MARCH 2011 |
|
Greetings!
 | John Bacon, JD PPGGNY President |
Do you get a regular stream of LinkedIn, Facebook, and other "invitations" in your inbox like I do? Have you sent a few of your own to colleagues and friends? Staring at your computer screen all day, do you sometimes wonder what happened to the telephone and written letter as effective communication technologies? Have you been laughed at by your children or other young people who prefer "tweeting," texting, and other modes of electronic communication? What do our donors and clients think of these new media?
I still use the telephone and written letter extensively-and best of all, the in-person meeting-but have taken baby steps into the social media world and know it is here to stay. My employer is an active social media user, so I have learned just enough of the jargon to know how little I know. We can and should do more to use social media as a tool in our fundraising work here, and I fortunately have colleagues who can advise on best practices and standards. But these measures and the media themselves are evolving rapidly and will continue to do so, making efforts today likely to be stale within months (remember Friendster and Myspace?). Our March luncheon speaker will explore how social media and philanthropy intersect and will no doubt help spur on my own efforts at work-and home. PPGGNY itself will wade into social media this spring: stay tuned and consider connecting with us when we are up and running. NYPPS registration is up and running, so sign up for that May 26 event if you have not done so already and encourage others to join us.
We serve you, our members and friends, so please keep your comments, suggestions, and inquiries coming to me at jbacon@nypl.org or the PPGGNY office. I look forward to seeing you soon. |

FEATURE ARTICLE What hath God wrought...?
"What hath God wrought" was the first message, sent by Samuel Morse in 1844, via the newest technology of the day - telegraph. Now, do you know what The Academy Awards, the turmoil in the Middle East, and recent PPGGNY surveys have in common? Another new technology, Social Media and Social Networking!
At the Awards, it was "The Social Network" and the story of Facebook. From the Middle East we hear about the use of Facebook and Twitter as the virtually unstoppable means of communication among insurgents. And in PPGGNY surveys it is our own members who provided insightful comments about this new electronic phenomenon. Here is what PPGGNY members had to say:

PPGGNY LUNCHEON: March 16
Social Media & PhilanthropySpeaker: Maria MirandaPhilanthropy professionals know the value of maintaining top-of-mind awareness among active donors as well as potential supporters. A significant amount of resources are dedicated to newsletters, reports and events that share an organization's good works and confirms thoughtful stewardship to giving circles.
Can social media impact this process? Absolutely! | | Maria Miranda |
From sharing information in a more timely manner, to reducing labor and expenses in the preparation/distribution of messages, social media is a real "gift" to philanthropy.
But what social media tool is right for you? How much time will it really take... and really save?
Social media requires an audience... how do you build one?
Maria Miranda, an experienced social media adviser and engaging speaker, will answer these questions plus those posed by attendees, in a hands-on presentation that offers an introduction to social media, with a focus on Facebook - the leading resource in new media. Shedding new light - the theme for NYPPS 2011
This is your annual opportunity to turn up the wattage on your planned giving initiatives with fresh viewpoints and ideas shared by experts over three Educational Tracks:
- Nuts & Bolts: for those who are getting started in philanthropic planning or those who want to review the basic concepts, tools and strategies.
- Masters: for the highly experienced who are looking for cutting-edge information and peer-to-peer exchange of skills and knowledge. This track will feature a panel discussion hosted by PPGGNY Presidents Emeriti that reprises topics covered in our Masters' Forum sessions during the year.
- Innovation: (something new this year!) for those who seek to illuminate standard concepts with innovative approaches to current issues in the world of charitable giving. These sessions will discuss donors' perceptions and new ways donors make decisions.
Aside from its educational value, NYPPS provides a fun way to network with other members in your field. Be sure to register now!
