Greetings 5,612 El Sayulero Readers,
 Here we are in mid August and I hope residents and visitors in Sayulita are finding ways to keep cool during these hot summer days we have been experiencing and taking cover during the night's heavy rains and tropical storms. The temperatures have significantly risen over the last couple of weeks and the town is slowing down during the mid day heat waves. However last night the plaza was full of activity with musicians playing African music while locals and visitors strolled about enjoying an ice cream or a cool beverage. This week's El Sayulero newsletter comes with some very sad news of a community resident who passed away last week. Sergio Ibáñez, a good friend to so many in Sayulita and a professional chef with a private catering business here in town passed away suddenly of a heart attack in the early hours of the morning on August 1st. Aqui estamos a medios del mes de agosto y espero que todos los residentes y visitantes encuentren maneras para refrescarse durante estos dias calurosos de verano que hemos tenido y espero que las lluvias fuertes y tormentas tropicales no le afecte a nadie. Las temperaturas han subido mucho en estas ultimas semanas y las calles se ecuentran tranquilas durantes el medio dia cuando el sol esta mas fuerte. Sin embargo, anoche habia mucha actividad en la plaza con musicos tocando musica africana mientras locales y visitantes caminaban por la plaza disfrutando de un nieve o una bebida refrescante.
El Sayulero de esta semana trae malas noticias con la perdida de un residente en la comunidad. Sergio Ibáñez, un buen amigo de mucha gente aqui en Sayulita se fallecio de un paro cardiaco en la madrugada del dia 1 de agosto. Sayulita extranara a Sergio. Nuestras condolencias para su familia.

Sayulita Remembers Sergio Ibáñez
| Sayulita
lost a member of our community last week. Sergio Ibáñez, a private
chef here in Sayulita passed away Sunday August 1st in the early hours
of the morning due to a sudden heart attack during a stay in
Guadalajara. Sergio lived here in Sayulita and would travel between
Sayulita and Guadalajara. He loved living in a coastal town, spending
time with his friends and family and was an excellent chef with a
personal catering business very popular with locals and tourists alike.
Sergio found great friendships and work opportunity here in Sayulita.
Sergio leaves behind his wife Josefina and young daughter Ana Teresa.
Sergio will be truly missed here in Sayulita by all that new him
personally as well as those who had the great fortune to taste his
culinary creations.

un gran miembro de la comunidad la semana pasada. Sergio Ibáñez, un chef
privado aquí en Sayulita falleció durante un viaje a Guadalajara en la
madrugada el domingo 1 de agosto de un paro cardiaco. Sergio vivió aquí en Sayulita
y seguido viajaba a Guadalajara. A Sergio le encantó vivir en un pueblo costal,
pasar tiempo con su familia y sus amigos y era un excelente chef con su propio negocio de catering que fue muy exitoso entre los locales y turistas. Sergio
encontró buenas amistades aquí en Sayulita y oportunidades laborales. Sergio
deja su esposa Josefina y su hija Ana Teresa. Sayulita extrañará mucho a

Corrections to Calle Coral

Calle Coral is not being completely reconstructed or cobblestoned from
Revolución to Palmar, nor will it be changed into a major thoroughfare. Calle Coral is considered a secondary road in Sayulita, and is
therefore not eligible for government funding. Consequently, any road
improvements need to be funded by the street's residents. However, not
all of the property owners on calle Coral have chosen to participate in
the paving project, resulting in the road being only partially paved,
leaving the remainder as a dirt road.

Sayulita's New Sport For Youths: Boxing

Boxing has kicked off in Sayulita with an amatuer Boxing team which
formed back in April and now the group consists of nine boys and girls
between the ages of 10 and 19. The boxing team has now held their
second boxing match of the year here in Sayulita. The first boxing
match took place on May 1st, the second had a larger turn out and took
place on July 24th at Santos Virgen's Gardenias Salon. The July 24th
tournament was a municipal tournament against Puerto Vallarta, San Juan
and Guadalajara.

Nature: Parotas in Sayulita

After a vacation away, I always know I am home as I head into the final
stretch of the highway past Bucerias, heading towards Sayulita. The
roadside pandemonium ends, and the jungle greets me. Towering above,
sometimes creating a tunnel-like feel, are the giant Parota trees.
Their beautiful form is a welcoming for me, a symbol of this area,

A View From The Line-Up: A Northwest Passage

About a month after arriving here in Seattle, I finally got to the
coast and rode some North Pacific waves last week. The northwest
coastal scenery was fabulous, hanging with friends and family
wonderful-but the water was COLD and the waves mediocre at best. This
northwest surf safari served to remind that living and surfing in
Sayulita is a real privilege. Still, it was an adventure of a sort,
surfing a "local" spot called Hobuck Beach, and the tale is worth
telling, if only to offer contrast with the simplicity and ease of
surfing in Mexico.

The Good Ole Days

Opening the daily business section, I see that the lead story (in our
local newspaper here in the U.S.) is about Coca-Cola. Mexican coke, to
be precise. It seems that the imported beverage is gaining a cult
following in the U.S., with aficionados billing it as being "Old Coke."
Citing the glass bottles and the cane sugar used in its production,
fans of Mexican coke find that the taste is much more enjoyable than
modern coke made with corn syrup and usually only available in plastic
bottles. Many Mexican and other grocery stores in the U.S. are stocking
Mexican-made Coca-Cola and consumers are ready to pay the imported

My favorite drink is a Mango Lassi. I like it because it tastes good
and it is easy to make if you're a little thirsty and a little hungry
and your parents are sleeping. Since there are lots of mangos in
Sayulita right now, it's not expensive to get mangos, in fact you can
get mangos for free! My school, Costa Verde, has lots of mangos falling
from the trees.

Last August I remember riding bikes around with my husband and daughter
looking for a place to eat dinner. None of our usual places were open,
so we ended up eating ice cream and going home--not horrible, but we

Where you were born and how old are you?

Aurelio: my full name is Aurelio Becerra. I was born in Amatlan de
Canas, Nayarit in November of 1910, the year of the revolution. I am
going to be 100 years old this year. I had an aunt who lived to be 115
years old.
Doña Chelo: My name is Consuelo Ramirez Partida. I am 78 years
old. I came to Sayulita with my husband when I was 13 years old. We
have been in Sayulita for 65 years.

Aurelio: mi nombre completo es Aurelio Becerra, nací en Amatlan de
Canas, Nayarit en noviembre de 1910, el año de la revolución. Este año
