Gardening Tips

fabulous flower beds

1)  A properly designed irrigation system for your lawn and garden can help conserve the earth's water resources because the system, if properly designed, will only deliver water to select areas of your yard when required which means less wasted water.

2)  Rechargeable electric lawn mowers are becoming more popular these days but did you know that commercial grade rechargeable electric trimmers are also available? Converting to rechargeable electric lawn maintenance products will not only help to clean the air but they will help to reduce noise pollution in our neighbourhoods too.

White Rock Boulevards
boulevards

Dotted around the city, there is the potential for beautiful road-side plantings.

Little mini gardens that radiate the pride we White Rock residents have for our beautiful city by the sea!

Ooops! have you driven down Stayte Road lately?

I think the "gardens" there need a little help...

Ever since the city banned the use of weed killers, the dandelions are in heaven! That's a good thing, of course, and I mean banning weed killer poisons, but I think there are more beautiful plants than a bunny's favourite meal!

So if you've got a green thumb and an hour to spare, their boulevard "gardens" could sure use a little weeding.

Grab a trowel, a green waste bag and maybe a friend and have your very own garden party! Or take a look out front - does your little garden oasis need weeding?

PLANT A TREE - TIPS !!

One of the main reasons that newly planted trees die, is that they have been planted too deep. Do not plant them any deeper than the root collar flare. It should be visible. Be sure to tamp down the soil in the bottom of the hole, in case the tree sinks once the it is in place.
Also, when planting any plant, it should always be as high in the soil as it is in the pot. Do not pile on extra soil as it can be very damaging, if not fatal.
Remember this: 'Plant it high, it won't die. Plant it low, it won't grow!'

Earth Day -

The Yoga Connection

Yoga is about developing greater awareness of our inter-connectedness, or union with all that is around us. One of our most fundamental relationships is to the biosphere we call earth. As we become more thoughtful about our health and well-being, we see that it is intimately connected to the health and well-being of our water, soil, forests, fish, air, and all their related communities. Michael Stone in Yoga for a World out of Balance finds "Yoga is always a practice that takes place in the world, so it makes no sense to deny your activities in the world, because that is the fabric of the practice, the warp and the weave of your life." How can the fabric of your life inspire greater kindness and compassion? It may be using a little less water, shopping locally, or walking rather than driving once a week. We do not need to become judgmental, critical or embrace negativity to inspire change. Simple actions done with awareness and kindness illuminate our inter-connectedness, and create healthier communities for ourselves, and future generations. Yoga at its best!

Celebrating Earth Day is just one way we can acknowledge the hard work all of us have done over the years to spread the message of REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. Our efforts are making a huge difference in the world today. And that deserves a celebration. Look for one of our blue RECYCLE IT trucks parked in White Rock on Earth Day. If you stop by and book a job with us on Earth Day - or call one of our super friendly call center staffers - we will gladly donate all proceeds to an Earth Day Charity. Read Jason's Article about the progress we've made...

A recent study by Metro Vancouver found that 40% of residential waste in our garbage is food!

Food decomposing in a landfill hurts our environment. As it decomposes without access to oxygen, food releases methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas that is 20 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide!

Fortunately, we have the ability to compost food and yard trimming, saving our planet from the unnecessary creation of additional greenhouse gases.

By choosing to compost we are also creating a valuable resource, nutrient rich topsoil useful for landscaping, and growing food in gardens.

Through the new Green Can program, White Rock residents will make a positive difference for our environment, as we join several other Lower Mainland communities in composting our food and yard trimmings.
