Members on Earth Day

It's Fun to Be Green...

Earth Day this year found a dozen Calistoga Torch Club members and their families digging holes and setting bird houses in the Club's natural garden on the Calistoga Elementary School campus. The kids and staff began making the bird houses weeks prior to the Saturday, April 23rd event. The bird houses are installed in the Club's natural garden to demonstrate an environmentally safe way to control insects. Who are the lucky residents of the new housing units designed and built with them in mind? Why our beautiful California Bluebird. Here's a big THANK YOU to all the Club Members, staff and families that helped with this special earth day project.

Guitar ClassThree Cords and a Song

The BGCSHC was able to purchase twelve guitars, thanks to the City of Calistoga's Enrichment Grant Program. Twelve eager members have signed up to take this class. The awesome reward for those who attend 14 sessions, they'll be taking their guitar home to keep.

Dance Fever Srtikes Club Members...

Spring truly arrived with the Club's first ever Spring Break Dance. The Club kids deserve much kudos on taking the dance from idea to execution. Everyone participated in this after school event. Many brought their music to share; other brought fancy clothes to change into. A terrific sound system, Disco Ball and colorful lights, courtesy of the staff, added to the festivities. The gym was literally hoping with good sounds and happy feet. Some Club Members even did their own version of a spring break, break dance. When it was time to go, a chorus of "let's do it again" could be heard throughout the building. Ummm, same time next year?

Contain Yourself!!!

The newly planted container gardens at the Teen Center are full of possibilities both beautiful and edible.  The flowers add to the patio's café ambiance outside the Center and the veggie boxes will eventually provide the freshest of ingredients for the Thursday cooking classes. A patio juice bar is in the planning stages. Thanks to those working on their Community Service Hours, the Center will be reaping the rewards for weeks to come.

Best day ever.... William, a timid boy, encouraged to come over to me by Adrian our St. Helena Unit Director, stood inches away from me. I was furiously grabbing reports out of the copy machine. When a small voice said  "Hi". I playfully growled back

"Hi, ugh, I'm having a real terrible day",

The small form standing near me became as motionless as a statue.  I realized to my dismay that I scared him with my response to his courageous act of introduction. William turned, looked at Adrian and I hung my head. Adrian called the young boy back, crouched down and whispered to him. Once again William crossed the distance from Adrian back to me. "Hi", William was more cautious this time. "Hi, my name is Frankie, what's yours?"

Anxious to deliver his message, William blurted out with confidence "I did well in school today".  I dropped down to his level, face to face "You just turned my day into a perfect day" I told him. I felt my mood lift as he spontaneously and generously gave me an enormous hug, a hug worth writing about.  I looked at William and told him, "you made this the best day ever."
