Greetings 5,857 El Sayulero Readers,
The midweek rains gave local Sayulita residents another scare this week but fortunately river levels did not rise to anything close to the previous flooding and we can breathe a sigh of relief as cleaning and community support efforts continue to help reverse the effects of this summer's downpours. On behalf of El Sayulero and all of our readers I am extending a huge heartfelt GRACIAS Y ABRAZO to all of the individuals, homeowners, organizations, and local businesses who have committed an invaluable amount of time and donations to the flood-relief effort. Much of the giving was done anonymously and to list all of the Sayulita "heroes" who relentlessly work to clean-up the village would take up the majority of the newsletter. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to everyone. Though just a tad political I feel an outsider's statement posted to our forum really can help reveal the true sense of community and togetherness Sayulita has demonstrated over the last couple of weeks. http://sayulita-mexico.com/index.php?showtopic=11338 This week's issue brings a variety of good news and cheer. Sayulita may finally be getting a gas station, though this rumor has been around for almost 10 years now. Construction is already underway on a new pedestrian bridge and auto bridge connecting the north and south sections of Sayulita and should be completed before the tourist season. Ojala! Plus, our local resident writers share a variety of stories about their personal views regarding leaving and returning to Sayulita. The Sayulita beach needs your help this Saturday. Please try to make the time to head down to the Punta Sayulita beach club on Saturday (tomorrow) morning at 9:30 AM and participate in the cleanup. Thanks for reading,

Saludos a los 5,857 lectores de El Sayulero,
Las lluvias que cayeron durante media semana dieron un susto a los residentes de Sayulita pero afortunadamente los niveles de los ríos no aumentaron niveles peligrosos como durante la inundación y podemos respirar con alivio mientras siguen los esfuerzos comunitarios y la limpieza del pueblo después de las lluvias fuertes que hemos tenido este verano. Por parte de El Sayulero y todos los lectores agradezco mucho y mando un abrazo a todos los individuales, propietarios, organizaciones y negocios locales que han dedicado un montón de tiempo y donado al auxilio de la inundación. Muchas donaciones eran hechas de personas anónimos y hacer una lista de héroes en Sayulita que han ayudado a limpiar el pueblo ocuparía casi todo el boletín de El Sayulero. Gracias. Gracias. Two New Bridges For Sayulita

On Monday, Sept. 6, the continuing torrential rains collapsed the traffic bridge in Sayulita sometime during the night. The southwest corner has dropped to the riverbed, and the north and south sides of the concrete are separated from the road surface by several inches. The east bridge walkway is still passable for pedestrians only, by the use of a wooden plank on the north side. The surrounding banks are littered with debris, and remnants of the bodega that once served the taco stand on the southeast corner. At Yo Yo Mo's, the far section of the patio is coming off its foundation and tilting toward the river. More >
Lunes, el 6 de septiembre, las continuas lluvias torrenciales colapsó el puente de tráfico en Sayulita en algún momento durante la noche. La esquina suroeste se ha reducido al lecho del río, y los lados norte y sur del hormigón se separaron de la superficie de la carretera por varias pulgadas. Plans For Pemex Gas Station Outside Sayulita

Work has begun at the corner of Highway 200 and the Punta de Mita highway entering Sayulita. Plans for a Pemex gas station and a full auto service center are underway and expected to be completed by next year. Aside from the much needed gas station, Pemex's plans include a service center, an Oxxo convenience store and perhaps even a couple of fast food to-go restaurants. Pemex also plans to improve the neighboring tire shop's facilities. The engineer at the construction site (who prefers to remain anonymous) confirmed that a Pemex gas station will be installed but the location will first need to pass four separate safety tests by Pemex in order to open the gas station at that location. El trabajo ha comenzado en el crucero de la carretera 200 y la carretera Punta de Mita entrando a Sayulita, ya que hay planes para construir una gasolinera Pemex y un centro de servicos en esta ubicación. Aparte de la gasolinera que hace tanta falta en Sayulita, habrá también una tienda de Oxo y posiblemente unos restaurantes de comida rápida. Pemex también tiene planeado mejorar las instalaciones de la llantera al lado. Sunday, Sept. 19 9:00pm. Friends from San Ignacio had stopped by for tea. Fifteen minutes later the torrential downpour started, and two hours later I'm writing this with my bare feet in a puddle of water, listening to the sounds of drumming and chanting from across the street. My friends left hurriedly, as I did my best to sop up the water coming in through the windows and trickling steadily down the walls. When the downpour had subsided to a steady rain an hour and a half later, I heard activity and singing in the street; those who had been forced to seek shelter in the torrent were now making their way home. Local Sayulita Surfers Featured in Maxim

