St. Helena Club News
Kinder TugCollectively we have now come to that part of 2012 where most of our new year's resolutions regarding health and well being live only in our past. However healthy resolutions are very much alive and well for Members of the Boys & Girls Club of St. Helena. Stop on by the Club any Monday thru Friday between 2 and 4 in the afternoon and you can witness our Members engaging in Triple Play, a series of focused activities geared to developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Triple Play usually starts with a daily challenge, a non-competitive, fun, physical activity that gets Club Members moving, grooving, laughing and increasing general fitness. Unit Director, Adrian Lopez, makes the daily challenge so entertaining, such as taking on the entire unit of kindergartners in a tug of war, no one wants to be left out in this wonderful opportunity for physical play.

Triple Play cooking classes involve Members in making smart food choices, understanding portion size, and creating fun and healthy meals.

Triple Play also helps to strengthen character and reinforce positive behavior with social recreational activities such as games and interactive projects.

Eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships all add up to a healthy lifestyle for Club Members. But don't take our word for it, listen to what our Club Members have to say about Triple Play, "it's three times more fun than anything!"

Calistoga Club News
Tween CenterWelcome to the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga new Tween Center. A ceremonial ribbon cutting and festive grand opening welcomed the Tween Center members on Tuesday, February 14th 2012. Those in 5th & 6th grade now have a stand alone program at the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga to call their own. Tween Center Members have a separate sign in to the Club, a dedicated classroom for tweens only, and activities and games that reflect and respect the different stage of development and needs that this age group has.

The most remarkable part of the new Tween Center is that the idea for the center and its' development came from the 11 to 13 year old Club Members themselves.

Observation on the part of staff and tweenage Club Members revealed 5th and 6th grade students of Calistoga Elementary School were attending the Club with less frequency than students in lower grades. Greg Boulliarce, Director the Calistoga Club posed the challenge of increasing the daily attendance of this age group to Members of the 2012 Torch Club. (The Torch Club is a chartered, small-group leadership and service club for boys and girls ages 11 to 13.) Torch Club Members picked up the challenge by immediately drafting an initiative that would create more room, separate activities and different opportunities for 5th and 6th graders.

Torch Club Members felt the biggest component to increasing attendance in this age group was to create a space that appeals to the needs and tastes of this age group. With that mandate front and center, the new Tween Center has been created by tweens for the enjoyment of tweens. Congratulations on a job well done!

Calistoga Teen Center News
HikeNine intrepid Calistoga Teen Center Members and two staff recently made a days outing of hiking up St. Helena Mountain. For those readers who have made the trek from the valley floor you know that this is not the proverbial walk in the park. While the hike is a feast for the eyes: calf muscles, heart rate and respiration are unsparingly challenged all the way to the top.

The Teens began their adventure early in the day meeting at the Center to make their alfresco lunch. Once packed up with gear, food and plenty of water the Teens and staff headed out from the Center to the trailhead and began the 2,000 foot assent to some of the most remarkable views in the Bay Area. Four hours of strenuous hiking later all nine Teen Center Members and staff made it up the mountain top where they enjoy the splendid panorama and a well deserved lunch.

New Fax Number for the Club!

Phew...I recently  completed the Year End Report for Boys & Girls Club of America and viewing the numbers confirms that our Clubs in St. Helena and Calistoga are growing rapidly in the number of youth served.

2011 shows 1,862 youth participating in either the St. Helena,  or the Calistoga Programs, a growth of 136 additional youth served over 2010. The year that our new St. Helena Club facility opened in 2008 enrollment was 1,262. Looking at the difference from 2008 to 2011 we have increased by 600 the number of youth served, an astounding 47%!

A high percentage of students attending local schools attend the Boys & Girls Clubs, 67% from St. Helena Primary, 96% (WOW) from St. Helena Elementary, 80% from Calistoga Elementary and 79% from Calistoga Junior/Senior High. Even though these are  strong numbers there remain students un-served by the Club.

O.K. so the Clubs serve a lot of kids, but what type of impact does the Club have on them? One measure of success is their academic achievement. NCOE's evaluation of the Club's After School Program show Club Members out perform students who do not attend the Club in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics.

The Club is proud of our school district partnerships and the work done by our tutoring and Club staff. To see NCOE's Report of the Star Test results over the past two years visit the Club's Website at www.bgcshc.org.

The increase in Club Membership and the improved test score of Members are an indication of the important and necessary work the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga are doing.  We count on you for support so we can continue to help those who most need us. Great Futures Start Here, they truly do.
