Pat Cannone

Pat Cannone of the Miami Ohio RedHawks looks to win the NCAA Frozen Four! (Photo taken by Rachel Lewis)

In 2009 we weren't positive if it was possible to run a show as spectacular as we did in 2008, but once again the bar was raised as possibly our best event ever was held. Two years in a row, Sports Plus and their wonderful staff has welcomed State Wars into their home to run the best event of the year. State Wars V was blessed to have 240 teams competing for their state or province in route for a National Championship. The beautiful city of Cincinnati is home of some great sports teams and offers so many different options for families traveling into the city. Our staff also wants to thank the city of Cincinnati for all of their hard work in making State Wars a huge success, especially Leslie Spencer and Karen Kuhlman from the Sports Corp. State director, Jane Okada also needs a "pat on the back" for her great dedication to the state of Ohio and for being such a wonderful State Wars supporter. The players and families of Ohio have been very fortunate to have State Wars in their backyard for two consecutive years, we look to see many of those same players travelling to the Darien Sportsplex this summer for State Wars VI.

Superstar, Pat Cannone of the Miami RedHawks also spends his summers playing roller hockey. So for all you people who have heard that roller hockey is ruining your game you can just watch Pat Cannone this week battle for the chance at a national title in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up on Long Island, NY, Cannone has played roller hockey since the early age of 6 and has won numerous national championships. Throughout his Roller Hockey career, he has played on well known teams such as the Mission Snipers, Kryptonic Comets, Tour Blast, Tour Dragons, and Kuzak Bulldogs.  Pat continues to play roller hockey each summer and is still one of the top players in the country, you may catch a glance of Pat playing for Team New York this summer in the AAA Elite Division, you never know!

Two weeks ago against the Michigan Wolverines, Miami was able to win 3-2  in double overtime where Cannone sniped two goals to help send his team to the Frozen Four. Pat Cannone is a great ambassador of the sport and we hope that the RedHawks can bring home the national title to Oxford, Oh.

Hopefully we will see more players at tryouts this year.  You can
register now online.  See you at the rink!

2000 AAA/AA Division

oh-2000-2009

The 2000 division at State Wars is always one of the most enjoyable because it has grown so much in its first two years of existence. Ohio finished round robin play with a 0-4 record but that didn't stop Brett Schwieterman and Isabel Heminger from chipping in 2 points each and leading the team.

In their third round robin game, Ohio fell to Texas 3-2 in a great game. Alex Kreines would score to tie the game up at 1-1 from a feed by teammate Max Tenover. Both teams would go into the second period with a goal apiece looking to take two points. Almost five minutes into the second period, Seth Davis would snipe a goal from a pass by Isabel Heminger to put Ohio up 2-1. With thrill and excitement coming from the bench, Ohio played some great end to end, team hockey. Texas would then answer back with two goals by Miles Read to make the final score 3-2.

Ohio would fall to New York in the Quarter finals by a 7-1 score. These kids have nothing to hang their heads about because they came together and worked as hard as any team at State Wars V.

Isabel Heminger would represent Team Honor at the Great Skate All Star Game.

1999 AAA/AA Division

Oh-99-2009

As a whole, everyone in the roller hockey community is working to grow our sport from the grass roots up. Fortunately, Ohio is a state that we were able to field a 1999 team in and for that we are very lucky and thank everyone who helped! At the end of the day we hope that teams in these age groups enjoy their experience at State Wars and that the families take in what they have learned on and off the rink.

Ohio had a rough draw at State Wars V where they faced some great teams from, Colorado, Missouri, New Jersey, and North Carolina. The story of this team was definitely goal tender Joseph Burks. Joseph played "unreal" and stopped 76 of 102 shots on goal and had an incredible save % of .745.

In their first game, Ohio would fall to Colorado in a 4-1 where they got out shot 24-8. Joseph Burks would look more like former NHL net minder Sean Burke where he made save after save to keep his team in the game. Matthew Kreines scored to make the score 2-1 but in the end Colorado would be too much for Ohio.

Ohio would go on to face New Jersey in the playoffs. New Jersey would come out flying and take Ohio 8-0.

Matthew Kreines would represent Team Honor at the Great Skate All Star Game.

1998 AAA Division
oh-98aaa-2009

The 1998 AAA Team Ohio finished the round robin with a 0-4 record, in possibly one of the strongest divisions we have ever held at State Wars.  Every team in this division, including Ohio, was made up of some of the top players in North America.  Brett Reed lead his team with four goals and one assist with a total of five points. Ohio lost games to Colorado, Florida, British Columbia, and Missouri.

