Holiday Gifts? They're All Right Here!
By Jim Wright
You know how e-mails are? We are constantly bombarded with jokes, cute pictures, pass a long's and occasionally something truly important. The other day I received this picture with the caption, "Men who lack supervision". Some men (people in general) have too much time on their hands or try to save time and money. One example is the time people try to save during the Holiday season shopping online in hopes of finding a great price on common Items. I see no real problem trying to find the best price on items, but when things are found from some supplier outside the Chamber service area, I do find the practice somewhat problematic for several reasons. First, the Chamber is all about buying locally to support neighborhood business persons, retaining jobs in the community, and increasing tax revenues for municipalities. An online purchase from sources outside the vicinity supports none of these objectives. Our communities are only as strong as its local government, its schools, its businesses and its citizens working together. |

Kirkwood Will Host A Recycling Light Depository
| The City of Kirkwood will host a drop-off container for unwanted holiday lights at the Francis Scheidegger Recycling Depository, 350 S. Taylor Avenue. The collection container will be available from November 15 to January 31. The City will partner with St. Louis Green and Operation Food Search to collect and recycle the lights. In 2010, 32,000 pounds of unwanted holiday lights were recycled. There is no fee to drop off lights, and 100% of the holiday lights collected will be recycled. The lights are broken down into their component parts, and both the glass and the plastic get sent to the appropriate recyclers. The recycled copper will be sold, with the proceeds benefiting St. Louis Green and Operation Food Search. "Everything is recycled," said Cindy Breth with St. Louis Green. "Nothing goes to the landfill." Volunteers are needed on an ongoing basis to help with the sorting process. Volunteers are also needed on Saturday, December 10 to help distribute flyers at area malls. Interested volunteers should contact Cindy Breth at 314-795-9520 or by email: cindy@stlouigreen.com. |
Best Western Kirkwood Inn Helping Toys For Tots!
| A small, local hotel is looking to make a big difference in the lives of some area children for Christmas. The Best Western Kirkwood Inn is teaming up with the USMC Reserves Toys for Tots campaign with "Casual for Christmas" to raise money for a toy shopping spree. So far, Best Western Kirkwood Inn has raised around $193 for Toys for Tots, by allowing employees to contribute money and "buy" a casual day which allows them to dress out of uniform. They fully expect to exceed their initial $500 goal by the time the campaign is over. "The interest everyone has for this special project is overwhelming", shares Cindy Brasseur, General Manager, "there's a big cheer when we post the contribution totals each Monday".
The community can help by bringing new, unwrapped packaged toys to the Best Western Kirkwood Inn, located at 1200 S Kirkwood Road, right off I-44. For questions about Best Western Kirkwood Inn or Toys for Tots, contact Cynthia Brasseur at (314) 821-3950. |
