Winner

Congratulations Avery! St. Helena Elementary School 4th Grader, Avery Thompson was selected as a winner in the Boys & Girls Club of America's 2012 Regional Fine Arts Exhibit. Her sculpture, The Crazy Boat won it's category among participants of a similar age.

Avery's Crazy Boat still has another journey to take. Her sculpture was submitted to Boys & Girls Club of America to compete in the National Fine Arts Exhibit. Winners will be displayed at the National Conference in early May.  Best of luck to Avery and The Crazy Boat.

The Boys & Girls Club National Fine Arts Program is a year round program that encourages artistic expression among Club members age 6-18 through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media and sculpture. Youth who participate in this program explore and develop their creativity and expand their cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of fine arts. The works produced in this program are displayed at local and regional exhibits.

We often hear of program cuts to the arts in our schools so it's reassuring to know that the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga are committed to protecting and advancing the fine arts so young artists such as Avery can nurture and expand their creativity.

Reading Rocks

Reading Rocks Power Hour... Walk into the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga's Power Hour any weekday after 3PM and you will see something remarkable, Club Members gathering to read. They read in small groups. They read alone. They read with the assistance of wonderful volunteers and mentors. They read out loud to one another. They read silently, some moving their lips with the effort of a focused task. Ask any of these Members what they will be doing tomorrow at the same time and they will most likely answer "reading".

A current federal study indicates that 1 in 7 adults in the US have such low literacy skills they find it difficult to read a children's picture book. It's a very good thing indeed that Club Members are eager to be part of a movement to read. It might even be considered a rampage to read.

Power Hour, the afterschool homework help program, is lending its' support for Calistoga Elementary School goal of reading proficiency at all grade levels. First and second grade Club Members are receiving one-on-one reading session with a volunteer or an older student peer mentor. Third thru sixth grade Members have been enrolled by the Club in the Scholastic Reading Counts Program. Incentives motivate Members to participate in the weekly comprehension quizzes.

How many books can a Club Member read? Once the first book is finished it's time to move onto the next of the 55,000 books available to them in the school library.

Is it summer yet?

Two more months and the Academic year 2011-12 will be just a memory.  It's during this time of year when the staff have to be thinking about both  the present and the future.  Not only are they organizing for "today's" activities, but also planning for the wonderful offerings, special activities, and field trips for the upcoming summer program.

Field Trips in the planning stages, for both Clubs, include the perennial favorites; a day with the Oakland A's, a trip to Water World (what a great way to beat the heat and the ultimate summer thrill), and a day at Six Flags.

The St. Helena Club has several special movie screenings lined up at the Cameo Cinema on Main Street, and Pool Play Fridays (the kind where you get wet not the kind with pool cues and balls) for Members who are competent swimmers.

The Calistoga Club  will have Pool Play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for Club Swimmers and "Theme Weeks"

each week of the summer program. I can hardly wait for Pirates, Buccaneers and Black Waters Week!

As always the Club provides all young people a safe, positive and unique place to develop their natural talents and to inspire them to achieve their full potential. And to have the most fun possible doing it!
