit hard by the flood and they are still in need of some donations. More >

 The rainy season is behind us and the Nayarit growing season is just arriving. The Mercado del Pueblo, Sayulita's Farmer's Market, celebrates the seasons and wonders of our region by featuring local farmers and families who produce high quality, natural consumable products. This year, El Mercado will open on November 12th at the Casa de Cultura (downtown Sayulita, Ave. Palmar) and be open every Friday through May from 10am - 2pm. More >

Nature: Chacalacas in Sayulita

At home this summer with my youngest son, an extraordinary sound came from our backyard. Naturally we immediately ran outside to find the source. No need to meticulously search out where this bird call was coming from, as the branches on one of our trees were bouncing up and down, shaking and rustling, completely obvious as to where this animal was. It gave another one of its raucous calls, and with that, my little 2-year-old turned around and ran with a look of fear on his face. Laughing, I tried to coax him back, to take a look at one of the oldest birds in this area, appearing as a wild turkey, and known as the Chachalaca. More >
En casa este verano con mi hijo menor, un sonido extraordinario vino de nuestro patio trasero. Naturalmente, de inmediato salimos corriendo para encontrar la fuente. No hay necesidad de buscar meticulosamente en la presente convocatoria de aves venía, como las ramas de uno de nuestros árboles fueron rebotando hacia arriba y hacia abajo, moviendo y el robo, completamente obvio donde estaba este animal. Sayulitanimals Back with a Bang

Sayulita is beginning to swell with the life of the high season! Tried-and-trues are re-opening and new hopefuls are testing the waters. Sayulitanimals is no different. We have started the 2011 season with a bang! Our doors opened with our fifth Spay and Neuter Clinic made possible by Dr. Charlotte Burns and Bliss Fisher, who came from California once again to volunteer their time and skills. Adding to the mix our incredible group of volunteers and supporters, in just three days, 22 female dogs and 8 female cats were spayed, 19 male dogs and 11 male cats were neutered, a rotting tail was amputated, a necessary euthanasia was given, and a duck's legs were straightend out after a birth defect. Sayulita está empezando con la vida de la temporada alta! Negocios y locales se vuelven a abrir y nuevos aspirantes están probando las aguas. Sayulitanimals no es diferente. Hemos comenzado la temporada 2010 - 2011 con una explosión! Nuestras puertas se abrieron con nuestra quinta Clinica de Esterilización y Castración hecha posible gracias a la Dra. Charlotte Burns y Fisher Bliss, quienes vinieron desde California, una vez más a ofrecer voluntariamente su tiempo y habilidades. About three years ago, Grupo Pro Sayulita volunteer Janice Rothrock had a mime performer visiting her in Sayulita. Generous with her energy and with just a few days notice, she arranged for a performance at the Primaria school. All the kids gathered around the courtyard as the mime entertained the kids. They were so excited, many asked for autographs-some on their arms and shirts.

Vallarta nightlife, a phrase that conjures up images of foam parties, sky lounges, and... dance theater? Having an aversion towards driving on highway 200 at night, my impressions of Puerto Vallarta are skewed toward the daytime, and my days there are mostly filled with running errands, shopping, and (lately) Ameca bridge traffic. So I was stoked when my girlfriends invited me for a Saturday night in the city to check out Teatro Vallarta's "Fandango: A Muscial Journey of Contemporary Mexico." Fellow Sayulita-mama Megan Pepin is a dancer in the production and we went to cheer her on as she twirled and tapped across the stage. More >

Al tener una aversión manejar por la carretera 200 por la noche, mis impresiones de Puerto Vallarta son del día, los que son en su mayoría, llenos de hacer recados e ir de compras, y - últimamente - el tráfico del puente Ameca. The Day of the Dead
Brings the Waves Back to Life

