Remedy for Bee Stings
Remove stinger.  Pick plantain leaves from the yard.  Wash, and then chew or put the plantain leaves in the blender.  Apply it to the bite and attach with a band-aide or tape.  This will ease swelling and pain.

This picture shows plantain which you'll find all over the yard - it's a wonderful medicinal plant!

In Medicine, "The Study" is Everything
The other day a friend of mine said that there is little to no research on herbal products and since she believes in studies, she could not trust the food products I wanted to recommend to her.  I decided to write this article with the help of my fellow colleagues.

All treatments and protocols are based on medical studies.  All drug sales are based on studies. Even government health edicts are based on studies.  Unfortunately, most medical studies are wrong!

A famous article in The Atlantic clearly showed what happens when you take a look at proven "gold standard" medical study results and edicts and then review them five years later.

A Patient's Story

"Lainy Reicher has been treating me for about 4 months now and the most significant thing I have noticed is the hay fever I have had for the past 25 years. I used to suffer so much with itchy eyes, constant sinus congestion, itchy throat, etc. I was miserable for 6 weeks every spring. Sometimes it was so bad that I had to wear a thin cloth mask to breathe through at night when I went to sleep in addition to having an air purifier in my room. This Spring was the first year that I have not had any of my usual symptoms besides a little bit of stuffy nose. I would say it was about 95% better.

I have tried every kind of treatment for hay fever for the past 25 years (acupuncture, homeopathy, NAET, herbs, vitamins, etc.) trying to get relief, but the only thing that helped somewhat was Claritin. I am so happy to report that for the first time in 25 years, I had an uneventful Spring this year!

I also had a terrible time with insomnia since menopause. I went for months on and off, not able to sleep and had to resort to Lunesta which always made me feel groggy during the day and not feel rested even though I would get 7 - 8 hours of sleep. Now, I am able to sleep (without Lunesta) which is a huge necessity as I have a very busy life with many responsibilities. I have been able to get off of HRT (off of estrogen completely, and working on getting off of the progesterone next).

Overall, I am very grateful to Lainy for helping me overcome the terrible suffering with hay fever and hormonal imbalance. I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone who has similar conditions to work with Lainy and end the suffering without resorting to drugs which can give you more problems that when you started. Thank you!"

I hope you enjoyed this July e-newsletter.  If you're not feeling your best, it may be a good time to check in with me and correct any imbalances.  If you are feeling great because of our work together, I really appreciate referrals!

Thank you,
Lainy Reicher, ND, CDN, CN

In Medicine, "The Study" is Everything
The other day a friend of mine said that there is little to no research on herbal products and since she believes in studies, she could not trust the food products I wanted to recommend to her.  I decided to write this article with the help of my fellow colleagues.

All treatments and protocols are based on medical studies.  All drug sales are based on studies. Even government health edicts are based on studies.  Unfortunately, most medical studies are wrong!

A famous article in The Atlantic clearly showed what happens when you take a look at proven "gold standard" medical study results and edicts and then review them five years later.

The allure of biases brought about by special interests, money, fame, and power is enormous in the research world.  This brings about study results that are biased toward a specific finding, statistically skewed, falsely interpreted, or simply incorrect. These results are often proven wrong or reversed after further study.  And amazingly, even when proven wrong, many of the results continue to be the mainstay of medical care for years.

Surely the drug companies play a major role in erroneous medical studies.  But there are all kinds of other problems involved with medical studies, and they are not short of critics.  The critics have been pointing out, rightfully so, that:

  • The smaller the effect observed, like the relative benefit or risk versus the absolute benefit or risk, the more likely it is wrong.
  • The hotter the research subject, like "Medical estrogen therapy does not cause breast cancer", the more likely it is wrong.
  • The greater the financial interest in being right -- as in "Statin (cholesterol-lowering) drugs are beneficial in many ways besides lowering cholesterol numbers" -- the more likely it is wrong.
  • The more flexible the designs, definitions, and outcomes, the greater the chances the study is skewed to get the desired results, and the more likely it is wrong.
  • The more variables being tested in a study, the more likely it is wrong.

Most of this would have gone on unnoticed, but for the study-analysis headed by Dr. John Ioannidis featured in the article I referenced above.  He clearly showed that most medical studies are wrong.  He put it nicely by saying, "Science is a noble endeavor, but it's also a low-yield endeavor."  In the end, there is too much money, greed, power, fame, special interest, and notoriety to keep medical science honest.  And even Dr. Ioannidis might have slipped through the cracks but for the fact that he is the Division Chief of the Stanford Prevention Research Center.

In addition, the issue of study subjects is a Pandora's box.  These study subjects make up the crux of all studies and without them medical science would grind to a halt.  But did you know that many, if not most of them, are professional study subjects?  They often participate in more that one study at a time, taking drugs from one study that would interfere with the other, and vice versa.  They routinely cheat on the drugs and protocols they take for the studies.  And they routinely lie about their health, background, medical history, drug use, and more.

So the next time you are prescribed a new drug based on a new study, take heed.  It is probably  wrong.  Rather, try to find an alternative treatment.  Or at least use the medical Golden Rule: Do not take any new drug until it has been in use for at least seven years. And if you want to understand the world of drug companies, watch a movie called  The Constant Gardner.  This film shows what extreme measures drug companies will take to use people for their studies.

I want to thank Dr. Bruce West for his research into this matter.
