Calistoga Club News

Cycles of Change, Bicycles of Challenge...Power Hour, the Boys & Girls Club program that gives hands on homework help to its' Members, has always been a well attended and very popular program within the Club. However when the Calistoga staff began to notice that many of its' Members were picked up by parents or care takers at the end of Power Hour and missing the wonderful enrichment programs such as health, nutrition and cooking classes, art classes, games and recreation, computer lab, and gardening they decided to offer Members a challenge to stay and enjoy some of the best the Club has to offer.
Quick thinking staff came up with The Bicycle Challenge. Bikes for Tots donated five bicycles with helmets to the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga over the Christmas Holiday break. Using the bicycles as prizes, Club Members were issued a challenge. The five Members who tallied the most hours spent at the Club in the month of January were given a bike and a helmet to take home.
The competition was tough with all Members wanting a chance to take home a new bicycle. Club attendance jumped dramatically for the post Power Hour programs. Who would be the first to arrive and the last to leave? The five Members to receive bicycles and helmets are: Celedonio Caldera 80 hours and 41 minutes, Nathan Link 72 hours and 44 minutes, Isabelle Link 72 hours and 3 minutes, Alexander Caldera 69 hours and 39 minutes and Gabriela Caldera Castaneda 67 hours and 10 minutes.
Even though the Bicycle Challenge is officially over the late afternoon attendance has held steady. Club Members having discovered the pleasure of the many exciting enrichment programs offered now stick around well past Power Hour. With so many cool and fun to do, why would you want to leave?

St. Helena Club News
Calling all Luke Skywalkers of Napa Valley, It's Cork Wars... It was another only in Napa Valley moment at the Boys & Girls Club of St. Helena a few weeks back.
Several, rather large, boxes of unused wine bottle corks had been donated to
the Club. Plans for the donated corks included several Art Room projects including but not limited to cork sculpture, cork stamps and cork architecture. But before anyone could lay claim on the corks for any personal project, a group of wily Members and their inspired Club Staff cleared the Art Room of chairs, flipped tables on their sides for barricades, and loaded each barricade with a box full of corks and a team of Club Members.
On the count of three, the chant Cork Wars...Cork Wars...Cork Wars filled the air as well as hundreds of corks. What wonderful mayhem, hands full of corks going anywhere and everywhere. Members, staff and the occasional parent, no one was spared from involvement in the giddy chaos. The number of corks in boxes diminished until the last cork had been tossed. Panting, laughing and rolling among the corks covering the floor Members engaged in a new challenge. What challenge? Why getting the corks back into the boxes in the fastest amount of time, of course.
Corks back in boxes, tables upright and chairs at the ready no one would suspect a simple cork of helping a Club Member let off steam at the end of a school day, fostering team play and a sense of camaraderie and creating a zany and unique Napa Valley experience.
WHAT WILL WE DO IF SCREW TOPS RULE THE WORLD???

WE'RE GREAT...AND WE CAN PROVE IT!!!
Ranked in the top 20 percent of all Boys & Girls Clubs in the 9 state BGCA Pacific Region.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of
St. Helena and Calistoga recently received the above results from Boys & Girls Club of America's, after its first annual Key Performance Indicator (KPI) evaluation.
This calls for a shout out to our incredibly hard working Board of Directors and Staff. But before I go on to happily toot our own horn let me back up and tell you the KPI matters.
Key Performance Indicators, a self-assessment that is part of our Annual Report to BGCA, provide an accurate, high-level, quantifiable picture of how well an organization functions, its' current capacities and addresses long term considerations and goals. The outcome of using KPI is to help increase organizational capability and provide a framework for development to ensure a strong and vibrant Club. While we are not yet perfect (only one Club in the Pacific Region was) we can give ourselves a hearty pat on the back.
Six critical areas of organizational capacity are reviewed in the KPI assessment: Aspirations, Strategic Growth, Impact, Finance, Resource Development and Boards. BGCSHC scored well in all. To do that it takes many people with a sense or purpose, a unified vision and a commitment to action.
Thank you to our hardworking, motivated and talented Board of Directors, leaders in our communities as well as in our Clubs. Your clearly defined mission, vision, goals, resource development and commitment to sustaining a strong and active Board keep us striving to be the best possible organization we can be.
Thank you to our absolutely incredible, dedicated, creative and rock solid Club Staff. Because of you we continue to not only serve more young people each and every year, we have also increased our average daily attendance and frequency of attendance. We know from research that to have a greater impact on a child's life, increased participation in Club activities is a key factor.
Thank you to our wonderful community and our generous supporters: Napa County Office of Education, Napa Valley Vintners Association, Napa Valley Community Foundation. SH Rotary, and all of the businesses and individuals who have contributed to the financial stability of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga over the years.
Because of You The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga is a strong and vital organization. Because of you we are able to have a deep impact on our youth in academics, good character and citizenship and healthy lifestyles.
