Do You Have a Company of Story Tellers?

"When I was a child; my parents would send me to stay overnight at my Native American grandmother's place. She used to repeat the same stories about Native American Indians that she was told when she was a child. Even now I remember these stories by heart as though they were told to me just yesterday."

From American Indian Folklore by Wil Two Bears Guillory

StorySelling helps to retain customers and to attract new ones. Top sales and marketing people simplify matters by relating intriguing stories, metaphors and anecdotes that cause gut reactions by their audience.

On her Say It With a Story website, Lori Silverman, a Wisconsin based management consultant, offers a variety of "tried and true tales that inspire the workplace".

She has written a number of short articles about business story telling. Reply to this newsletter if you would like me to email any of the following to you.

  • "Winning Ways" by Lou Holtz
  • Here's a story that can be likened to the art of selecting and coaching the right sales and marketing people for your team.

According to Lou Holtz, most people want instant success or gratification. If they don't see results by the second day, they tend to get discouraged and are not willing to acquire similar good habits as those possessed by successful people.

The Chinese bamboo tree provides a good analogy. When the seed of the bamboo tree is planted, it is watered and fertilized regularly. During the first four years, there is no visible growth. However, during the fifth year when it finally emerges from the ground, it grows to a height of 90 feet in just six weeks. Experts say that during the first four years in the soil, the seed is building an elaborate root system that allows it to grow 90 feet in just six weeks.

Good habits are like the Chinese bamboo tree. You won't see results for a while, but eventually they will take hold and your life will blossom. When recruiting your sales and marketing team look for people who have good habits that you can build upon through sound coaching.
