Greetings!, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
DoCoMo chose today, Christmas eve, December 24, 2010, to start LTE mobile services under the brand name Xi. Data speeds will be built up to 100Mbps in 2014 - similar speeds as optical fiber to the home.
While DoCoMo started 3G services years before other countries introduced 3G services, and invested about YEN 1 Trillion (= US$ 10 Billion) in the first three years to build up 3G, this time DoCoMo is not first in the world introducing LTE, and invests only approx. YEN 300 Billion (=US$ 3 Billion) over the first three years 2010-2012.
The big challenge - and the big opportunity - is to overcome the "Galapagos effect", and for Japanese companies to build global business based on the advanced development of mobile communications in Japan, and to avoid that Japan's mobile phone handset industry follows the path of "Wapro's" (Wapro = word processors were pre-PC Japan-only closed word processing computers, an extinct species today).
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