Ohio would see the powerful Team Missouri led by Blake Kochner in their quarter final match up. Ohio's goalie Jacob Striker would play stellar between the pipes but Missouri would be too strong for Ohio.

These guys deserve a huge round of applause because they played a great tournament against some amazing teams.

Brett Reed would go on to play with Team Pride at the Great Skate All Star.
1998 AA/A Division
Oh-98Aa-2009

Braeden Bowra and his Ohio team seemed to get better and better as the tournament went on. Bowra lead Ohio 1998 AA/A in round robin with two points and Luke Jenkins, Austin Warmbier, and Connor Liette all finished with a point apiece. The 1998 AA/A team finished with a 0-4 record where they faced Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Colorado. Come playoff time, Team Ohio would match up against Michigan who had an 0-4 record as well.

As the game started the fans knew that they this one was going to be a good one! Ohio's very own Luke Jenkings, would put his team on the board just under two minutes into the contest. However, Michigan would answer right back with three goals. Braeden Bowra would find his hat trick and tie up the game at 4-4 which sent the teams into overtime. For six minutes both teams had many chances on their opponents net minders. Unfortunately for Ohio, Michigan would find the back of the net at the 6:32 mark. Ohio was right there and had great scoring chances but couldn't deliver.

Luke Jenkins would make Team Pride and represented Ohio in the Great Skate All Star Game.

1997 AAA/AA Division

OH-97-2009

Ohio was able to finish round robin play with a 1-3 record with a win over Illinois. The speedy 97's were able to score 15 goals in four games. State stud Kole Sherwood lit the lamp with eight goals and one assist to lead his team in round robin. Teammate, Hunter Sheperd also finished with two goals and two assists for four points.

The "home team" clinched the 1997 AA semi final where they would match up against Pennsylvania. By midway through the first period Pennsylvania would have a commanding 3-0 but Ohio would answer back with a goal by Hunter Shepard and another by Kole Sherwood. However, Pennsylvania would pour on a couple more goals and Ohio couldn't come into reach. This loss would send them to the bronze medal game where they would face Illinois.

Ohio would come out of the gate with a goal to make the score 1-0 but Illinois would answer back with two quick goals to send them into the second period with a 2-1 lead. Just a over a minute into the second period, Brett Reed would tally a goal and tie the game up and 2-2. With that momentum, who else but Kole Sherwood would score two goals to help his team take a commanding two goal lead. The game would end at 5-4 and Ohio would be crowned bronze medalists.

Not only would Kole Sherwood get chosen for Team America but he would also take home the Great Skate Top Sniper award along with the Great Skate Fastest Skater award.

1996 AA/A Division
OH-96-2009

The 1996 AA/A had a great team with mix of talent. In their victory over North Carolina, Austin Augustine was able to score two goals to help his team go on to a much needed win. Teammates, Tyler Burich and Benjamin Gincley also notched a goal apiece to help their team gain two points to the standings.

After round robin, Ohio was placed in the "A" division semi finals where they would meet Indiana. Indiana's Sam Zike would start the scoring off to give Indiana a 1-0 lead. The game would remain 1-0 the entire period and both goaltenders would stand on their head. Augustine would bury the biscuit but Indiana would come back strong with three unanswered goals to make the game 4-1.

Ohio would later fall to Michigan in the bronze medal game by a 3-2 score. Michigan's three first period goals would be enough to end the game in their favor. Justin McFarland and Andrew Augustine would have the only goals for Ohio.

Andrew Augustine would also represent Team Honor in the Great Skate All Star game!
1995 AAA/AA Division

oh-95aaa-2009

In one of the top divisions at State Wars each year, Ohio would be right in the middle of the pack tying to games through round robin play. Every summer the OH '95s are one of my favorite teams to watch and were actually the 2008 "blackhorse" to win it all, as chosen by National Director Tim McManus. Ohio's ties would come against Missouri and Illinois to secure them a spot in the "AA" semi final against Illinois.

At the 1:15 mark, Garrett Ezman would score a goal to put his team up early in the contest. Just around 6 minutes or so later John Bonta would tally another goal to put Ohio up 2-0. As we know, roller hockey is a fast paced game where goals can come like rain drops. Ohio would allow Illinois to crawl back into the game and tie the game up at 2-2. Illinois would then go on the power play and score another to give them their first lead of the game. Both teams would exchange a number of goals but Sam Mancini would have the final say in the game and score the winner to send Illinois to the Championship game.

