Opening and globalizing Japan (post-Galapagos?)  Jan. 12, 2010
Greetings!

"...we have entered a new age in which Japan needs to cooperate with other nations and regions for mutual growth, rather than compete with them" (Yorihiko Kojima, President of Mitsubishi Shouji, in Nikkei of January 2, 2010).

Japan used to be a closed country (the Japanese term is "sakkoku"), and "sakkoku" thinking is deeply ingrained in many (not all) Japanese people's thinking and actions. Actually, if you live longer in Japan, you will meet Japanese people at all levels who are working hard to overcome the "sakkoku" philosophy. Some of my own thoughts on the "sakkoku" issue are summarized in the presentation I gave some years ago at Stanford University (for the original Stanford Univ talk click here, for an updated version click here (pdf file)).

For someone like myself, who has worked about 25 years with Japan's technology sector, a call by the CEO of Japan's largest trading company for Japan to cooperate with other nations rather than compete is quite breath-taking innovation... and its an excellent indication for Japan to overcome the negative effects of "sakkoku", which have recently been much discussed up to Government level as the "Galapagos effect". Actually, I am the only non-Japanese working on the Government/Industry/Academia "Post-Galapagos committee" - working to overcome the "Galapagos effect".

"Sakkoku" and the "Galapagos effect" have positive aspects: some technologies have advanced far more and far earlier in Japan then in other countries. Among these areas areas are mobile internet, electronic money and mobile payments. The trick for Japan is not only to create highly advanced technologies such as these - but also to build corresponding global businesses. Maybe we will start to see more of these in 2010....