Tuesday November 2, the Day of the Dead here in Mexico, and the day of the mid-term elections up in the USA (I dread what changes those elections may bring), brought some great news to Sayulita. It was news that arrived in the form of super fun, medium-small waves breaking on both sides of the point - both rights and lefts peeling in the bright, welcoming sunshine, with a crowd of hackers and local rippers scrambling for position on the right, and a smaller crowd on the left. After too many weeks of bad waves and/or dirty water, and all the rest of the dreck we've been dealing with--and in the face of surf forecasts that had called for nothing doing until next weekend when the first north swell of the season was supposed to hit--the sight and sound of surf here in town was cause for celebration. Martes, el dos de noviembre, Día de los Muertos en México, y el día de las elecciones de mitad de período en los EE.UU. (me da miedo de los cambios que esas elecciones puedan traer), trajo buenas noticias a Sayulita; noticias que llegaron en forma super divertida, olas de tamaño mediano-pequeño rompiéndose en ambos lados del punto, tantas derechas e izquierdas en el sol brillante y acogedor, con un grupo de principiantes y desgarradores locales luchando por la posición de la derecha, y un grupo más pequeño en la izquierda. Después de muchas semanas de muy malas ondas y/o agua sucia, y todo el resto del mugre que hemos aguantado - y considerando los pronósticos del surf que declaron que no habría nada hasta el próximo fin de semana cuando el primero oleaje del norte de la temporada iba a golpear - la vista y el sonido del surf aquí en el pueblo fue motivo de celebrar. Dia De Los Muertos

I took my young photo students to the Sayulita Cemetery for a photo excursion the day after the Day of the Dead. Most of them had been before, but I don't think any of us had seen the cemetery so clean and dressed up before; it was beautiful. Concrete graves had been painted, all of the plant overgrowth removed, beautiful flowers and wreaths were everywhere. Some of the graves reminded me of floats in the Rose Parade, they were so decked out. The sun was shining and streaming through the trees making beautiful light. Even so, at times it felt a little eerie. Must have been all the spirits. See more photos >
Un día después del Día de los Muertos, llevé a los jóvenes de la clase de fotografía hasta el cementerio de Sayulita para una excursión de fotos. La mayoría de ellos lo había visto antes, pero creo que ninguno había visto el cementerio tan limpio y decorado - era hermoso. Las tumbas de hormigón habían sido pintadas con todo el crecimiento excesivo de plantas eliminado y hermosas flores y coronas de flores por todas partes. Algunas de las tumbas me recordaron de las carrozas en el Desfile de las Rosas, tan elegante fueron. El sol brillaba intensamente a través de las hojas de los árboles haciendo una luz hermosa. Pet of the Week
"Jonky"

 Jonky lives on Av. Revolucion near Rollie's and is a tragic example of being an "owned" street dog. Sayulitanimals had been observing him and noticed that his testicles had become grossly swollen. He was brought in to Dr. Charlotte Burns, who was here for our spay and neuter campaign, so she could examine and neuter him. He was very thin, and his coat had matted and grew in locks. When he was in recovery, our volunteers trimmed his fur and discovered many sores and attack marks. He is now a patient in our Medical Aid program where he gets care, good food and needed medicine. We need your financial support to continue with this program of helping street animals in need.  Jonky vive en avenida revolución cerca de Rollie's y es un ejemplo trágico de ser un perro callejero con "dueño". Sayulitanimals lo estaba observando y notaron que sus testículos estaban severamente hinchados. Lo llevaron a la clínica y Dra. Charlotte Burns quien estaba aquí durante la clínica de esterilización lo examinó y lo esterilizó. Estaba muy flaco y su pelo estaba enredado. Durante su recuperación, nuestros voluntarios le cortaron el pelo y notaron que tenía heridas de ataques. Ahora es paciente en el programa de asistencia médica donde recibe cuidado, comida y medicina. Where are you from and when was your first time in Sayulita? I am from Tepic, Nayarit. I first came to Sayulita on December 31st, 2008. I came to spend New Years with my father who lives and works here in Sayulita. I then came back to Sayulita in April of that year to spend a few months with my father; I ended up getting a job at the Ejido office in November, 2009.
¿De donde eres y cuando fue tu primera vez aquí en Sayulita? Soy de Tepic, Nayarit. La primera vez que vine a Sayulita fue el día 31 de diciembre, 2008 para pasar ano nuevo aquí con mi papa quien vive y trabaja aquí en Sayulita. Luego regrese a Sayulita en abril para pasar unos meses con mi papa y me salio el trabajo que tengo en el comisiariado.