With that loss Ohio would face Michigan in the bronze medal game. At the 2:58 mark Ohio would receive a power play and they would put it to work. Timmy Thurnau would bury a feed from teammate Garrett Ezman to put their team up early. Five minutes later, Michigan's Austin Gateman would pick up a shorthanded puck and make Ohio pay. Gateman would go on a break and bury a "shorty" to bring some momentum back to Michigan's side. Michigan would later go up by a 3-1 score and as the clock ticked, Ohio's chances were getting slimmer. Jimmy Meyer would be able to pick up a loose puck and score his own short handed goal, but that would be all Ohio would have. Michigan would go on to win the game 3-2 and take the bronze medal home to Michigan.  The Ohio team should keep their heads held high as the continue to be one of the top teams in the country and should look to rebound this summer on new ground!

Garrett Ezman would take home the Great Skate Accuracy Shooter award.
1995 A Division
OH-95a-2009

Finishing a tough round robin with only mustering a tie against California, Ohio would hope things would turn around in the playoffs. Ohio would tie California 2-2 and goals would be scored by Josh Larson and Chase Penman. Goaltender Curtis Holtgrefe would finish the game with 18 saves on 20 shots. Finishing at the #8 spot, Ohio would match up against Virginia in the first round of the playoffs.

In a 4-3 win, Josh Larson would finish the game with two goals and teammates Chase Penman and Taylor Sabo would finish with a goal each to help send Ohio into the quarter finals against the #1 seed Michigan.

As the heavy favorites people thought that Michigan was going to just man handle Ohio, but the local players had better thoughts than that. Ohio played some strong team defense and kept themselves in the game. Holtgrefe would finish with 15 saves in the contest with five goals against. Josh Larson would also bury a goal from a feed by Chase Penman but it wouldn't be enough. Michigan would go on to win the game 5-1 and send Ohio home.
1994 AAA/AA Division
Oh-94aaa-2009

Team Ohio has always been solid in the 1994 division, with some very strong players. Jonah Hoover would lead his team with one goal and three assists for a total of four points. Justin McGoldrick and Tyler Ruter would both lead the team with two goals. During round robin Ohio would lose to Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Missouri. There win came against Virginia where they were able to take them 4-2. Justin McGoldrick, Alex Little, and Tyler Ruter would all score first period goals heading into the second period. At 2:29, Ryan Fisher would bury a puck from Jonah Hoover which would make the score 4-0. Virginia would slowly come back but it wouldn't be enough to match Ohio's four goals.

Ohio would go on to the 1994 AA quarter final game where they would see Florida. In a 9-1 game, Ohio would finish the game with 6 different goal scorers with 17 combined points. After the big win against Ohio would move on to semi finals where they would see California. With four straight goals against, Ohio would finally score to make the game 4-1. However, California's four goals would end up being the end of Ohio. The game would end at 6-1 and Ohio would go straight to the bronze medal game where they would face Wisconsin.

Just a minute into the bronze medal game, Wisconsin would get on the board by a goal from Adam Shoenfeld. Towards the end of the first period, Ohio's Jonah Hoover would find an answer to tie the game up at 1-1. Wisconsin would end up scoring two goals to send Ohio home empty handed. Trey Gardner and Eddie Matsushima would score Wisconsin's goals and Ohio just didn't have an answer.

Jonah Hoover would play a stellar tournament and get chosen for the Great Skate All Star Game.

1994 A Division

OH-94a-2009

The Ohio 1994 A team finished round robin  13 goals for but struggled to close games out for wins. Ohio's four losses came to Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Kentucky. Defenseman, Kyle Ross ended the round robin with five goals and two assists to finish with seven total points. Devon Vanstone tied Ross in assists and Jake Shepherd and Nick Cicchinelli both finished with three goals.

Ohio would match up against Kentucky who they lost to earlier in the tournament by a 6-2 score. Kyle Ross scored both goals against Kentucky in the first match and was hoping he could continue his success in the playoffs. Kentucky would roll past Ohio with five, first period goals. Calvin Fix would stop 14 of 20 shots to help his team but unfortunately Ohio couldn't find any offense.

Ohio's Kyle Ross would go on to represent his team in the Great Skate All Star Game.
1993 AAA/AA Division

OH-93aaa-2009

Too many teams in roller hockey, give up when they don't have success immediately.  The opposite is true for the Ohio 1993's who worked hard through some tough years at State Wars, only to receive all of the glory this time around.
The team had a great showing at State Wars V. Of course having Phenoms like JC Campagna and Nick Okada on your team doesn't really hurt! "Camp" finished the round robin with nine goals and three assists to give him 12 points. Teammate Nick Okada lead the team with five assists and was second on the team in goals with three. During round robin, Ohio was able to knock off some strong teams such as New York, New Jersey, and Illinois and tie a great team from Georgia. Finishing with a 3-0-1 record gave them the second seed and a route to the 1993 AAA semi finals where they would face British Columbia.