In this month's September Maxim Magazine in Spanish, an article titled "The Endless Summer," all about surfing style and fashion, was published featuring local Sayulita surfers Jimena Ochoa, Adán Hernandez, and Travis Southworth. These local talents have traveled to Mazatlán and Puerto Escondido to compete in the Mexican circuit national competitions. It was also evening, and our taxi couldn't find our place.The plaza streets were dug up for new street pipes, leaving it as one big mud hole. Nevertheless, I could imagine Sayulita with sun. No Place Like Home

This summer, for the first time since we moved to Sayulita, we left. Not for the whole season, but for a solid 4 weeks - a substantial break from home and work life. We spent time with family and friends -- disconnecting from our computers, jobs, and daily responsibilities while reconnecting as a family unit. After a week in the mountains without internet, we returned to civilization and were shocked to learn of the devastation happening in Sayulita. Feeling helpless from so far away, we were intensely moved by the mobilization of our community that came together to help those in need, provide mattresses and devote days cleaning out mud-filled homes. Este verano, por primera vez desde que nos mudamos a Sayulita, nos salimos. No para toda la temporada, sino para un bloque de cuatro semanas - un descanso de nuestra casa y la vida laboral. Pasamos tiempo con la familia y amigos - desconectando de nuestros ordenadores, trabajos y responsabilidades diarias al volver a conectar con el núcleo familiar. Después de una semana en las montañas sin internet, regresamos a la civilización y nos sorprendimos al enterarnos de la devastación sucediendo en Sayulita. Sintiéndonos impotentes desde tan lejos, nos conmovió profundamente por la movilización de nuestra comunidad que se unió para ayudar a los necesitados, proporcionando colchones y dedicándose a días de limpiar casas llenas de barro.

Compass Shift

It is the time of gathering and preparation. For numerous species, their internal compass has shifted south and preparations are underway for the annual migration to winter homes. This past weekend my husband and I visited the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is a major "jumping off" point for many migrating bird species as well as the Monarch butterfly. The Monarchs are now gathering in a small peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan anticipating their long journey to Mexico where they will spend the winter hibernating. More >

El Sofa Cafe Drop Off Center For Flood Victims

This is Amaranta J. Torre Alcala, the lovely owner of the El Sofa Cafe in Old towne Puerto Vallarta, who has made her Cafe a drop-off center for flood victims of Sayulita. Meagen Svendsen and I just happened to be walking by and stopped for a coffee (before we even noticed the sign) and mentioned we lived in Sayulita and she showed us a HUGE pile of bags full of clothes, bedding, food, diapers, water, etc., that she has been collecting for Sayulerans. How cool is that? We brought it back with us and gave it to CVIS to distribute. Thanks Amaranta! More photos >

Alcalá Torre, la dueña de la hermosa café, El Sofá, del Pueblo Antiguoo en Puerto Vallarta, que ha ofrecido su lugar como un centro de coleccionar para los víctimas de las inundaciones de Sayulita. Meagen Svendsen y yo caminábamos y nos detuvimos para tomar café (antes de percatar el letrero), y mencionamos que vivimos en Sayulita. Ella nos mostró un montón de bolsas llenas de ropa, ropa de cama, alimentos, pañales, agua, etc, que había recogido para los sayuleros. ¿No es genial? Llevamos todo con nosotros y lo dejamos en CVIS de distribuir. ¡Gracias a Amaranta!

When did you first come to Sayulita? I came to live in Sayulita with my family 30 years ago. My parents decided to come to Sayulita because my father had tuberculosis and the doctors told him that living by the ocean in a seaside town would help his illness.
