Calling all Pumpkins...It was a haunting sight when over 100 pint sized pumpkins donated by CalMart were delivered to the Calistoga Club at the beginning of October.

On first arrival the pumpkins appeared more like one another than not, but under the guidance of Art Room Director Sharolyn Townsend pumpkin personalities soon emerged from the orange globes. Club Members, eager to help the Great Pumpkin prepare for the Ghoul Time Festivities, picked a pumpkin and began to paint. Some were scary, some were sweet and some were downright silly, while others were abstract compositions inclined to various interpretations. All were as unique as the Club Member that painted it.

Once the Pumpkin Painting was complete all 100 were taken to the library for a brief display. Awards were given to 5 Members for having the best decorated pumpkins based on character, creativity and skill. Each of the five Club Members was awarded "Checkbook Points" to spend at the Tuesday/Thursday Club Store.

The pumpkins journey does not end there however. The Painted Pumpkins were on their way to their premier event, The Calistoga Haunted House. These fiendish, funny and fabulous fruits were viewed and appreciated by many Halloween Revelers.

The Youth of the Boys & Girls Club of Calistoga were pleased and proud to see their contributions bring smiles and enjoyment to their family, friends and community.

St. Helena Club News
Pony Ride
Time to Pony Up... Recent Parent/Teacher Conferences had the Club rockin' and rollin' with activity. Due to the short school days Club Members arrived at 12:30 PM with many staying until the 6 PM Club closing time. On Tuesday, November 1st, the Club set a record high for attendance, 265 Members came through the doors. PHEW!

You can imagine how very BUSY the Staff was  keeping Members well occupied, engaged and satisfied. There are always numerous activities, games and projects to engage in. Conference week however, called for some extra creativity on the part of Staff due to the high number of   participants and high energy levels (Halloween candy anyone).

That's where Old Paint came in. The super sized, stuffed pony was a gift from Wells Fargo Bank a few years back. Until recently he was content to sit on top of the games cabinet surveying the goings on below him.

The increase in attendance coupled with long lines for activities and a need to keep the troops rallied had Adrian, St. Helena Unit Director extraordinaire; pull Old Paint off the bench and into the action. What happened next was not your typical pony ride. Club Members lined up eager for a pony ride and then it was off to the races as each Member waited their turn, patiently, to GIVE the pony a ride! There was laughter, cheering and happy mayhem all around as the pony was piggy backed around the games room over and over until everyone who wanted a pony ride had a pony ride.

As for Old Paint he's back up on the games cabinet having thoroughly enjoyed his moment in the spotlight and looking forward to the next pony ride.

Calistoga Teen Center News
TC Work Bench
Wood, you donate... The Calistoga Teen Center is doing some fall house keeping of its' garden and potting shed. The staff and Members of the Club began the post growing season clean up and discovered the shed work bench is in a severe state of decay and unlikely to make it through another winter.

The Center is in need of wood to rebuild the bench. The wood sizes needed are 2" x 4", 4" x 6", and 1" x 1/2". Club Members and Clint Ferrier, Teen Center Director will supply the labor needed to rebuild the work bench.

The Teen Center grows tomatoes, onions, and carrots used in the Center's Cooking Class. Members would like to expand to growing a wider variety of vegetables as well as adding flowers into the cultivation plan for Spring 2012. To do this the Center needs  ½ wine barrel donations in addition to the request for lumber.

If you can donate please call Clint at (707) 942-2762
