Greetings 5,308 El Sayulero Readers,
I am not sure switching to bi-weekly issues is giving
the El Sayulero editors any extra summer fun time. This edition seems to be double in size compared to a normal
week. Part of the extra news comes
from a few new writers joining our staff. Astrid Vanya is going to be sharing what Sayulita looks like from a kid's
view while Octavia Jolley and Daniel Brewer have started a Nature column
dedicated to focusing on the plant and animal life in our area. Welcome new contributors and thanks for
all your great El Sayulero input.
Speaking of animals:
There have been a lot of jellyfish in the Sayulita Bay lately with
smaller ones washing up on the beach.
Make sure not to pick up any of the shiny dime-size transparent "jewels"
you might see on your next beach stroll.
If you wondered what all the shouting was about all over
Mexico yesterday afternoon, here you go: Mexico beat number one
ranked Italy (2-1) in the World Cup pre-match. Mexico plays South Africa Friday, June 11, at 4PM in the
first official game of the 2010 World Cup.
Not-To-Miss-Events
Saturday Morning (June 5): Punta
Sayulita Beach Cleanup
Saturday Afternoon (June 5): CVIS
Surfathon
Monday evening (June 7): Fundraiser
for Juan Carlos at Don Pedros.
On a final note, one of our readers forwarded me a great news article about what so many of us already know to be true.
Mexico's border town drug wars continue to have zero effect on the
peace, safety, and tranquility of most of the country. Especially coastal villages like
Sayulita!

Love Sayulita? I Do.
| By: Andrea Villarrubia
You've all heard me wax poetic about what a great family town Sayulita
is - whether to vacation or to live - but it's been a little while so I
thought I'd wax from a different perspective. Apart from my most
important job of being Maximo's Mama, and my (of course) very important
responsibility of writing a certain column, my job that pays the bills
is my wedding planning business. More>
Mas>

Why We Live Here (The Surfer's Version)
| By: Justin Henderson
My family is heading back to Seattle, Washington for a month this
summer, to see our US friends and do some business. And to experience
some ersatz version of our previous American life. You remember, the
way we once lived. We moved here a year ago in July and haven't been
back to the U.S. since, so it'll be an interesting time, I'm sure. More >

How Commitees Are Formed At GPS
| By: Grupo Pro Sayulita - Eric Rudd
When someone discovers a need and steps up to the plate and generates
interest in that area, usually a committee is formed. For example, Mike
Beck realized that no one had a defiberillator in Sayulita, in case
someone has a heart attack. So after discussions and research, Grupo
Pro Sayulita voted to buy one and to loan it to Dr. Moy, who is making
it available to anyone for free! One day, that defibillator will save
somone's life, and it will only be because Mike stepped up to the
plate. Since then, Dr. Moy has taken over the committee. More >

Sayulita Inspirations: Fish Tales
| By: Maria Zache
Here, fishy-fishy! A six-inch, trout-shaped fish had swum up next to me
and was very intent on finding out who or what I was. I had taken our
kayak out on our little lake (in the northern U.S.) and beached it by
some reeds and cattails in a sandy area, waded around and now was
sitting in the water which was an extremely comfortable temperature,
considering it was only Memorial Day weekend. More >

Mas >

Jicama and Coconut Oil, Did ya Know?
| By: Josh and Shelly
We can't really say there is such a thing as a bad fruit or vegetable.
There is a discussion to be had about how much sugar vs. fiber is in
your produce, but we will save that for another day. This week we've
choosen to increase our community's Food IQ by shedding some light
on Jicama and Coconut oil. Two misunderstood and under-represented
vegetables (coconut meat is fruit while the oil is considered veg). More >
Mas >

Cool Treats To Beat The Heat
| By: Astrid Vanya
Today seemed really hot and I wanted a cool sweet treat. Here in
Sayulita there are lots of delicious snacks, like Helado, Paletas, Agua
Frescas and Respados. Helado is ice cream, Paletas are yummy popsicles
and Respados are shaved ice. I decided I wanted to go to my favourite
ice cream place, Wakika. Wakika sells ice cream, popsicles and
aguafrescas (sweet fruit drinks.) It's owned by my friend Duilio's
family. More >

Nature Corner: Sayulita Plant Life
| By: Octavia & Daniel
As you have been cruising around Sayulita lately, you may have noticed
a big tall tree with brillant yellow flower clusters standing alone
amongst an open field or hidden within other tree species. It looks as
if there is no greenery, just these showy flowers mounted upon a light
colored trunk, lighting up the landscape with its color. This is the
magnificient Primavera tree, which turns out to be the material of
choice for many windows and doors on our homes here in Sayulita. More >

Pet of the Week: "Milly"
|
This dog's name is Milly. Her grayed muzzle
and deeply lined brow show her age. So does her wrinkled mouth, which opens to
reveal soft pink gums but very few teeth. Milly's teats droop low - nearly
dragging on the ground following her most recent pregnancy, and her calloused
hind betrays a lifetime lived on the street. The hundred or so puppies Milly has birthed
and raised during her life have taken a toll on her body. She is currently
being treated for both breast cancer and a vaginal tumor. As she lives out the
final three or four years of her life, Milly will require a monthly pill to
treat her developing heart condition. It is finally Milly's turn to live in
comfort and companionship. Help care for
Milly just like she has cared for so many puppies. The cost of Milly's
immediate medical care is estimated at around MX$7,000 (600 USD). Sayulitanimals asks you to help fund Milly's medical costs. And, even more
importantly, we are looking for a loving, dedicated person to adopt Milly when
she recovers from her treatments and to live her final years in dignity and
respect . You can make a donation to Milly's medical
care via PayPal at www.sayulitanimals.org or www.spcapv.com. Please specify that the donation is for Milly. To find out more about
adopting Milly, please contact Sara Briner of Sayulitanimals or Janice
Chatterton of the SPCA de PV at janice@haciendasanangel.com.
