Greetings 5,577 El Sayulero Readers,
I have never seen a Sayulita "winter" rain like what we all
experienced here this last week.
The downpour came in torrential buckets reminding me of the summer
storms. However, the drop in
temperature made me feel like I was back in the Northwest! Ni modo!
The sun is back out today and with it comes hundreds of
smiling resident and local faces.
The streets have all been washed clean and the dust should stay down for
another few weeks. Plants are
thriving and all the puddles have almost dried up already.
The team of El Sayulero writers continues to pump out great
articles and I just want to again express my (and all of our readers')
gratitude for their dedication.

Pick of this week:
Filet mignon with wild mushroom sauce, topped with panella cheese, and
enjoyed with a glass of Malbec at Miro Vino.
Nunca he visto un "invierno" tan lluvioso en Sayulita como tuvimos en esta semana. El chaparron llego con una gran cantidad de lluvia torrencial que me recordo de tormentas de los veranos. Sin embargo, la bajada en tempuratura me hizo sentir como si estuviera en el noroeste. Ni modo!
El sol ya salio hoy junto con muchos residentes y locales sonriendo. Las calles estan limpias por las lluvias y no debe de haber polvo por unas semanas mas. La vegetacion esta prospera y casi todos los charcos se han secado.
El equipo de escritores de El Sayulero sigue trabajando para sacar buenos articulos y de nuevo quiero expresar (y de parte de los lectores) lo agradacido que estoy por todo su trabajo excelente.

 All of this unseasonably wet winter weather in Sayulita has me craving soups and
tea and wanting to cuddle up on the couch with a good book. Though
surely a bummer for the vacation set, it's a refreshing change for us
who live here, and for the plantlife. It's been nice to burrow into the
house and enjoy the cool weather and gray days (says the chica who's
work is all on the computer this week, and who doesn't have to go
outside much...).
What I really want to do is spend the afternoon baking (and eating)
cookies, but the realities of work and deadlines beckon, so what I have
time for is a quick and easy, but hearty and healthy broccoli soup.

Todo este clima lluviosa y fria me tiene deseando sopas, té y tiempo en
el sofá con un buen libro. Por supuesto es un engorro para las
turistas, pero es un cambio refrescante para nos que vivimos aquí, y
para las plantas. He disfrutado a quedarme en casa estos días (con
suerte, mi trabajo es todo por computadora esta semana, y no tengo que
salir mucho por afuera...)

What Time Is It, Sayulita?
 Starting in April, visitors to Sayulita won't have to worry about
missing their flights or being late for appointments because the time
changes between here and Puerto Vallarta. According to an
official decree posted on the Mexican Federal Government's website last
month, Bahia de Banderas county will switch from Mountain time to
Central Time on the first Sunday in April of this year, when the switch
to Daylight Savings Time is made. More->
A partir de abril, visitantes a Sayulita no tendran que preocuparse sobre perder sus vuelo por la diferencia de cambio de hora entre aqui y Puerto Vallarta. Segun un informe oficial publicado el mes pasado en la pagina web del gobierno federal de Mexico, Bahia de Banderas cambiara del horario de las montanas al horario de la zona central apartir del primer domingo en abril.

 On January 16th friends got in contact with each other after many years
apart thanks to the El Sayulero Interviews. A year and a half ago
Adriana Mendoza de Cadena was one of our interviewees in the El
Sayulero newsletter where she mentioned that she was married to Jose
Angel Cadena Rodriguez, owner of the Michoacana ice cream shop. Maria
Elena Sanchez from Mexico City was an old friend of Jose Angel and his
family when she lived in Sayulita with them 27 years ago. More->
El día 16 de enero unos viejos amigos se pusieron en contacto después
de muchos anos separados gracias a una entrevista en El Sayulero. Hace
un año y media una de nuestras entrevistadas, Adriana Mendoza de Cadena
menciono que estaba casado a José Ángel Cadena Rodríguez, dueño de la
paleteria La Michoacana. María Elena Sánchez de la Ciudad de México era
una amiga de José Ángel y su familia cuando ella vivía aquí con ellos
hace 27 años

 A couple of
weeks ago, a traffic officer tried with no success to remove my car
licence plates when the guy who delivered my car from the car wash
parked it next to the plaza. According to the officers,its prohibited to
park next to the plaza because its a two-way road, but what is totally
weird to me, is that they only take the plates away on one side of the
plaza and next to the church they dont do it. Interesting. Or that the
municipal and local authorities are aware about the traffic problems in
Sayulita and still give Permissions to the restaurants around the plaza
to place tables on the street, taking the few parking spots. This
coming Monday, we mexicans, celebrated in substitution of february 5th,
the day of our Constitution. Thousands of Vacationers went to the
beaches in Mexico. this weekend was packed with people and cars trying
to park...i saw it! The Chaos!