British Columbia would score an early power play goal but Ohio's Jack Telford would answer right back to tie the game up at 1-1. Nicholas Okada and JC Capagna would both score towards the end of the first period to make the game 3-1 in favor of Ohio. Max Fiedler would score his second of the game for British Columbia but that wouldn't be enough. Ohio would score two more to make the game out of reach and it would finish 6-1. With that win Ohio would go on to face Colorado who sneaked in the first seed.

Just seven seconds into the game, JC Campagna would score his first of four goals to put his team up 1-0. Nicholas Okada would find "Camp" two more times  to make the game 3-0. Colorado would get on the board twice but it just wouldn't be enough to beat the powerful Team Ohio 1993's.

JC Campagna, Nicholas Okada, and Kyle Burich would all make Team America and the Great Skate All Star Game. "Camp" would receive the Warrior High Scorer award and Nicholas Okada would take home the Warrior Most Valuable Defensive player award.

1993 A Division

OH-93a-2009

The 1993 "A" team had a great round robin as they finished up with the second seed. With that second seed finish it looked like they were taking the same road as their 1993 AAA/AA team. Ohio finished with a great 3-1 record with 17 goals for and only 11 goals against. Corey Kadash lead his team with seven goals and two assists and teammate Chris McFarland finished with two goals and two assists for four points. Ohio was able to take down Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Illinois to finish round robin play with six points. There only loss came in a close game against Texas who took Ohio by surprise in a 4-3 game.

Ohio would match up against the #7 seed Colorado. Although Ohio beat Colorado earlier in round robin, this wasn't going to be an easy one for them. Ohio would go down 3-2 in the first period with goals scored by Chris McFarland and Corey Kadash. McFarland and Kadash would answer again with goals to put Ohio up 4-3. However, with just under two minutes left in the game Colorado would strike with two goals! Colorado's Bryce Mc Dougall would score the game winner with 32 seconds left on the clock. Ohio would get upset in the playoffs and Colorado would keep rolling on. Look for this squad to come back with a vengeance in 2010!
1992 AAA/AA Division

OH-92aaa-2009

The Ohio 1992 AAA/AA team came out of the round robin "even steven" with a 2-2 record.  So depending on if you like to look at the glass half full or half empty, the squad had a solid start to the tournament.  Round robin wins came against Colorado and New Jersey and losses came from Michigan and Alberta. JC Campagna lead the charge with five goals and two assists to complete round robing with seven points. Mathew Fischer and Brandon Nazek lead Ohio with three assists and also added six points.

Ohio would finish with the #6 seed where they would meet the #3 seed British Columbia in the quarter finals. British Columbia would score three goals before Ohio's JC Campagna would try to set the tone for Ohio. Jayme Write (BC) would slow down Ohio's momentum and make the score 4-1. Campagna would score two more goals to crawl within one but British Columbia stepped up their game and took a commanding lead. Mathew Fischer would score a late goal for Ohio but at the end of the day British Columbia would be the ones celebrating. Ohio would lose 7-4 and JC Campagna would represent Ohio in the Great Skate All Star Game.
1991 AAA/AA Division

OH-91aaa-2009

The 1991 AAA/AA division had to be one of the most competitive divisions at State Wars V. Once College Scholarships are put on the line, the level of play and the players intensity is magnified.  Yes twelve $1000 scholarships were given out in this division. When there are no teams with undefeated records during round robin and there is no team that clearly is better than the rest you know that it's going to be a great showdown come play off time. Luckily with only five goals against Ohio was able to earn the #1 seed going into the playoffs. During round robin, Ohio took out New York and North Carolina with two great wins but tied Florida and also lost to Colorado in a close 1-0 game. Alan Price and Dann Reynolds let the team with three points.

Ohio received a bye to the semi finals where they met New York who they beat earlier in round robin. This game wouldn't be like like the last one though!  New York knew what Ohio had and wanted to show Ohio who they were messing with. Just 25 seconds into the contest, New York's Danny West would start the scoring off with a nice goal from a feed by Michael Keenan. Ohio would rally back with two goals to take the lead. Goals would be scored by Tyler Weiss and Justin Hartley though with two goals. Teams would play strong offensive hockey and Chris Suskevich would bury a puck by Carl Weedman. This lone second period goal would send this game into overtime for the chance to play in the Championship game. Both goaltenders would play remarkable hockey but Ohio's Alan Price would snipe a goal passed New York's Brandon Morgenstern to end his second half shut out.

