School Is Back In Session
By Jim Wright

Jim FunnyQ. What do you do if a teacher rolls her eyes at you?
A. Pick them up and roll them back to her!

School is back in session. Remember the feeling you had when school started up again after a "too short" summer vacation? Some kids loved it, but not me. I was made for vacation...not for learning. My parents, on the other hand thought back to school was great - no more Jimmy around the house all day long.

One of the reasons I disliked school was the number of rules each teacher had for his or her class. There were rules about everything-no talking, no gum chewing, no laughing, no cheating (darn). Our hair had to be two fingers above our eyebrows, girls dresses had to reach the floor when they knelt down on their knees, blue jeans could have no holes in them and on and on and on! In one elementary school, in case of fire you would have to line up quietly in single file from the smallest to the tallest. What is the logic? Do tall people burn slower?

AT&T has announced recent network upgrades in Kirkwood and Webster Groves to bring residential and business customers faster speeds, increased reliability and best-in-class wireless service in 2011. AT&T has added capacity to cell sites, which is expected to improve service. It's like adding more lanes on a freeway so that voice and data traffic flows faster and more efficiently. In addition, AT&T continues to upgrade cell sites with fiber optic and Ethernet connections back to the central switching facilities, enabling faster 4G (HSPA+) speeds throughout Kirkwood and Webster Groves.

"We're investing in our Kirkwood and Webster Groves network because we're committed to providing the best wireless voice and data service to our customers," said John Sondag, president of AT&T of Missouri.

AT&T has invested $1.7 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in recent years, and we will continue to make improvements to critical communities like those in Kirkwood and Webster Groves. AT&T's advanced mobile broadband network provides several important advantages for customers, including the ability to talk and surf at the same time. For instance, you can look up directions to an event while still talking on the phone, or browse your favorite social media sites while chatting with a friend. AT&T also provides access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries.

The historic Brownhurst mansion, currently situated on the grounds of Vianney High School, will be demolished in fewer than 60 days unless a buyer can be found.  Brownhurst's owners, the Society of Mary or "Marianists," will sell the building for $1 to any serious buyer with proven financing and a conceptual plan to move the building away from the campus before October 9.  Additionally, the Marianists will donate $30,000 toward the cost of moving the structure. The buyer must make an offer prior to September 9. The building is currently being documented via Historic American Buildings Survey specifications.  For any additional information, history, or photographs please contact Matt Bivens, Kirkwood Landmarks Commission, at 314-333-7008 or by email at matt@rhcda.com