unas semanas, un oficial de tránsito trató de quitarme las placas
cuando el chico del car wash estacionó mi auto junto a la plaza. Según
los oficiales, está prohibido estacionarse ahí por que la calle es de
doble vía, pero se me hace muy raro, que sólo quiten las placas por la
calle marlín y no junto a la iglesia, o que se otorguen permisos a
restaurantes para poner mesas en la calle cuando tenemos un serio
problema de estacionamiento. Este fin de semana hubo un puente, y vi el
caos vial. De acuerdo a la ley de Tránsito Estatal no contempla la
remoción de placas por parte de los oficiales, sino, un folio por
infracción de tránsito. Desde mi punto de vista, se debe dar una buena
educación vial. |
Home & Away: Ain't No Sunshine When He's Gone
So The Husband headed back to Montreal for a few days of unexpected
business. Just at the same time as the sun decided to disappear for
the week. So he's up north where it's a high of -10C and sunny and I'm
here where it's a high of 25C and rainy. Oh, how I do love irony.

 Do you think sunburns would be a common cause of visit to a doctor here
in Sayulita? I would think this could be true if you consider that lots
of people come to this beautiful town specifically to enjoy sunbathing
and spend a lot of time under sun exposure. The truth is that I haven't
seen a sunburn patient in a long time.

 "I've finally been behind the curtain," I told my husband upon my
recent return from La Yerba and Julia's coffee plantation. Julia, Yadi
and Linda had taken in Nancy and myself for the weekend. They shared
their family with us as they also shared their knowledge of growing,
picking and processing coffee. Nancy was looking to learn more about
the provenance of the beans she sells at her family's Libreria Sayulita
(the bookstore, on the north end of town) and I had invited myself
along. I was fascinated with the prospect of visiting a small
town in the mountains and also with learning more about the origins of
a revered morning beverage. More->
"Finalmente he estado detrus del telon," le dije a mi esposo
en cuanto regrese de La Yerba y la plantacion de Cafe de Julia. Yadi,
Linda y Julia nos llevaron a mi y a Nanci para por el fin de semana.
Compartieon su familia con nosotras, asi como su conocimiento en el
sembradio, recolecte y procesamiento del cafe. Nancy esta buscando
aprender mas acerca del origen de los granos que vende en la Libreria
Sayulita que pertenece a su familia, y yo me invite sola. Estaba
fascinada con la idea de visitar un pueblo pequeno en las montanas y
tambien de aprender mas acerca de los origenes de tan reverenciada
bebida mananera.

Better Home Security and New Police Information
 At the Grupo Pro Sayulita weekly meeting, Mike Beck introduced
Comandante Trujillo (who rotates shifts with Comandante Andrade) to
discuss with members, "How can we help each other to make Sayulita a
safe place to live and visit?" It's important that their Municipal police station, at the beach, be
fully operational. Sr. Trujillo asked GPS to help with furnishings.
Tuck volunteered to take charge of helping to make the station
habitable. Contact Tuck at 329-291-3685 or 322-121-9327 for donations
of used furnishings or email jmt@tuck-id.com. She is looking into helping the Tourist police station as well.

The first time I went to see Lucha Libre was last summer
(it was at least 105º F) in San Pancho. There was lots of strutting
and posturing. I got some fun shots. It really was all about the
costumes.

Pet Of The Week
"Negrita"
 Negrita
was brought to Sayulitanimals by her 12 year old owner to get spayed
last week. She was covered in ticks, dirty and very scared and timid.
Because of the many ticks she has Erlichia, a treatable illness caused
by the parasites. Sayulitanimals kept her overnight because she needed
to be supervised. Next day the owner never came to pick Negrita up. Now
we are looking for a good home for her. She is about 9 months old,
getting more self confident by the day and is very friendly with other
dogs.

fue traida la semana pasada para estirilizacion por su dueno, un nino
de 12 anos. Estaba cubierta de garrapatas, sucia, timida y asustada. A
causa d tantas garrapatas ella tiene "erlichia", una enfermedad
tratable causada por estos parasitos. Sayulitanimals la cuido por esa
noche para poder ser supervisada y al dia siguiente su dueno nunca
regreso a recogerla. Ahora estamos buscando un buen hogar para ella.
Ella tiene alrededor de 9 meses, cada dia tiene mas confianza con la
gente y es muy amigable con otros perros.
