Greetings 5,361 El Sayulero Readers,
With the first real rains of the summer soaking the village
last night at dusk, summer has officially arrived to Sayulita. The dust has been washed off of
everything; puddles are still scattered throughout the cobblestone streets; and
you can practically HEAR the jungle growing at any given moment. Despite the mild humidity, summertime
in Sayulita continues to offer an incredible environment for living and
vacationing in this part of paradise. As in all of Mexico, World Cup fever continues to affect our
visitors/residents by practically shutting down all commerce when Mexico's
soccer (football) players take to the field in South Africa. If you have yet to do so, make sure to
check out a game at any of the Sayulita bars and cantinas. The next game is at 9AM on Tuesday,
June 22, versus Uruguay. Our Sayulero edition this week is packed full of local news
with plenty of familiar names and faces. Anyone who thinks our village quiets down in June will change their mind
after reading all our stories. Once again, I would like to thank our incredible team of
volunteer contributors (welcome newest writer Leah Jewall) who generously
donate their time and talents to keep all of us abreast of the local scene here
in Sayulita. All of you help make

Saludos a los 5,361 lectores de El Sayulero,
Con las primeras lluvias del verano mojando el pueblo anoche, el verano oficialmente ha comenzado en Sayulita. Se ha lavado el polvo de todo, los charcos siguen por varias partes de las calles empedradas, y casi se puede escuchar como esta creciendo la selva. A pesar de la humidad, el verano en Sayulita sigue ofreciendo un ambiente increible para vivir y vacacionar en este paraiso.Igual que en todas partes de Mexico, la fiebre de la copa mundial esta afectando los visitantes y residentes por cerrar los negocios durante los partidos de futbol en que juega la selección Mexicana en Sud Africa. Si aun no lo has hecho, asegurate ir a cualquiera de los bares y cantinas locales para ver un partido. Changes To Calle Miramar

Anyone who has traversed the length of Miramar Street between Calle
Revolución and Palmar recently will have noticed a veritable obstacle
course with lots of digging, excavations and piles of dirt. Sayulita
city hall has authorized construction of the installation of registros

Plaza beginning at 5:00 PM to help the Home "A Heaven for an angel" that is
located in Guadalajara. Our citizen Maria Esther Chavez has seen the needs this organization has that does such incredible work for
children who have been abandoned, living in deplorable conditions,

Music With a Flavor of The Coast

Many people complain about the noise. Others do not even consider it
music. There are plenty of opinions, but what is real is that now
Sayulita has its own music band. One of the most popular trends of
Mexican folk music, called banda, or as I like to call it our very
unique country music. There is a prejudice against banda music, since
many of the narcos listen to it and some of the stories that the musicians
tell in their songs are about the life of the mafia moguls. More > Mucha gente se queja del ruido. Otros

Sayulita's Hanaloa Fishing Team Wins First Place at International Fishing Tournament
| 
Sayulita's Hanaloa Fishing Team run by Victor Ortega and Juan Munoz won
first prize in the tuna division at the the San Blas 50th anniversary
international fishing tournament. The major prizes where for sailfish,
marlin and Mahi Mahi, but the fishing this year was very slow, with an
average of six fish a day caught and a total of 68 boats in the

Munoz ganaron el primer lugar en la categoruia de Atun en el 50
aniversario del torneo de pesca de San Blas. Los premios mayores fueron

New Indigenous Awareness Center Opens in Sayulita

Planeta Indigena is a new indigenous awareness center now opened in
Sayulita located on Calle Revolucion just before the bridge into town
and across from Yo Yo Mos. The first meeting among women to further
discuss the goals and benefits of the awareness center was held on
Monday June 14th. The building will be open all summer; however the

School of Surf

While the recent Surfathon in support of Sayulita's own Costa Verde
International School lacked, well, much surf--it was about knee to
waist high, slightly bumpy, and shapeless--on this particular warm,
sunny day it didn't seem to matter. Dozens of kids from the school had
a ball, plenty of parents, teachers, volunteers, and other sponsored
surfers made their splash in the water, and a ton of money was raised

The View From Under The Covers

It just doesn't seem fair. All that sunshine out there and I'm in here
stuck in bed with a stupid cold. All the birds flying by and talking
seem to be mocking the fact that they are out there among the lush
plants, trees and sunshine, while I am trying to decide which DVD to
watch again and trying to find some room on the bed between the cats.

A Trip to a Volcano

Last month, my school here in Sayulita - Costa Verde International
School - decided to take the 4th, 5th and 6th graders on a field trip
to the Volcano named Ceboruco. The drive to the volcano from Sayulita
takes about three hours. We drove north through lava fields, saw many
types of cactus and agave fields, and drove into the mountains.

Nature Corner: Sayulita Land Crabs

Visitors who arrive in Sayulita during the rainy season (June-October)
and decide to take a leisurely walk through the jungle towards the
beach, are usually quite surprised, even shocked, to find the jungle
floor literally teeming with thousands of purple-and -yellow and red
land crabs. Crabs seem to be foraging everywhere in the leaf litter,
wildly waving their claws and scurrying away to their burrows and caves

Home and Away: Trouble In Paradise?

Hello, Sayulita! I haven't written for a month or more because,
frankly, I didn't think I had anything to say. When I was asked to
write a series of articles for El Sayulero, they were meant to cover
the joys and woes of running a business such as ours from a distance. That kind of fell by the wayside, as we were in Sayulita for the
winter, looking after things ourselves, first-hand, and with the

Pet of the Week: "Cristy and Berni"

Cristy and Berni are sister and brother and they were born because the
owner wanted to sell them and make some money with the "selling puppy
business." Nobody bought them so they are of no use and the owner wants
them gone. They live in a neighborhood where poisoning takes place
whenever a dog is a burden or of "no use". These puppies need to get off
"death row"! Please adopt one or both. They

Every night around sunset you hear it--the Sayulita Banda is starting
to practice. Not everyone is happy to hear them, but they always make
me smile--those discordant mixture of sounds floating thru the air. I
have to say, they really have improved over the last year--this is the

I am from Tahiti Island which is the capital of the French Polynesian
Islands. I first came to Sayulita 7 years ago. A friend invited me here
