Healthy HotSpot: H&M Grocery Corner Store Event

Thank You For Your Support With The
H&M Grocery Corner Store Event!

On November, 9th, the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) launched its Healthy HotSpot program in Harvey as part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative. The celebration was held at H&M Grocery  and highlighted the importance of healthy food access in local corner stores in communities where it is harder to reach full-service grocery stores. We were excited to see elected officials and residents of Harvey gathered at H&M Grocery to celebrate the changes being made.

H&M Grocery, located at 15308 Center Ave in Harvey, IL  has successfully designated "Healthy HotSpots" throughout the store. As part of the project, H&M Grocery owner Ayman Abuzir has added fresh produce, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and frozen vegetables to his store selection to make it easier for residents of Harvey to make healthy choices. To support these changes, H&M Grocery received new equipment and assistance with promotion from the Harvey Cultural Center.

Thank you to CCDPH, CPPW, Harvey Cultural Center, Porter Novelli, and Ayman Abuzir for making this event happen.

The Healthy HotSpot pilot program is working to improve food access by providing healthier food options in corner stores in eight communities to include foods with whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables, which can help reduce obesity rates and improve the overall health of residents. As part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative, more than 20 stores in suburban Cook County are participating in the program including stores in Blue Island, Calumet Park, Cicero, Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Harvey, Mount Prospect and Riverdale. The other Healthy HotSpot stores will unveil their healthier food options throughout November and December. For more information about the Healthy HotSpot program, visit: www.HealthyHotSpot.org.
