HBD Builds One-of-a-Kind Grocery Store
in Des Peres
Des Peres Dierbergs Location First In St. Louis Metro Area with Underground Parking Garage
HBD Construction is putting the super in supermarket as they build the first area grocery store with an underground parking garage. HBD and innovative grocery giant, Dierbergs have teamed up to build a free-standing 80,000 square-foot store on approximately 6.5 acres. The new store, located in Des Peres off Manchester Road, will have the distinction of being the first St. Louis area supermarket to offer covered parking, with 42% of its parking spaces planned for a brightly-lit lower level garage. The construction completion date is estimated to be July 31, 2012.

"This Des Peres location is going to be the finest, most revolutionary store among their 24 locations." HBD President, Mike Perry, stated, "To call it their flagship is probably an understatement. We couldn't be happier to be building our eighth store for the Dierbergs team."

Bordered to the north by Manchester Road, Lindeman Road on the west, Tallie Drive on the east and Manhattan Avenue on the south, the site plan provides customer and cart escalators and elevators leading directly into the supermarket. HBD Project Manager, Gerry Hill said, "This location will offer a smooth and dry one-of-a-kind shopping experience in inclement weather." Recent averages show precipitation in St. Louis on 111 days out of 365.

January Ambassador Article

Why Do I Belong?

By Rick Miller, Write for You Life Stories

Wouldn't you know it, at my very first meeting as an Ambassador for the Kirkwood-Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce, I somehow agreed to write an article for this month's Chamber Newsletter. At the time, it seemed like a doable task even though I only had twelve days before the article was due. So, as I began to think of what I might say, my genealogical genes began to make themselves known. [I have an abundance of such genes since I have been a genealogist for 27 years, have written two books, and now research and publish ancestral histories for individuals.] So it was no surprise when I asked myself, "I wonder when the first Chamber of Commerce was formed?"

A little sleuthing revealed that the first Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France. And that the first chamber of commerce in America was formed April 5, 1768 in New York City when twenty merchants met at Bolton and Sigel's Tavern. Present were such men as John Jacob Astor and J. Pierpont Morgan. Organized under the name The New York Chamber of Commerce, the society was designed to protect and promote the business interests of merchants in New York City. John Cruger (1710-1791), Mayor of New York City, was the first president.
