Family Field Trip!
La Peñita Market

By: Andrea Villarrubia

La Penita Market PlaceOne of my favorite field trips from Sayulita is the La Peñita market, which happens every Thursday. Market shopping is such a rich and interactive experience, so different from the sanitized supermarkets that we are all so familiar with. It's so refreshing - and such an important experience for children - to break out of the routine of Mega and Walmart, and buy the week's provisions from real, local folks selling products that they had a hand in making or growing. The La Peñita market in particular embodies a wonderful duality, as a showcase for Artisans and handicrafts, and as a functional market selling tons of things that we all need: from hardware to spices to produce to clothes hangers.

For The Love Of The Game: The Kids Go to Talpa!

By: Yésica Doreli Ramos Gómez

SoccerSports will be always a benefit for Young kids and teenagers. It helps them to keep busy. To stay away from alcohol and drugs; inculcates discipline and values. Its a formation for life. Martín Flores is one of those unknown heroes. Since more than 10 years ago, he has made a living on training the kids and teenagers from many generations in Sayulita in the sport that most people, except Sayulita, plays in Mexico: soccer. In a town where most of the people loves baseball, there is a minority of us whom loveeees soccer(including myself). More->

One Lucky Pigeon

By: Juanita "Tuck" Tucker

Pigeon Last weekend Karen Reyes, realtor and owner of Calakmul, Susana of Galeria Tanana, and Omar of Monchi's, were checking the progress of the renovations going on at the former restaurant. One of the men working on the new palapa called their attention to an abandoned baby pigeon he and his co-workers had been caring for. The trabajador had been giving the pigeon water and bits of tortilla to keep it alive, however it was in sad shape. More->

The After-Fiesta Week

By: Grupo Pro Sayulita

GPSIt has been a relatively quiet week after the big successful fiesta-fundaiser last week.  Totals matched - and most likely exceeded - last year's total of more 300,0000 pesos - which is more than $25,000 (U.S.)!   Exact comparisons are difficult because of the dollar/pesos exchange rate change, and because of the various donations that came in through different channels.  We pretty much had capacity crowd, above 255 people, and best of all, one heck of a great party.
Home and Away: Signs, Signs Everywhere Are Signs

By: Letitia Gumby

SignsAnd more and more and more of them are in English only.  In Sayulita, Mexico, where the vast majority of residents are Mexican, one can't go down any road in the centre of this beautiful village without seeing businesses with English-language names offering services spelled out solely in English.  This troubles me.  In my home province of Quebec, Canada, the population is overwhelmingly French.  A problem existed though.  While the majority of the population was French, increasingly the language of commerce was becoming English.  So much so that the majority French population began to feel excluded and, worse, disenfranchised.  I can see Sayulita headed in the same direction.  Very, very quickly.

"Trip to Puerto Vallarta"

By: Donna Day

Aztec Dancer

Every once in a while, one must make a trip to Puerto Vallarta. But it doesn't always have to be to Costco or the movies. I made one such trip a while ago just to do the art walk and happened to see these cool Aztec dancers right on the beach in Old Town.
