Kirkwood High School teacher Mitch Eden was chosen by The Society of Professional Journalists as the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award. This award, made annually, honors a journalism educator and recognizes outstanding teaching ability, contributions to journalism, journalism education and contributions toward maintaining the highest standards of the profession. Eden advises the school's Pioneer yearbook and The Call newspaper, which have earned several awards during his tenure.
St. Anthony's Medical Center is offering flu shots to the community this year at all four of its urgent care centers. The cost is $25 for the traditional shot, or $30 for the new intradermal injection that uses a smaller needle injected into the skin instead of the muscle. This year's flu shot offers protection against H1N1 and the seasonal flu virus. Flu shots are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at all four of St. Anthony's Urgent Care centers: Arnold Urgent Care, 3619 Richardson Square Drive in Arnold; Big Bend Urgent Care, 10296 Big Bend Blvd., at Hwy. 44 and Big Bend; Fenton Urgent Care, 714 Gravois Road in Fenton;Lemay Urgent Care, 2900 Lemay Ferry Road in south county.
The Kirkwood Police Department is once again offering you the opportunity to properly dispose those old prescription medications. We will take everything except any type of sharpies (i.e. needles). 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 29th. All you have to do is drive onto the parking lot of Kirkwood City Hall and our Police Explorers and CERT volunteers will take your items placing them into boxes which will be sealed and destroyed. You don't even have to get out of your vehicle.

The Kirkwood Human Rights Commission will host a Symposium on Bullying on Saturday, October 13, 2012, from 1:00 p.m., to 4:00 p.m. The Symposium will be held at Kirkwood High School, 801 W. Essex. Registration begins at 1:00 p.m. The program will start at 1:45 p.m.
West Community Credit Union is sponsoring three, free educational seminars in October. "What Parents Need to Know about Funding a Child's Higher Education"will take place on Tuesday, October 16. "Enhancing Your Credit Score"will take place on Thursday, October 18. "Preparing for Retirement: Are You Ready?"will take place on Tuesday, October 23. All seminars will take place at West Community's Brentwood branch, 2345 South Brentwood.
