Greetings!
 | John M. Bacon, JD PPGGNY President |
Another year has passed and the time has come again: I look forward to seeing all who read this at the New York Philanthropic Planning Symposium (NYPPS) on May 26 at the Marriott Marquis. Not registered yet? Do so here and be sure to tell your colleagues and other professional acquaintances to do the same. NYPPS this year will feature a plenary session and more than a dozen additional presenters on almost as many topics - do not miss it! At NYPPS, new officers will be nominated for approval and we will also elect three new board members. Many thanks to departing board members Josh Rednik and Richard Slutzky for their hard work while on the board. And a special shout out to Margaret Holman, who will now join our distinguished group of Presidents Emeriti: Margaret was a hard act to follow as President and a great asset on the board as Immediate Past President. We know that Margaret, Josh, and Richard will continue to be involved with PPGGNY, but thank them again for their board service. The PPGGNY Board of Directors and our Presidents Emeriti will be meeting over the summer as in years past to review the past year and to make plans for next year. Thanks to all those who have completed program surveys - yes, we do read them and try to implement the suggestions made and to avoid repeating the problems noted - but we always welcome your feedback and comments. Contact me at jbacon@nypl.org or the PPGGNY office or seek us out at NYPPS. We look forward to hearing from you. See you on May 26 at the Marriott Marquis for a full day of learning, networking, and good times! John M. Bacon, J.D. PPGGNY President |

NYPPS Slight Change of Schedule
We really do read your event surveys...and have made a late-breaking change to the NYPPS 2011 schedule for the Masters Track. You said you wanted to learn more about UPMIFA, so we have replaced the Highlights from the Masters Forum with one completely dedicated to UPMIFA/NYPMIFA, the topic of the final Masters Forum of the 2010-11 season.
The Masters Track (Session 2): 10:30-11:45
NYPMIFA: What You Need to Know, A Case Study, and Some Thoughts
Jennifer Reynoso of the Exempt Organizations Department at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, LLP, will outline the new law, concentrating on those provisions that have donor-relations implications. John Bacon will then discuss how The New York Public Library has started to implement the requirements of NYPMIFA, notably the required notice to donors. Jonathan Gudema of Changing Our World will moderate and will offer his own thoughts on NYPMIFA based on his work with many local charities. Please consider inviting your finance department colleagues to this session so they can learn more about the law and its implications.
NYYPS Luncheon Menu Finalized
Salmon with an Orange Ginger Glaze with chilled pad thai noodles and asian slaw. The vegetarian version substitutes glazed tofu for the salmon. A Kosher version is also available. Contact PPGGNY for any special dietary needs not announced here.
Check out the other speakers and topics on our website, and be sure to register now!

FEATURE ARTICLE
Fundraising and Return on Investment
by Barbara Diehl, Esq.
 | | Barbara Diehl |
As more and more NPOs are deciding that they need to be run in a more "cost-conscious" manner that often pushes the development officer's required fundraising activities into an artificially "for profit" mold, I am concerned that we are losing some of the basic principles of sound development practices. For example, one can raise $1 Million by getting $100 each from 10,000 donors or by getting $1 Million from a single donor. In the long run it is far less expensive to...