Price's goal would send Ohio into the championship game against a very strong team from Florida. Although Ohio out shot Florida 24-19, Florida's goaltender just played "abnormal". Florida's Vinny Cafone lit the lamp for two goals and Florida went on to win 2-0.

Alan Price would play for Team Honor is the Great Skate All Star Game and Ohio's goalie, Carl Weedman would take home the Valken Most Valuable Goalie award.
Junior Division
OH-JR-2009

Ohio would have three teams competing in the Junior division at State Wars V. In 2009 the Ohio AAA team finished round robin with a 1-2-1 record which gave them three points. Ohio was able to tie Louisiana in a 5-5 game and take a 6-5 win from Colorado. With only three points, Ohio would miss out on the playoffs and would not get a chance at revenge!

In the AA division Ohio had two teams representing their state. Ohio II would complete round robin with a 3-1 record and took out some strong teams from Illinois, Michigan, and their friends from the other Ohio squad. Ohio II would see Florida in the semi finals where they would lose in a 4-3 game. Florida would score two first period goals which really set Ohio II back a little. Dan Dukart would score two goals to tie the game up but Anthony Panariello would answer back to give Florida the lead. Ohio II would score again but Florida would come out on top to send Ohio II to the bronze medal game.

In the bronze medal game, PA would score quick but Ohio would answer right back from a goal by Chris Weiss. Dan Dukart would have the final say in this contest and and Ohio II would come out with the bronze medal.

The Ohio I AA team would finish round robin with a 1-3 record. Ohio's win would come against Michigan in an 8-3 victory. Ohio would face Pennsylvania in the quarter finals but it wouldn't go too well for them. Pennsylvania would take down Ohio I in a 2-0 game and move on to the next round.

Senior Division
OH-SR-2009

Ohio represented well competing with three teams in the very competitive Senior division. Ohio played in the Senior AAA and Ohio also had two teams playing in Senior AA division.

The Senior AAA team had a solid team that had a rough draw in round robin. Ohio went 0-4 during round robin and had six goals for and 31 goals against. Ohio had to play, Team NY, Manitoba, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Chris Weiss led the squad with two goals and an assist for three points. Peter Okada faced 81 shots during round robin and added a .630 save percentage. Unfortunately they weren't able to move on to the playoff rounds but they played some solid hockey.

Ohio I went 2-2 during the round robin play in the Senior AA. They were able to take down Connecticut and Virginia but ended up falling to Michigan and New Jersey. Anthony Winrod let Ohio I in scoring with four points in four games. Ohio I would face the #2 seed Pennsylvania in the quarter finals and lose by the score of 7-1. Christian Walter would score a late power play goal but that would be all for Ohio I.

Ohio II didn't have as much luck as Ohio I as they fell in all four games during round robin. Losses game from Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Florida which meant that they did not qualify for the playoffs. Kevin Tufts and Bob Davis ended up leading their team with two points each which included a goal and an assist. Net minder PJ Axelson finished round robin with 65 saves and 26 goals against for a .714 save percentage.
Women's AAA Division

OH-Womens-2009

Every year at State Wars, one of our most exciting and ever growing divisions is the Women's. Our staff takes a lot of pride in this division because we love giving these women a chance to compete at the highest level. Team Ohio played some great teams throughout the tournament but came up short.

The girls ended up going 0-4 but the scores didn't show exactly how good they played. Ohio ended up losing to New York, California, Colorado, and Michigan. Unfortunately Ohio wouldn't be able to "squeak" into the playoffs but the girls played a wonderful tournament. Look for Ohio to travel to Illinois this summer in what looks to be our largest Women's Divison ever!

Goalie, Kelly Metz would finish the tournament facing 90 shots and only letting in 26 goals.
Masters AAA/AA Division

OH-Masters-2009

In a competitive Masters division, Team Ohio ended their round robin with a 1-3 record. There two points came against Michigan III in a tight 2-1 battle. Bobby Ganger would tie the game up at 1-1 then it was Ohio's Don Bolton who sealed the deal for his team with a late second period goal. Ohio would fall short in qualifying for the playoffs but winning that last game definitely seemed to make their tournament.

This summer at SW6, the Masters Division will be split into separate AAA and AA divisions, look for Ohio to make a run at the AA title!
