Japan: e-cash is 2% of all coins and banknotes  Oct 16, 2009
Greetings!

e-Money in Japan amounts to about 2% of the value of coins and banknotes in circulation in Japan.... this was one of the key messages of the presentation by our CEO at a lunch meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) in Tokyo on October 7, 2009.
Many executives present expressed surprise how far developed e-cash and mobile payments are in Japan...

emoney Electronic money (e-cash) is rapidly growing in Japan.

There is about one e-cash card per Japanese citizen and the total amount of e-cash has reached 2% of the value of coins and banknotes.
Find more statistics in our Mobile payment, e-cash and keitai credit report, and many more details in our mobile payment collection of reports.

The figure above shows that Japan's transition from coins and paper money to electronic money and mobile-phone based money does not happen overnight, but is a slow and steady process stretching over several years.
