Topic : "Turn Japan's Galapagos Effect to your advantage when marketing foreign products".
Speaker: Dr. Gerhard Fasol, President, Eurotechnology Japan KK Japan has tremendous cultural impact on the world. However, even Japan's government officials now talk about the Galapagos effect: i-Mode, keitai, electronic money and Shinkansen are fantastic, but are largely confined to the islands of Japan and among major advanced countries, Japan's economy is the only economy that does not grow. Dr. Fasol will show in the presentation why our world is a better place with even more of Japan's creativity - not less, and why some aspects of the Galapagos effect are welcome and create good opportunities. Dr. Fasol's speech will include experience from working as the only non-Japanese on Japan's "post-Galapagos committee", and will show that for foreign companies working to enter and grow in Japan's markets, it is better to understand the Galapagos effect and live and work WITH it, rather than against it. Speaker: Dr. Gerhard Fasol is a globally leading expert on Japan's high-tech sector. He initially came to Japan in 1984 to help establish NTT's first international R&D cooperation, and has been working with Japan's high-tech sector ever since. He was manager of one of Hitachi's R&D labs, was faculty member of Tokyo University's Electrical Engineering Dept, leader of a Japanese Government "Sakigake" R&D project on spin-electronics. Since 1996, Fasol is Entrepreneur in Tokyo, founded Eurotechnology Japan KK and has worked with many corporations from US and EU on business development in Japan, M&A, and has worked with more than 100 investment fund managers about Japan's technology sector. Gerhard graduated with a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University and Trinity College, Cambridge.

International Computer Association (ICA), Tokyo Thursday June 17th, 2010 at 6:30pm
Topic : "Current Mobile Market Trends - Opportunities for Japan".
Speaker: Dr. Gerhard Fasol, President, Eurotechnology Japan KK
By most criteria, Japan has by the far the world's most advanced
mobile market. Our research shows that Japan currently has about 7 times
more mobile phone 3G base stations than the UK. By 2012, Japan will
have completely switched off all 2G mobile networks, and LTE will be on
the way to mainstream. The Japanese mobile-sector start-up SoftBank was built from scratch
by Masayoshi Son into one of the world's most successful mobile
operators and media groups (it now includes Yahoo Japan). Japanese
mobile operators are extremely profitable, allowing massive investments,
the level of which shocked even Vodafone and NOKIA into departure from
Japan. But Japanese mobile-sector companies have generally not managed to
build global businesses based on their local success. Some call this the
"Galapagos effect". Our speaker is the only non-Japanese on Japan's
"Post-Galapagos Committee" that has been working for the past year on
ideas to overcome this, and leverage Japan's local success into global
business. Speaker: Gerhard Fasol graduated with a PhD in
Physics from Cambridge University (Trinity College). He initially came
to Japan in 1984 to help establish NTT's first international R&D
cooperation, and has been working with Japan's high-tech sector ever
since. A leading European expert on Japan, entrepreneur, and founder of
Eurotechnology Japan KK, he has worked with more than 100 investment
fund managers and with many corporations on Japan business development
and acquisitions. .
