Letter to the editor
"Wake Up and Smell the Plastic"

GarbageSomething I didn't realize when we bought a house in Sayulita; that burning garbage is some kind of rite (or right).  Or, maybe it's just a hobby.  Now that we have garbage collection, you think this burning basura business might have stopped, but, no, it seems to have proliferated, i.e., become worse, and the burning happens to also burn my butt.  Read entire letter.
Family Field Trip! San Pancho's Centro Comunitario Educativo

Family Trip! San Pancho's Centro Comunitario Educativo
As awesome as Sayulita is, and as much as many of us never want to leave, it's always nice to stretch out, explore a little, and breathe some different air in a neighboring pueblo. Luckily, Sayulita is surrounded by other charming towns and lovely beaches to explore. So gather the troops and head out for a Family Field Trip! This week Maxxi & I took a short drive over to San Pancho to meet up with our friends Octavia & Lucca and check out the awesome new Entre Amigos Community Center and Library. More->

Free Spay and Neuter Clinic Helping "Fix" Animal Overpopulation in Sayulita

Neuter ClinicFree Spay and Neuter ClinicDr. Chris Holmes
his "fixing" an assembly line of cats and dogs this week - and his wife and kids are getting a beach vacation at the same time. Chris is a veterinarian from Lakeport, California who volunteered to run a spay/neuter clinic (by donation) at Sayulitanimals this week in exchange for a place to stay for himself and his family. On Wednesday morning he was starting work on a full line-up of cats - Tuesday was dog day. "My wife and kids are playing on the beach right now," Chris said as he checked on a grey kitten named Gary. Bad Odor Coming From Sayulita's Water Treatment Plant This Week
By: Lindsay Walter

Water Treatment Plant in SayulitaMany people who live near, vacationed near, or just walking by Sayulita's water treatment plant this last weekend would have smelled a foul odour in the air. Lazaro Cardenas Garcia, the manager of Sayulita's water treatment plant located on the North side of the river by the beach said the bad smell was caused by two air vents that broke on Saturday, January 23rd. New air vents and fan blowers costing $9,500 USD had to be ordered in from Guadalajara in order to fix the recent problem. Lazaro says all measures are taken immediately if a piece of equipment breaks down to ensure there is no bad smell lingering since the water plant is so close to the centre of Sayulita and the beach. Also, due to its location, Sayulita's water treatment plant has special machinery and equipment that is more sound proof than other water treatment plants in Mexico.  More->

Friends and "Friends"
By: Letitia Gumby

Friends and "Friends"Some friends have just arrived to stay with us in Sayulita for a couple of weeks.  We have been inundated with friends ever since we built our home here.  I don't mind; in fact, I love seeing them, as we never have time to see them in Montreal, but it does seem at times as though we are like the proverbial family with the only pool on the block.  Suddenly, everyone wants to be our friend!  The fact that we do, in fact, have a pool here, as well as the magnificent Pacific, doesn't seem to hurt.

Sick In Sayulita

Sick in Sayulita

This week there was a dramatic increase in cases of vomiting and diarrhea as I haven't seen before and it is quite possible that the cause of everything is the presence of a viral infection in the village. The infection that we are having right now in Sayulita, has proved highly contagious as we have observed appearance of symptoms after 18 to 24 hours among people who had contact with sick people. Sayulita Coffee Culture: A Crash Course
By: Maria Zache

Coffee CultureBarely able to maintain a footing in my all-terrain Keens, I noticed that Santos was standing comfortably only in flip-flops.  Still huffing and puffing from my climb up the mountain, I started to be able to take in my surroundings and to see members of Yadi's family through the dense foliage, picking red coffee beans.  Each picker, mostly Yadi's Aunts, had a large basket strapped to their fronts at the waist.  The name for the basket - Chiquihuite (CheekyWEEtay) - became my new favorite word for the weekend. More->

Grupo Pro Sayulita Reports

Grupo Pro Sayulita ReportsMost organizations operate quietly.  In a small community, it's hard for Grupo Pro Sayulita to stay hidden - especially when there are many generous people volunteering some time to help our village, even though progress can be frustrating and slow.  Volunteers live here, and we know as well as you when the trash piles up, when there's crime, when the roads stay dusty, when the kids are not getting a proper education in an adequate setting, when plastic is not getting recycled, and so much more.  All we can say is that we are trying-and yes, if we had more volunteers, even for a few hours a week, we could do more.  Our mission is to make Sayulita a better place to live and visit. more->

"Sayulita Cemetary"
By: Donna Day

Sayulita Cemetary

Being a big fan of old fashioned horror movies, especially those featuring vampires, zombies and other creatures that rise from the dead, I wouldn't normally choose to go to a cemetary by myself at night.
 Pet Of The Week
"Bubbles (again)"

BubblesThis sweet young dog has gigantic ears and an effervescent personality to match. She is happy and curious, but also polite and respectful; she knows she must sit to receive a treat or a meal. She enjoys wrestling with other dogs of all shapes and sizes and loves burying her nose in the sand on the beach! Bubbles' weakness is stuffed toys and pillows, so be sure to have a few stuffed animals around for her to play with. Around people, Bubbles is both calm and submissive and she is quick to obey her person. She is a medium-sized dog and has been spayed and dewormed. Bubbles will make a great addition to her forever family.

 Bazaar Announcement

Help Support our 2nd Friday Plaza Bazaar.  It's like a big garage sale, only it's in the Sayulita Plaza.  It is 100% volunteer run, and 100% of the proceeds go straight to Sayulitanimals.  Our first Plaza Bazar raised nearly $9000 pesos.  With donations coming from a small handful of people, we see this as a huge success.  Now we need YOU, to help make our 2nd Plaza Bazar better than the first.

Look in your closets, under beds, garage corners...  If you don't need it, donate it.  Bring it to the plaza, February 5th at 1:30pm.  Drop it off, and we'll do the rest.  If you can't make it to the plaza, bring your stuff to the Sayulitanimals office whenever you can.  Remember, one man's junk is another man's treasure, and IT'S FOR THE ANIMALS!  Then, at 2:00, come shopping.  If the 2nd Bazar is anything like the first, then get ready to score some huge bargains.  We had Evelyn Boren prints, copper art and home furnishings, movies, books, clothes, sheets, towels, blankets, a surf kite, telephones,...

A huge thank you to last month's donators, and giant call to this month's: the animals need your help.  Thank You.

Muchas gracias.

First time in Sayulita? My first time in Sayulita was summer of 2005. My wife and I had been to Puerto Vallarta and we enjoyed Puerto Vallarta but we wanted to find someplace new. We found Sayulita and we stayed here for 1 week. I always enjoyed painting while traveling and I took some paintings I did to the Gypsy gallery to sell. I arranged an art show for fall of 2005 and that's when we came back to Sayulita and we bought a house. We both realized that Sayulita is where we wanted to be. Read entire interview

Thanks for reading.  Please let us know your opinions, suggestions, complaints or anything else you feel will help make Sayulita a better place in which to live and vacation.
