Welcome to Fall
By Vivien Bergl, LCSW, CEAP, Solutions Program Coordinator

What about you?

We always think of the fall as going back to school. As adults, we also need to contemplate new beginnings for us, too. Is there something you have been wanting to try or change?

It could be something relatively simple like getting into better physical shape. Now is the time to do it. Set a goal.  Make your goals concrete and specific. For example, I will exercise 1 day a week for 30 minutes is a goal or I will make an appointment with a personal trainer on Tuesday or for a massage or at a spa. You get the point, now go for it!

Maybe you have been considering a job/career change or going for a promotion. What is stopping you? Fear? Not having enough information? Whatever it is, again set a goal!  It could be setting up an appointment with a career counselor, enquiring about a training program or a college program or asking a friend about openings where she works. What do you have to lose? Read about Pat Dube in Working Women magazine (September 2004). She made the transition from electrical engineer at Raytheon to high school physics and math teacher. Here's what she says about that job change, "One of the greatest things in life is waking up and going to a job you love. I have that job."

Perhaps your quest is for more meaning in life. It's not as concrete as improving your physical well being or making a job/career change, but equally as important. Studies have shown that people who feel their lives have meaning buffer themselves against the negative health effects of stress. What's meaningful to you may not be to others so you need to find your own way. Sounds daunting?! Start by:

  1. Outlining your priorities and values
  2. Make changes, act on them, i.e. if it's giving more to the community, volunteer!
  3. Slow down; reconnect, make a list of things you really cherish

Call Solutions EAP at 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all of life's challenges. It's free, confidential and open to your family members.
