Greetings!
John Bacon | The time has come: I look forward to seeing all who read this at the New York Philanthropic Planning Symposium (NYPPS) on May 26 at the Marriott Marquis. Not registered yet? Do so here and be sure to tell your colleagues and other professional acquaintances to do the same. NYPPS will feature more than 20 presenters on almost as many topics-do not miss it!
I am pleased to note that this year we have awarded scholarships for the first time to this event. This idea was a hit with our sponsors and supporters, so we had five awards to make to members who may not otherwise been able to attend. Thank you to Tom Bonhag and National Madison Group; Daniel O'Connell, CPA; Ann Woodfield & Ralph Wood of Woodfield Management Resources; and our two anonymous donors who gave in honor of the PPGGNY Board of Directors and the PPGGNY Presidents Emeriti.
Members of the latter groups will be meeting over the summer as in years past to review the past year and to make plans for next year. Thanks to all those who have completed program surveys-yes, we do read them and try to implement the suggestions made and to avoid repeating the problems noted-but we always welcome your feed back and comments. Please feel free to Contact me or the PPGGNY office or seek us out at NYPPS. We look forward to hearing from you.
See you on May 26 at the Marriott Marquis for a full day of learning, networking, and good times!
Best regards,

John M. Bacon, J.D. PPGGNY President |

Time to Invest in Your Education!
When experienced MASTERS want to learn something, they often turn to their peers who have had success dealing with a similar issue. When a workship discussion with a group of Master Planners is lead by a professional with cutting-edge insights, it is an even better learning experience. That's just what you have to look forward to in Session 2, of the Masters Track this year at NYPPS.
Complex Gift Case Studies
Jeff Lydenberg | In this interactive session attendees will review three challenging gift situations and propose solutions for each. Working in small groups these cases will include gift options with a closely-held business, real estate and using a planned gift in a capital campaign. Issues raised by the cases will include gift planning and legal questions but will also touch on ethical, business practice and family wealth issues. This session is a great opportunity to network with experienced gift planning professionals in your community to think creatively and test your knowledge.
Jeff Lydenberg is Vice President for Consulting at PG Calc Incorporated having joined the firm in 1999. PG Calc is an industry leader in planned gift consulting, software and planned gift administration. Jeff is a consultant to non-profits on establishing and operating planned giving programs.
The complete schedule of events, speakers and topics is posted on our website.

Member Profile: Meet Susan Damiani
Susan Daminai
 | Susan Damiani is a one-person cheerleading squad for PPGGNY. She credits the organization for part of her success at St. John's University where she has led gift planning for the past six years. It is that contagious passion that has also made her a valuable board member and co-chair of the PPGGNY's membership committee-- she enlists new members with contagious zeal and the realization of the role that PPGGNY played in her professional life. Before joining St. John's, she served for 12 years as Associate Director with the Futures in Education Foundation of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Susan handled all aspects of school development there, but it was her expertise in marketing and promotion and her commitment to St. John's as an alumna that led her to lead gift planning at the University, which had been a neglected area of development. Within a short time she developed the necessary planned giving promotional materials for the University's 155,000 alumni, enhanced the legacy society, and designed monthly cultivation events to bring prospects and their friends to campus to meet the faculty and students. For the technical side of the business Susan turned to PPGGNY. She networked persistently learning from leaders in the profession such as Charlie Gordy and Jonathan Tidd. Fellow members freely gave her advice and counsel, and as she improved her technical skills to match her marketing ones, the gift planning program grew. Last year, in the midst of a recession, planned giving put the university's development efforts over goal, and this year Susan's department is leading all other fundraising programs at the university. Susan has truly changed the mindset of St. John's, making them take planned giving ...and Susan, very seriously. When asked how someone new to the field can be successful, Susan first admits: "Become a member of PPGGNY!" After the honest plug for the organization, she also acknowledges that a first-rate stewardship program is invaluable to a successful planned giving program. "We receive a lot of repeat gifts as a result of the careful stewardship of our planned gift donors," said Susan. "And being passionate about your mission," she added, "can only help." All good advice from someone who is now sought out for her expertise.
