Kirkwood School District Excellence In Education Since 1865
"I believe there is a direct correlation between strong schools and successful businesses and this results in a vibrant community," says Kirkwood School District Superintendent Tom Williams. This belief has led him to become an active member of the Kirkwood-Des Peres Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
"Historically, the school district has been involved with the Chamber and I'm pleased to continue the tradition. I am serving on the board of directors because I see the Chamber, and each of its members, as true partners in the important job of educating our children.
"We compliment each other because we are both working toward the goal of maintaining the current strength of our schools and businesses while planning for anticipated growth and demands. We expect this will be needed in order to serve an increasingly vibrant community in the future."
The Superintendent recently began his third year at Kirkwood. He and his wife, Chris, have four children. Nate is a senior at KHS, Kaylee is an 8th grader at North Kirkwood Middle School; McKinsie lives and works in West Des Moines, Nick, a member of the Iowa National Guard, recently returned from a year-long term of duty on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border and is a senior at the U of Iowa.
"The communities surrounding the Kirkwood School District share a sense of pride and commitment to providing a community where everyone wants to go to school, shop, work, play and live," he reports.

Creating Connections - October
| |
By Barb Byerly, BJB Creative Services
When Jon Kuhlmann was a teenager, he became a "picky" person in a very good way. While attending KHS, he and several school friends formed a musical group. Picking a name was one of their first challenges. "We ended up calling ourselves The Triceratops - dinosaurs were very popular back then," he says. And not only were dinosaurs popular, so was the group as they became a favorite to play at dances and other functions, with Jon as guitarist, using his "pick" to pluck his way through each piece of the latest music. Fast forward to 2011, and Jon is playing his guitar again, this time as part of the jubilee musical group at Kirkwood United Methodist Church. Plus, in his professional life, his many customers rely on him to be "picky" when it comes to choosing just the right flowers to create Kirkwood Florist's beautiful arrangements - in fact, it might be one of the top reasons he never seems to disappoint.
