Greetings!

Brovey New

Bonjour, Bueños dias, Ohayo gozaimasu and  Shalom!

In other words, Hello!  In my experience,  a couple of words spoken to someone in their native tongue goes quite far in establishing rapport and forming a bond, and they almost always bring a smile.  As our January speaker pointed out, just taking that extra step to show sensitivity can make a big difference in a relationship.

This month's program will focus on the interesting subject of donors with multinational interests. Read the Feature Article and you will see that while there are obvious technical issues, "people issues" can be especially important when different cultures are involved.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the February meetings. As always, I welcome your input and feedback at any time.

ASK THE PRESIDENT

Q: How can I be more involved in PPGGNY?
A:
From time to time members come up to me after meetings or send me an email indicating they are interested in becoming more active in PPGGNY. For those who are interested, we can find a spot for you on a Committee (click here for a description of our Committees) or you could volunteer to wear a "Ask me about PPGGNY" pin at a meeting and help us welcome new members.

John Bacon, Past President, is focusing on identifying prospective Board members, who are usually nominated because of service to PPGGNY on a Committee or in some other way. If you are interested in being more involved, please click here and let us know of your interest.

When I joined PPGGNY a  decade ago I attended meetings regularly and after a few years I indicated my interest in being more involved. I helped with registration and started to meet members. Then I served as a co-chair of a track at what was then called Planned Giving Day (now NYPPS) 2007 and 2008. Then I was elected to the Board, served as co-chair of NYPPS, and as Vice President, and I am now proudly serving as your President in year one of a two-year term. It's a fulfilling way to "give back" to gift planning, and a wonderful way to network with people: members, speakers and sponsors. Won't you join me?

If you have a question for The President, please send us  e-mail.

FEBRUARY 15th LUNCHEON
Charitable Giving with the Multinational Donor
Speaker: Paula Jones, Esq.

Charitable Giving with the Multinational Donor will educate advisors who work with high-net worth donors about the rise of the client with international interests.

First, a profile of how our field of expertise is becoming increasingly international will be illustrated. The federal estate tax, federal gift tax and the federal income tax operate differently within this unique but growing population and these differences are explained.

Charitable giving as part of a comprehensive estate plan for these individuals will be discussed, including issues such as the extent of the benefit of a U.S. charitable income tax deduction for non-resident aliens ("NRA"s), use of charitable lead and charitable remainder trusts in a cross-border context and charitable contributions of foreign property.

Paula JonesPaula Jones is an Associate in the Philadelphia office of Drinker Biddle, LLP, where she advises high net worth individuals in wealth planning matters, with a focus on international planning. She advises clients on all aspects of U.S. estate and gift taxation, the creation, migration and maintenance of U.S. and foreign trusts, pre-immigration planning for non-resident aliens coming to the United States, expatriation tax planning for residents and citizens leaving the United States, charitable giving overseas, offshore account compliance, administration of estates of foreign individuals with U.S. property and other related matters. read more

Meal of the Day: Baked Salmon. Vegetarian and Kosher options are available if requested by Noon on Feburary 14th.

Luncheon Registration: Members $60; Non-members & On-site: $75

Continuing Education Update
CFRE Logo
Thanks to the efforts our Accreditation Committee, and particularly those of it's Co-Chair, PPGGNY Board Member Dianne Armstrong, CFRE, it is a pleasure to report that PPGGNY has been approved as a  continuing education provider for 2012 by CFRE International, and that this approval extends to all events that have been previously submitted.

PPP Update

A member of the PPP Board of Directors will be contacting Alexandra Brovey, PPGGNY President, to request an update on our Council, as well as to solicit answers to 2 questions:

#1 From your perspective as a Council leader, what is the most valuable program, product or service that PPP could offer to help your Council succeed?  When Alex shared this with the Board, their response was providing support for outreach and building our membership. (Even though PPGGNY is one of the largest Councils nationwide, our numbers are down from 5 or so years ago when we exceeded 300+ members.)

#2 From your perspective as a gift planner, what is the most valuable program, product or service that PPP could offer to help you succeed in your career?  Alex's personal response is information about trends in gift planning and sharing of new ideas.

As part of the new PPP Leadership Institute, Alexandra Brovey will be joining 41 other colleagues from across the nation in Dallas, Texas in early March to discuss some higher-level gift planning ideas and initiatives.  Alex will share these in upcoming issues of The Planner and at PPGGNY meetings.

FEATURE ARTICLE
Catch Me If You Can...

I am a very successful American with an international reputation in my profession; my partner of many years is a similarly successful European in a related profession; we often work together on the same project.

I am in my late 60s; my partner is a little younger. Between us we have neither children nor many living relatives.

Our businesses are headquartered in New York City, but our clients are all over the world. What we do is both creative and highly customized for our clients. Therefore, while we are both computer-literate, we prefer to communicate face-to-face, in writing or by phone.

We maintain an apartment in New York, but spend a great deal of time in our other homes in Paris, Catalonia, Croatia and the Berkshires. None of these homes is particularly grand in size, but each is unique; several have been featured in foreign and domestic publications such as Architectural Digest.

Few of our homes have land-line phones, and few people, apart from clients, personal friends and our business staff, know our phone numbers. Our mail is screened by personal assistants and, if we are away from New York city, it is forwarded to us by express mail.

Note: The above situation is real, the people are real and their descriptions are real...only some details have been blurred to protect their identities.

As a Planned Giving/Major Gift professional would you be intrigued by this situation? How would you approach these prospective donors?  Read the entire article.

 + + + + + + + + + +

NOTE: Our February 15th luncheon presentation will address another interesting aspect of people such as those described at the beginning of this article: how to develop and manage multinational donors and their gifts. Obviously there are tax and legal issues; some of these details will be discussed by Paula Jones, Esq. during the February luncheon program.
