Calistoga Club News

On Friday April 27th the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga put out the welcome mat and invited parents, family, friends and the community to its' annual Open House.
Members and Staff had prepared for weeks prior to the event, designing and making displays to highlight the Club's various programs; Education and Career, Character and Leadership, Health and Life Skills, Sports and Fitness and the Arts. Visitors to the Club were pleased and amazed to see what Members have experienced and accomplished over the 2011 - 2012 school year. Most pleased were the Club Members themselves who reveled in the chance to show off their Club, their friends and all the terrific activities they enjoy taking part in.
Torch Club Members, a service group for Members ages 11 - 13 created, stocked and ran a snack bar for the Open House. Torch Club Members also assisted staff with the various booths and had the opportunity to talk about the Club's Programs with many of the guests.
In addition to all the great info about the Club there were fun activities to engage in. The giant jumpy house was jumping and the best event of the evening was when Members challenged their parents to a tug o' war on Calistoga Elementary School's Berry Field. Parents gave it the old heave ho but the Club Members were unstoppable.
Over 200 hundred people attended the open house. The Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga gets a hugh high five, the night was a great success
and a good time was had by one and all.

St. Helena Club News

The Torch Club, a small-group leadership and service club for boys and girls ages 11 to 13, is once again giving back to the community that gives so much to the Club.
St. Helena's Relay for Life, July 14th, 2012, will be the most recent recipient of the hard work and generous spirit of the Torch Club Members.
The Torch Club is involved in Relay in a number of ways. They are making beautiful paper bag luminaries for the after dark ceremony that honors those touched by cancer and remembers loved ones who lives were lost to this disease. Members will also visit the track at the St. Helena Primary School to cheer on Relay Team members. Most significantly Torch Club Members are actively fund raising with the goal of donating $300 to Relay for Life.
They are over a 1/3 of the way to reaching their goal and are very excited about the very good chance to not only reach but maybe even exceed their $300 goal. If you would like to help these dedicated Club Members meet and exceed their financial support to Relay for Life. Stop by the St. Helena Club, fish out that pocket change and fed the Relay for Life donation can on the reception desk counter.
All funds raised by the Club will remain local.

Teen Center News
The Calistoga Teen Center sends a SHOUT OUT and a big THANK YOU to the City of Calistoga's Recreation Service. They have generously provided the Teen Center with the use of two of the cities passenger vans. The use of the vans allows Teen Center Members and staff to take advantage of events and services that were formerly passed up because of distance. The Teen Center intends to take full advantage of this new boon. The use of the vans opens up the summer schedule to include many fun field trips and activities such as movies, ice skating, beach days, hiking and biking outside of Calistoga and many other ideas the staff and Members dream up. The two vans can transport a total of 16 Teens and enough gear to guarantee a summer of adventure. |

One of the many benefits I enjoy being the Executive Director of a wonderful organization such as the Boys & Girls Club is that I can get away with doing things that other staff can't. Case in point, I recently offered that if ANY Member could make a basket from outside the 3 point line there would be ice cream for EVERYONE. Well, a Club Member took me up on my challenge and scored. I made good on my offer. That particular Club Member and I were very popular that day.
Another privilege I enjoy, though not exclusively, is to be around so many exceptional young people. Lively, curious, enthusiastic, determined, talented, kind and often compassionate, our Club Members in St. Helena and Calistoga demonstrate daily the gifts they have to offer.
To celebrate our Clubs and Members the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga are getting ready for the Second Annual Youth of the Year Awards Breakfast. The focus is to select one Member who will be named the Clubs' 2012 Youth of the Year. This is also a time to honor each and every child who walks through our doors. (See top left story.)
Throughout the year both the St. Helena Club and the Calistoga Boys & Girls Club acknowledges many of its' Members for outstanding ability, effort, and quality of character. A Member of the month is awarded in each of our 5 Core Program areas; Character and Leadership, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts and Recreation and Fitness. Each Club selects one boy and one girl as Member of the Month. Each year a Boy and Girl of the Year are chosen for the St. Helena Club and the Calistoga Club. From these four the Youth of the Year is selected.
Although only one Member can be Youth of the Year there are so many fine young people that could stand in the same place. We offer a big THANK YOU to all the bright lights who are the Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga. It is a pleasure and privilege to be here for you.
